The Rams’ pass rush really took the off after trading for Von Miller…or did it?

In the big games he and Donald were a wrecking crew, especially in the second half of the Super Bowl. That's what the Rams were hoping for in trading for Miller. Mission accomplished, well done Rams. It was also a good move the Rams let him walk. He's not worth the cap catastrophe that would have followed had they followed suite with Buffalo. The Rams have managed well.

Last year J. Williams was practicing on the edge. This year he's at 1T and 3T most of the time. He can play all along the DL. His sack was a thing of beauty and illustrated how far he's come and how much more he can be. In many ways he's a bigger Hardy, though Hardy is more athletic. Both Williams and Hardy are much faster than Lewis. Terrell must prove that he's done with his knee and can be a dominant edge. Something he's yet to prove.

Hoecht, Gaines and Williams are showing that this defense is well served without Robinson who is in a contract year and whom the Rams might not be able to afford next year. They list Robinson as a DE but though he's played there he lacks the speed to play there other than on run downs. His best spot is as a 1T where his size and strength dominate. I don't see Robinson on the roster after this year.

The Rams were literally leading the league in sacks when they made the trade for Miller.

The early starting DL trio of Day/Robinson/Donald offered up very little in the pass rush.

Later when Gaines became the starter he began to bring in some heat in place of Day. But in truth, the 2021 DL makeup was full of run stuffers & so it remains the same in 2022. No change!

Hopefully, coach Henderson can get some additional improvement from mixing in Jonah Williams but other than the suspended big young Bobby Brown, I see no real good outlook on this pass-rush subject.

Strong consideration of utilization of that 2nd rd selection in 2023 for a DL pass rusher is clearly evident.

A lot of good points in this thread. I do kinda feel like people forget about Flo. I can see him having his best year yet in front of these linebackers. He's that' guy.

Yeah I do love 54. We need him on the strong side of the formation on run downs, but maybe this year we see more of him on that blind side on passing downs, assuming he is fully back from that injury and putting better rushes together. It's a fair point that he might be able to do more. We do have options on the edge it's just relatively speaking our weakest spot on that right side due to the injury history with Lewis and us needing to rely on a rotation.

What,s crazy is how much Gaines &Robinson have meant to The Rams.

I think T. Lewis will surprise a lot of Rams Fans in 2022.Myself included.I think since training camp he has made big strides to get bigger,stronger,healthie,a long with getting mentally focused on what is going to be asked of him.

Well in Bobby Browns case it starts in 2022(now). I might not understand his injury from the preseason.I posted he needed to push himself through injury because of the PED issue.

we all have no clue what is in store for the season really.Mcvay has got The Rams to game 1 healthy. No major injurie,but The Not For Long league will come into effect at so point.

Miller's impact was similar to Ndamukong Suh's. I haven't run the numbers, but that's my sense of it.

Suh was replaceable and so is Miller.

I'm pinning my hopes on Justin Hollins to mature and play his game, like we know he can.

Miller stopped the bleeding against the run game.

Agreed and he also made it damn near impossible to run a screen to his side.

Once Miller settled in to this defense his impact was undeniable. Pressures are probably the most poorly recorded stat because they're subjective so you really need to use your eyes in evaluating the difference.

Without Von we would not have made the Super Bowl let alone won it. He changed this defense fundamentally in his pressure on the QB and setting that clock in their head. He changed the run defense where that side was not that great at contain or short yardage but it was after Von came in. They were finding pressure with fewer rushers. I haven't looked at the Passer Rating Against but I would hazard a guess that if you want to find quantification of his impact maybe you will see a big difference about a couple games after Von came aboard.

And I think there's a couple different ways to look at his loss to our defense as well. That blindside won't have his pass game threat so the key is keeping a fresh rotation out there and ensuring you don't dip vs the run because edge contain is crucial. And also I think it could be argued that he probably would have coasted this season and he knew that and that might be why he went to Buffalo on top of the money. I mean I'm sure we'll get all he has in game one. No doubt there. But he'll be taking plays off through the season for sure.

We should be in the playoff defense range for sacks and pressures basically, because of AD bringing that inside heat. We just won't be a top pressures defense like we were post-Von. And it can still work if the secondary improves a ton which is very possible. And re: the run game we have been good for a couple years now, so it is likely Wags bumps us to elite run defense which would give the pass defense a little more cushion over the span of a season to work with as well. Our chances really come down to the defense I think, because our offense will certainly be elite, barring the OL disintegrating.

Both Suh and Donald wanted sacks, which meant taking chances and getting burned on the run at times.

von miller was a slight loss... compared to how the d was already playing...

yes there was an improvement in contain on the edge... i'm not so sure it was an off the charts improvement, but it did look better...

IMHO, as i watched the playoffs, and this is just from memory, no facts, but it sure seemed like the rams interior line was turning up the heat as the game moved closer to the 4th qtr and into the 4th....

what i saw was 3 junkyard dogs,(AD,Gaines A"Shawn) that were throwing down like no other... and then we had von doing what he does, and reaping the benefits of the opposing, having to adjust to try to stop the continuous jailbreak coming up the middle...

it brought back mid to late 60's watching the rams "D" feelings...

so we lose von...and i was a little upset when we lost him...

"talking heads"= the rams just picked up "lost a step" bobby wagner....

geeze... do the rams EVER get positive press???... it's so f&$cking annoying!!!...

i'm thinking BW comes out, and is going to turn up the volume so loud, the talking heads ears wil bleed...

there's no way the loss of von, and the gain that is BW, is not a massive improvement...

I think we will be stout up the middle of our defense, with Bobby Wagner. He'e also able to direct the defensive calls at a high level, which instills confidence. I'll miss Von some, but I think Von is going to miss us more without AD and Jalen Ramsey. and Greg Gaines.

I am pretty optimistic about how good they can be.

My only concern about the swap of LBs will come in the 1st game. Miller will be amped and healthy. It could be the only time the loss of miller will affect us.
