That video, and all of the talk about passing the physical with the Falcons, makes me think the Rams organization knew Todd might have suffered a career-ending injury during the 2018 super bowl season. Some posters believe it was the eagles game... I thought it was the very first game of the season, against the Raiders. But the Rams had just guaranteed 50 million to Todd, and he hadn't even finished his first contract yet!

Maybe the rams only hope was to try and get a year or two more out of him, and hope he didn't break down along the way. So McVay barely used him, and that was obviously the plan all along. Heck, they even took away his captain's title at the BEGINNING of the season. Todd, being a competitor, wanted to try and keep playing. The Rams, trying to protect their investment and prolong his career, limited him physically (and emotionally). It kind of all makes sense now. And if Gurley has arthritis in that knee, and flunks the falcons physical, the Rams will owe him another 10 million in injury guarantees. Wow!

In my opinion, this was just bad luck for all involved. Gurley was the best back in football, and a class act... a great Ram! It was a dumb business decision to give him that second contract so early, but it was also the worst luck possible.

I really don't mind that Gurley can retire at 26 with 50 million dollars in the bank (plus his first contract at 14 mil). I think he earned it, from this fan's perspective. And what if the opposite happened... if Gurley had injured his knee, and the rams had not yet negotiated a second contract. I guess the Rams would be the lucky ones? Sometimes shit happens.

Best of luck to Todd Gurley! We'll miss ya! Thanks for the memories!

I felt more emotional about SJAX leaving the Rams, because the guy gave his heart and soul to the team. After last year, I can't say that about Gurley. If he was a cancer, then I'm glad he's gone. I know this is supposed to be a touchy-feely thread for Todd, but right now I am wondering what we have in Darryl Richardson.
Weird how that works. I couldn't have cared less when SJ left. I never had an attachment to him in any way for some reason. I think he enjoyed being the ONLY fish in that barren pond back then. Not sure why, I just never thought of him as a team guy. Todd certainly had his pouty moments this year, which actually makes me wonder now about our HC and how players feel about him. I hate seeing Todd go, but it had to happen after they screwed up that deal. More of a management fail to me.....

I think you're right. I remember a press conference after that game where Gurley mentioned he was in so much pain, he thought about giving the Rams their money back. I think he got injured during the Raiders game, and I think the dagger was against the Chiefs on MNF. He was never the same after that game.

IMO the Rams should never sign another player that is used as a feature back to a second contract. They get too beat up and are never the same after the first five years. This will end up being a very expensive lesson for them and I hope they learn from it. Plus they seem to create problems in the locker room when their carries are reduced, in an attempt to expand their NFL life expectancy. I will be surprised if Gurley passes his physical.

Therein lies the problem. The rbs should have a maximum 3 year contact as a rookie with no option year or ability to tag them. Why should they miss out on making money when they get the most beatings out of all the players.

Then why were the Rams unable to trade Gurley? If he was a steal?

I'm sure he meant he is a steal at $5 million. And he probably is, if he can get 14 TDs.
But I'm just done with his attitude and moping, and acting like any questions about him should not be asked, and that no one should know the REAL truth about his current injury or physical health.

Now in hindsight your more likely right that's what @rams1fan was zeroing in on.

I have always been highly proud of the Rams having Gurley as the real face of our offense. Most know I have been a big supporter....but I have not been so happy with what I have seen since the end of the 2018 season. Being a big SEC guy Gurley was great draft selection even though I was not in favor of using that high draft pick on a RB. Gurley made me reset my thoughts on that. Watching Gurley run 2015 through 2017 seasons was seriously good entertainment for this old Rams fan.

I did grow so tired of all the media circus surrounding him & the Rams use & on & on & on.......... It was best for him & the Rams to have a separation.

Honestly, he’s been pretty childish throughout this whole thing. He sounds butthurt, and it makes me feel like the rumors about his locker room presence is true. I also read the knee is apparently pretty bad. So maybe this is his way of coping.

Or maybe I’m looking too deep into it. Who knows.

I really don't take Whitworth as the type who would praise TG's inspirational presence if he didn't mean it.

I do. What’s he supposed to say? I’m sure Todd was a good friend and fun to be around. But he seems to get pissy when things don’t go his way. Whitworth is a consummate professional. He knows exactly what to say in these situations.

Yeah I agree he knows exactly what to say--Whit's very articulate and has many options at his disposal for being posiive without going there--but he chose to specifically characterize Todd's inspirational presence. Just my take, who knows.
