Game Day Thread

The GDT is a live thread tradition here at ROD.

While we all get fired up watching the game, please remember our core principles;we always show respect for our team and each other.

Despite the emotional highs and lows watching a game, we will moderate this thread with that in mind, however please refrain from name calling. This applies to players, the Rams organization, and others.

This is the core rule of the GDT. Moderators are tasked to issue thread bans, at a minimum, to maintain this standard.

This is our team. Win or lose. Good days and bad. We are here for FUN, not to be dragged down.

A more loosely moderated atmosphere can be found in the chat room.

Go Rams!

Rams-Patriots Preview: Last quarter-season push begins on Thursday Night Football

Four games to go.

Win any three of them – so long as that includes a victory over the Seahawks in Week 16 – and the Rams are your 2020 NFC West champions.

Win the next two games, and at a minimum their playoff spot would be assured before heading to Seattle.

Thursday Night Football against the New England Patriots opens the final quarter of the 2020 campaign.

But to what extent is this a Super Bowl LIII rematch?

XIII – III

I'd answer "minimally."

From the jump, it's worth a few lines noting all the key contributors in that game who either are no longer with the Rams and Patriots or won't play on Thursday at SoFi Stadium.

Off the top of our heads in no particular order: Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Todd Gurley, Brandin Cooks, Andrew Whitworth, Ndamukong Suh, Kyle Van Noy, Patrick Chung, Donta Hightower, Cory Littleton, Mark Barron, Marcus Peters, Marcus Cannon, Danny Shelton…

Oh, and the MVP of that game Julian Edelman, who is currently injured.

Even the kickers are different. No Stephen Gostkowski or Greg Zuerlein this time around.

Still Bill: Volume 2

But it makes for good theater, and so why not embrace Sean McVay versus Bill Belichick: Round Two?

McVay repeatedly has described that three-point performance as a humbling night. Whereas he had two weeks to prepare for the Super Bowl, he had at most four days to spin it around for this Week 14 affair.

Then again, rather than framing it as a short week of preparation, one might cheekily suggest that on the contrary, it's been a long two years of plotting for this rematch with the Patriots.

The same could be said of Jared Goff.

A Cautionary Tale

Goff's performance against Brian Flores, who coordinated the defense on that fateful night in Atlanta, betrayed his growth since February 2019.

But courtesy of Pro Football Focus, here's a phenomenal breakdown of why the Rams cannot, should not, and will not be caught expecting leftovers from Miami when they play the Patriots in prime time.

Much like Goff and the Rams, Justin Herbert and the Chargers had struggled against the Dolphins pressure packages and coverages earlier this season. So what did Belichick do last Sunday?

Flores, one of many Belichick disciples across the league, laid bare the shortcomings of a rookie quarterback with a heavy blitz package that left the young Herbert's head spinning in Week 10…

The Patriots ended up playing one snap of Cover 0 blitz. In total, New England blitzed only five times on 56 Herbert dropbacks… Instead of blitzing, Belichick allowed his defensive linemen to play games and stunt against a Chargers offensive line that was ready for the all-out blitz but could not handle simple stunts.

Love him or hate him, you have to respect Belichick's cunning.

"I wouldn't put anything past (the Patriots)," McVay said this week, when asked what he expected from the New England defense.

McVay Strikes Back

Let's give the Rams head coach his due, too. He also possesses a proven track record of Jedi mind tricks, and many on this Patriots roster have never faced him.

Safety Kyle Dugger, edge Josh Uche, linebacker Anfernee Jennings are all rookies who figure to play big snaps in this showdown, just to name a few Patriots who are about to encounter the Rams play-caller for the first time.

Might McVay be able to exploit some of the inexperience on this New England defense the way Belichick has so often done with opposing quarterbacks?

Fantasy Football

In a parallel universe we'd all like to visit someday, Cooper Kupp did not tear his ACL in 2018 and went for 130 yards and two touchdowns in a Super Bowl LIII win over New England.

We've all played that "What If" game, and it's one of the many reasons to look forward to Thursday night, when the Rams leading target will be in Horns.

And Kupp is due.

The last time he hit paydirt was that 55-yarder against the Giants at SoFi Stadium in Week 4 against the Giants.

Winning for (Less Than) One Hundred, Please

Cam Newton hasn't reached 100 yards passing in New England's last two games – both wins.

In fact, he's thrown for fewer than 85 yards in each. The last player to do that was Akili Smith with the Bengals in 2000, and he was benched in one of those victories, per NESN's Zach Cox.

In part, Newton's numbers last week were a reflection of the 45-point blowout. But they're not an inaccurate depiction of who he is at this stage of his career.

Newton is the first quarterback in NFL history with multiple rushing touchdowns in at least four games within a season, according to Elias.

Winning Edge

And my goodness, can he still threaten a defense.

Watch this breakdown by former NFL linebacker (and one-time Rams training camper) Matt Chatham.

The Rams will really be tested on the perimeter Thursday, in a different way than last week against a reluctant 5-foot-10 Kyler Murray.

At 6-foot-5 and 248 pounds, Newton is a force.

"You bring your big boy pads," Aaron Donald said of turning the page to this week's challenge.

As if he has any other kind, right?

Dink and Dunk Contest

Here's the thing about high percentage throws: layups and dunks are good things, even in an era of three-point barrages.

McVay and Goff didn't turtle-shell after the turnover-doomed loss to San Francisco. They sprayed the football all around State Farm Stadium, passing 47 times last weekend and completing passes to nine different targets.

True, those were largely bread-and-butter plays. Goff averaged a career-low 3.3 air yards with 35 of his throws coming within five yards of the line of scrimmage and 16 thrown at or behind the line, according to NextGen Stats.

They also broke Arizona's containment plan, hitting 13-of-16 passes from outside the pocket, the most such completions by any player since ESPN began tracking the stat in 2009.

I get that there's still a vertical element missing from this offense. But we also need to respect the fact that the Rams are answering the questions defenses are presenting properly. And it's not as if Goff didn't thread some needles in Week 13.

Fourth The Win

I said it Sunday during the game and want to repeat it here: One of the most encouraging things the Rams did against the Cardinals was fail on fourth down. Twice.

As cutthroat as McVay can be as a play-caller and master motivator, he's objectively one of the most conservative game managers in the NFL and has been throughout his tenure.

And with a defense this stout, especially coming off a four-turnover loss to the 49ers, there was an argument to be made that conservative was the way to play it in Arizona.

I tend to frame it the other way: With a defense that imposing, they're giving you every reason to go for it. And indeed, when the Rams offense failed on fourth-and-six in the opening quarter, the defense forced a three-and-out. Ditto, when they came up short again on fourth-and-goal in the second quarter.

McVay's willingness to go for those fourth downs communicated a confident disposition and total trust in his team, in addition to embracing the analytics of it all. Over time, the math says those decisions will translate into more points and wins.

Kickoff for Rams-Patriots at Sofi Stadium is scheduled for 5:20 p.m. pacific time on FOX, NFL Network and Amazon Prime Video.

Thursday Night's Los Angeles Rams Matchup: The Measuring Stick Game Sean McVay Has Been Waiting For

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay is not just an avid student of the game but a fan of great coaching. That said, in the moments leading up to Super Bowl LIII, he fell slightly short of appearing teenage-girlish giddy with the privilege of facing the NFL head coach he respects and admires as much as any, if not more: Bill Belichick.

Well, Belichick and his New England Patriots (featuring Tom Brady) went on to not only beat the Rams in McVay’s biggest game to date, but thoroughly stifle McVay’s offense to the point of an embarrassment that hasn’t quite faded away approaching two years later. It was some serious schooling that Belichick did that day. He may never fully admit to enjoying it on the level that one can imagine a Hall of Famer would when taking on the latest, greatest and next best thing in coaching.

Ever slight that it appears, McVay’s ego took a hit that day. Belichick, perhaps by glorious design, humored him right off focus. By game’s end, McVay no longer wore the face of a giddy school girl but a woman scorned.

The Measuring Stick Game Sean McVay Has Been Waiting For

The Week 14 Thursday Night Football match-up features the two teams presently responsible for the lowest-scoring Super Bowl ever played: 2018 Super Bowl LIII’s 13-3 New England Patriots victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Some (myself included) thought the game itself was better played than the post-game criticism warranted. Even still, it left a lot to be desired. Most experts had it tabbed as a wild shootout and Las Vegas oddsmakers saw the Patriots as 2.5-point favorites with an over/under at a whopping 57. For that reason, bettors buying the hype found it to be an even bigger disappointment.

Thursday night’s game, seen as a redo or redemption game only in the hearts of Rams fans, all but guarantees to end up more entertaining. The most interesting storyline (at least, to students of the game) just might be the one no one is talking about as yet. Specifically, the maturation of Sean McVay.

To Be the Best, You Have To Beat the Best

Sure, we all know or have heard all too often – most might even agree – that Bill Belichick is or is one of the greatest NFL head coaches of all time. He’s once again being mentioned as a consideration for 2020 Coach of the Year honors. Possible, with the magic he’s pulling off and with everything he’s had to deal with this season (so far). But for the most part, this future Hall of Famer reached his coaching summit years ago in the way of upside and potential.

McVay, on the other hand, has had such an amazing start to his head coaching career. People (most fans and media types alike) too often forget that he was in his head coaching infancy a mere three seasons ago. They’ve labeled him genius and called him boy wonder. They’ve taken all of it back only to start back up the hype and praise engine again.

People, greatness is achieved over time. Witnessing it and recognizing its character doesn’t take as long. Coach McVay is no more today that same coach who coached Super Bowl LIII’s no-show offense than Belichick’s 2020 team is compared to the team that won that game.

Defensively, Rams Key Priorities Should Be…

Limiting Cam, of course!

The game itself will no doubt begin with every bit the post-season feel. However, if the Rams coaching staff has diligently studied, at the very least, last week’s Patriots dismantling of the Los Angeles Chargers they should have Cam Newton’s number by halftime. He excelled at setting up the Chargers defense with modest drop-backs designed to buy time. Cam would quickly scan the trenches for weaknesses before shifting into drive for several yards on expected pass plays. However, Aaron Donald is present this week. There will be a lot less Newton up the middle.

The Rams linebackers will have their hands full countering numerous jet sweeps to running backs but should adjust well enough. And then there’s that Rams secondary. Newton is in for a long day full of pressures and hurries, so quite possibly sacks and interceptions, too.

Offensively, Rams Key Priorities Should Be…

Unlimiting Cam (and Malcolm and Darrell), of course!

Establishing a run game early is what usually helps the Rams most, especially in scripted plays. The possible return of running back Cam Akers (listed as limited: shoulder) is inspiring. Malcolm Brown would certainly be a change of pace in the flow of this game and would definitely add wear and tear should he get some pound opportunities in the first half. Darrell Henderson is extremely capable of making a few fantasy football players happy if Akers can’t go.

The Rams can be expected to dish out a healthy serving of Cooper Kupp. The highly-talented but underrated receiver did not play in the Super Bowl and figures to be a major factor Week 14. Rookie receiver Van Jefferson was a key factor last week versus the Arizona Cardinals and it would be ultra-wise for McVay to bombard a Belichick-coached team with all the talent at his disposal if for no other reason than future data should the two meet again down the road.

Last Word on Sean McVay and the Game Within the Game

It’s highly unlikely that either head coach would publicly exude more enthusiasm towards this Week 14 event than what’s normal for both. But make no mistake, Bill Belichick has no intentions of going gently into that good night despite the opinions of experts oddsmakers (Patriots +5, opened at 6.5). What’s more, any greatness Sean McVay will ever allow into his psyche will be held to the standard of what lies ahead and above, not what (or who) is currently rising with him with as little accomplishments.

This is Game 2 of a developing chess series that is a young upstart challenger in Bobby Fischer versus the seasoned defending champion, Boris Spassky. In Game 2, I’ve got Bobby by nine points.

Somebody make a tackle Damnitttttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tackles or lack thereof will be important to this game. Saw too many tries to strip the ball than secure the tackle he last few games by the Rams defense.

Ok...I'm over the SF loss 2 weeks back...and the win over the Cards helped that.

Folks...WE HAVE ANOTHER MCVAY/GOFF TEST. It's that plain!

For McVay...is he willing to include his TEs and RBs to attack the Pats defense? We know the Pats are gonna be in a lot of man coverage.

For Goff...is he going to be willing to take what the Pats give in the pass game? Is he willing to use his mobilty and can he see the defensive weakness of the Pats.

On defense...is the DAINESE amped up to stop the run? The Pats will try to keep it a low scoring game and will try to grind out with the run.

Lastly...Rams Special Teams HAD BETTER COME TO PLAY.

I see a Rams win 27-17!!!

This has a bit of a playoff game feel to me. If we win and control the game, we will go in the last 3 games with all the confidence we need to slingshot into the playoffs with a winning streak.
If we lose, it will be in a way that creates a lot of doubt (and I think the rest of the NFC west wins). Bad bad bad.

Another shaky kicking situation

By Kenneth Arthur@KennethArthuRS Dec 10, 2020, 10:27am CST

The Rams have used three kickers this season. Are we ready to make it four?

After cutting Sam Sloman and placing Kai Forbath on injured reserve, the Rams turned to Matt Gay in Week 11, where he promptly missed a 44-yard field goal try against his former TB Bucs. To his credit though, Gay has gone 10 of 10 on extra points over his three games with LA and that is unfortunately a bright spot relative to what the Rams have seen from the position so far in 2020.

Though it’s not as though Sean McVay and Les Snead didn’t set themselves up for this folly.

But Gay, who has made five of seven field goal tries, also missing a 37-yarder on Sunday against the AZ Cards, could be held out of Thursday night’s contest against the NE Pats. He has been listed as questionable due to a shoulder injury.

Should the Rams need to go to the emergency well, Austin MacGinnis remains on the practice squad. MacGinnis was seemingly everyone’s third-place finisher in the offseason competition between him, Sloman and Lirim Hajrullahu (whose last name I learned to spell for almost no reason at all other than moments like this), but he could somehow wind up as the fourth-place option kicking for the LA Rams in December.

All added up, the Rams kickers have made 15 of 21 field goal tries this season, including 0-of-1 from 50+ yards and 4-of-7 from 40-49 yards. For the record, Greg Zuerlein is 22-of-28 on tries this season, but is 1-of-6 from 50+ yards for the Dallas Cowboys. Zuerlein has been mostly accurate inside of 50, though he has missed three extra points.

Whether it is Gay or MacGinnis, we can guarantee that there are no guarantees coming from LA’s kicker tonight.

Another wrinkle is that Gay has also been handling kickoff duties.
