Drafting Jefferson has tipped the FO's hand regarding Robert Woods. Because of having to carry massive dead cap this year and next year, I believe they will allow Woods contract to playout. In 2021 Woods becomes a FA and probably is allowed to walk. Jefferson will step into that X receiver role. As I've stated elsewhere on this board, Jefferson is a hybrid with the speed of Woods and the route running of Kupp. With Robert's contract being $9.1M the Rams will have to choose between Wood or Everett. Everett will take about $10M / year to extend. Reynolds isn't as good as Everett but he will be much cheaper to sign. Also, they have Hopkins so between the two they will have that Y receiver covered.

If I was Snead and I figured I'm going to lose Everett next year I'd trade him. In the right system, Everett could be a Hunter Henry type TE. IMO Gerald has far more upsides than Tyler but McVay simply doesn't use him.

There is going to be a lot of movement next year and a lot of it will depend upon how well Jefferson plays this year. I think we will see the majority of his snaps from the slot (Y) but also I wouldn't be surprised if he takes some at X. If he can play X and beat the CB jam the handwriting will be on the wall for Woods.

Replacing Woods production from n this offense with a rookie or second year receiver is highly unlikely imo. Woods hasn't shown a sign of decline either. Jefferson will have be be something special for this plan to come into fruition.

regarding the Everett/Woods debate on which to keep, to me it's Woods all the way. He's much more productive and integral to this offense. I'd prefer to keep them both though

Anything is possible, it was a very common thought in mocks this offseason that Woods would be traded. Turned out to be Cooks but next year anything is possible. As for Everett potential is all well and good but if you don't realize it on the field on a regular basis it's a waste and he's yet to realize that potential more than occasionally. Back to Jefferson though the real reason IMO he was drafted is he's a prototypical McVay WR nothing more. People think we can't have 3 of the same type guy at WR, hell I was one of them before the draft, but if you tell me we can have 3 guys get 75 catches 1000 yards and 8+ TD's and they're all similar and the defense can't key on any one of them along with 2 explosive backs and Higbee I'm all in chips in the middle of the table. Don't see why this is a problem in some threads.

I think the “real reason” they drafted Jefferson is to serve as a replacement for ANY of the current top 3 WR.

Snead often talks about roster building as “a complicated puzzle with many moving parts.” They make drafting decisions in part to maximize their flexibility.

Will Kupp resign with us, or will he play hardball and leave for the highest bidder? Will Reynolds walk in 2021, or will he resign with the Rams for a reasonable deal? And later on, will Woods give us another home team discount, or will he go elsewhere?

Nobody can predict with certainty what will happen. Jefferson seems versatile enough that he could fill the role for any of the WR positions.

There is no question that Woodie will get a big contract based on his production with the Rams. Was Jefferson drafted with that in mind? Maybe in a contingency plan type of way. Hard to argue against that.

The interesting thing with Goff and this passing game is its never missed a beat when one WR went down. We lost Watkins and people were about to lose their minds. We lost Kupp and Woods for long stretches and the beat went on. Cooks as well. So this tells you the Rams know their offense is plug and play with WR's. Hell, we made the Super Bowl without Kupp.

We will have some money in 2021, so if these young guys on the Oline and in the draft pan out and we don't have to dip in Free Agency then Maybe we pay Woods.

The bills screwed Woods badly. They cost him millions of dollars because of how they used him for 4 years. Making him a blocker for their rbs.

Remember when Everyone laughed at the rams when they signed him to that "exorbitant" contract?

He deserves $15m+per year but not sure he'll still get it when his current deal ends.

I think we drafted Jefferson because he fits the mold the Rams look for in a WR.

Simply, Jefferson plays like Woods and Kupp. Jefferson will be where he needs to be on the field, as the ball arrives.

FIRST off ??? WOW ?? Robert Woods being traded ???

Your right about Jefferson, but as I’ve stated way back with McSnead it’s about playmakers. The draft played out just the way I thought it would have.Easy to see.

No O’lineman & RB first. The Rams needed to replace what they lost this offseason.

The value was there for Jefferson.Deep WR class. Perfect fit.

EXACTLY!!! The value was there as well. His contract fits moving forward.
Gets mentored by the best.
MCSNEAD always says you can’t have enough playmakers.

I’ll continue to laugh about the Center position. John Sullivan meant WAY more to The Rams than Mcvay knew.
That said The Rams will continue to compete & McVays squad will continue to Mentor of men.

Austin Blythe was a good Free Agent pickup. Andrew Whitworth was a good free agent pick up.

Robert Woods,Sullivan, & Andrew Whitworth were all EXCELLENT core Rams Free Agents that helped build The Rams offense that it is today as players.

Eric Yarber does not get enough credit for how well his squad has played.

He got extended. He still blocker & got voted by teammates an award for doing so.

As far as the post started ??? I’m not predicting the future. The reason for Jefferson being drafted by The Rams was value & fit.

What The Rams are trying to build is a foundation.

I go back to one of my wild adventures having about my ..06 alcohol intake & heading down the 405 to my first & only time to the old Chargers stadium.Passing it many times & knowing a guy that was working the grounds of Cal Dominguez. My only time there was watching a couple friends play baseball for the Home Team to finish out there careers.

Long story shorter. Had 3 Heineken bottles in a bag, parked at Cal for free & walked to the Stadium.Wanted to watch the scrimmage. Chargers only.

Was at the Rams booth when Robert Woods parents came over. Was a fly on the Wall. As a Forever USC Ram Fan it was pretty cool to be there. They were living basically blocks away still.

Robert Woods is a GREAT HOME town guy that is as BIG as a FREE AGENT pick up there ever has been.

Andrew Whitworth is going to be a Hall of Fame Ram!!! He reminds me of
the dinosaur of Jackie Slater!!
Robert Woods career I do not know where or how it will end up,but what he has meant to The Rams Organization has been as good as any Hall of Fame Ram!!!

Btw- going to add a special core Ram that has meant a lot on the other side of the ball for what everyone has said about him & his contracts. It’s not only about what a player means on the field. Michael Brockers is a class act & a True Tam!!

The interesting thing with Goff and this passing game is its never missed a beat when one WR went down.

The main reason McVay could run '11' personnel as much as he wanted was because of the players he had at his disposal. One of the league's best offensive lines, Gurley in the backfield, and Kupp, Woods and Cooks on the field at the same time. They would stretch defense thin, and made it difficult to focus their coverage on any one player.

When Woods went out in 2017 it meant we only had two reliable receiving options on the field at one time, Gurley and Kupp. Watkins couldn't pick up the slack and he was drawing more coverage . This especially was a factor in the loss to the Eagles.
I thought Kupp's absence from the offense was quite noticeable in 2018. More than a little correlation with Goff's late season struggles in 2018. And definitely in the Super Bowl. Kupp being out and Gurley being diminished made the Rams offense much easier to defend.
With Cooks struggles in 2019 we weren't effective throwing the deep ball.

I like Reynolds enough as a WR4 and in 2018 he filled in as ably for Kupp as you could expect, but it wasn't the same.

I think the more probable scenario is Reynolds and Everett gone. Woods just turned 28 in April and has a number of good years left. But yea anything is possible and it all comes down to the money. This season will tell us a lot regarding the future of Everett and Reynolds...I still think we trade one of them. I'm very, very excited to see Jefferson this year and I agree I think people underestimate his speed because he didn't run at the combine.

The "real reason" they drafted Jefferson is actually multiple reasons, none of which have anything to do with Woods or Kupp. He has a lot of talent, good hands, great routes, good head, pedigree and he fits McVay's scheme like a perfect puzzle piece. Robert Woods is by far, the best Ram receiver and has been since they signed him in 2017. He has talent, good hands, great routes, great head and blocks anywhere on the field with aggression. Kupp is Kupp. Everything you want in a WR except blazing speed. Jefferson is simply an extension of these two and he's probably the most NFL ready WR in the 2020 draft class. This has nothing to do with letting Woods or Kupp go....ain't gonna happen. As far as Everett is concerned, if he's allowed to walk (or is traded) it's because Brycen Hopkins is a good TE. There are many facets of managing the cap but planning on how to get rid of your best players, is not one of them.

Bobby Trees is possibly my favorite player on the team and also one of my fave all time Rams WRs. The ultimate We not Me guy. I'd almost think he would give the Rams a home town discount to stay in LA, but he shouldn't. That dude has far outplayed his contract IMO.

I think your discounting Reynolds big time. & everyone else that is not paying attention??

As far as Woods I have no idea what his future will be. 2020 is the season for him now.

Copper Kupp as well. He might be the one who is gone next season ?? No one is really talking about that as much ??

Everett is a cap play so just as much as Kupp goes, Everett goes until signed.

Didn’t he get extended?

Anyway he is signed until 2021.
