Damn, how 'bout that sub .500 team leading in the the championship game right now. First saw the score at 17-0. Closed the gap a little though. Perez the difference between now and the losing team early on.

Really cool that former Ram Luis Perez won the MVP of the XFL Championship.

Who is Luis Perez? How Renegades' midseason trade for QB sparked team to XFL championship game run

Luis Perez is no stranger to spring football. From the AAF to the XFL to the USFL to the XFL again, the quarterback has made the rounds. He has also seen several NFL practice squads throughout his football career.

Perez played last year with the New Jersey Generals, where he split time time with quarterback De'Andre Johnson. Perez played in nine games and started six, throwing for 1,200 yards, good for fifth in the USFL. His opponent in the upcoming XFL championship, Jordan Ta'amu, led the league.

Perez started this year with the Vegas Vipers before being traded midseason to the Arlington Renegades. The Renegades finished the regular season just 1-2 in the games with Perez at QB, but he had a monster game against the Roughnecks in the South Division championship.

Perez, indeed, threw for 289 yards on 19 of 27 passing. He had three touchdowns and no interceptions in that game, and the Renegades came away with a 26-11 win. Now, he'll face the toughest challenge of the season, a Defenders team that has lost just one game this year.

Here's what to know about Luis Perez heading into this year's XFL championship.

Luis Perez NFL career

Born in San Diego, Perez played two years of junior college ball at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, Calif., before finishing his collegiate career at Division II Texas A&M-Commerce.

Perez signed with the Rams in 2018 after going undrafted and played in a preseason game but was waived by Los Angeles before the season began.

Since that brief stint, Perez has been on a few NFL practice squads. He spent about a month with the Eagles after the AAF was suspended in 2019, and later that summer he had a four-day stint with the Lions.

Perez was also with the Rams again for a little under a month in 2022.

Luis Perez spring football history

Despite never sticking in the NFL, Perez has become a spring football mainstay.

Alliance of American Football — He was a key cog on the Birmingham Iron in the AAF, throwing for 1,460 yards and helping the Iron clinch a playoff berth before AAF operations were suspended.

XFL (first stint) — Following his time with the Eagles and Lions, Perez joined the Los Angeles Wildcats in the XFL. However, Josh Johnson's addition to the Wildcats led to him being traded to the New York Guardians. Perez started two games in New York before COVID-19 ended the season after Week 5.

USFL — Perez joined the New Jersey Generals for the USFL reboot in 2022. The Generals split time between Perez and De'Andre Johnson at QB, with Perez throwing the USFL's first TD.

His signature moment, however, was a game-winning drive against the Gamblers that was capped off by a gutsy QB sneak. He finished fifth in the USFL in passing in 2022.

XFL (second stint) — Perez was picked up by the Vegas Vipers as their starting QB, where he played fairly well. However, he was traded midseason to Arlington, where he went 1-2 as a starter (he didn't play the week of the trade). Perez, however, had a huge game against the Roughnecks in the playoffs, throwing three touchdowns without an interception in a 26-11 win.

How old is Luis Perez?

Despite his numerous stops, Perez is just 28 years old.

Born August 26, 1994, Perez has been around professional football since the 2018 NFL Draft.

Perez has come up short in some past stops, but he's seeking his first championship in any of these leagues. Arlington could be getting hot at the right time. But it has a tough opponent in D.C. for the championship.

Wonder how much roster turnover there will be for next season. Hope even more folks fill the stands and follow the league now that they have a full season under their belt.

XFL 3.0 was a pretty fun watch overall the past few months. Need to iron out some of that weird scheduling they had, though venue availability I'm sure played a part in it. Hope the league also makes the games more available to people outside of the ABC games!

The USFL has been more available TV wise, for me. I wanted to watch more XFL than I could.

I get both USFL games today. (y)

That's a plus for the USFL having a good amount of games available over-the-air with mainline Fox and NBC. It's good to be owned by a TV network! Just wish USFL had the same crowd enthusiasm as the XFL. Just adds a little more to the games. Even the 3 home hub teams haven't been drawing much. Doesn't help that Michigan and Memphis have sucked at home. The defending champs should be getting a little more down in Birmingham, too. Hoping both leagues keep it going, but don't know how sustainable that would be.

I like the “established look” of both teams uniforms. Memphis and New Orleans both.

These unis are pretty good.

Agreed. Last season I was thinking there were too many teams with red. Granted they only got rid of one of them (TB), but it helps. And the Maulers changed their purple and look like the Penguins now.

Thought we'd get another down to the wire game. Nah, NO fizzled too soon. Looks like no more undefeated teams left.

The XFL and USFL will help get some players NFL jobs. It won’t be many and there won’t be any “stars” slip thru the cracks to those leagues… but that’s the hope for these leagues; some players will step up.

Glad they have a path to keep the dream alive. Bring on a new set of players chasing the dream. Every year a true fresh start for every team. Long live spring football!

The announcers at the Houston/New Orleans game had a long conversation about Eric Dickerson.

How there's never been another runner that looked as smooth as he did.
Effortless, and his ability to get those long legs up to speed quickly.

They said the kids are missing out who haven't looked back and watched his highlights.

So true.
