Patriots place Brandon Gibson on injured reserve

The Patriots added wide receiver
Reggie Wayne to the roster early on Monday and they erased another wideout’s name from the depth chart in the afternoon.
Brandon Gibson has been placed on injured reserve after he suffered a knee injury against the Saints on Saturday. Gibson would have been one of the receivers competing with Wayne for a spot behind
Julian Edelman,
Brandon LaFell and
Danny Amendola.
Gibson signed with the Patriots this offseason after catching 59 passes for the Dolphins over the last two seasons. He suffered a torn patellar tendon after catching 30 passes in his first seven games with Miami in 2013 and was released for cap reasons early in the offseason.
With Gibson out of the picture, Wayne will now vie for snaps with
Aaron Dobson,
Josh Boyce and
Brian Tyms. Dobson and Tyms have been ailing of late, however, and that could help the veteran’s chances of sticking with the team he faced many times as a member of the Colts.
The Patriots signed linebacker D.J. Lynch to fill the open roster spot.

Packers announce Jordy Nelson will miss the season

As expected, the 2015 football season of Packers receiver
Jordy Nelson has ended before the regular season even began.
The team has announced that Nelson sustained “a significant right knee injury” during Sunday’s preseason game at Pittsburgh, and that he’ll miss the entire season. While the press release from the team didn’t specify the type of knee injury, it’s reportedly a torn ACL.
Twenty years ago, former Steelers defensive back Rod Woodson sustained a torn ACL in Pittsburgh on the first Sunday of the regular season, in a game against the Lions. He had surgery, underwent rehab, and returned to play in Super Bowl XXX, an eventual loss to the Cowboys.
The Packers won’t be holding a roster spot for Nelson in the hopes of a postseason return. In an effort to get to the postseason, then, the Packers will now need a plan for life without Nelson.
Jason Wilde of ESPN Wisconsin joined Monday’s
PFT Live on NBC Sports Radio to discuss the situation, and Wilde mentioned that
James Jones could be returning to the team — if he’s among the roster reductions with his current team, the Giants.

Another key member of the Panthers offense has suffered a knee injury.
The good news for the team is that it doesn’t appear to be anywhere near as serious as the torn ACL that has knocked wide receiver
Kelvin Benjamin out for the season. Coach Ron Rivera said Monday that center
Ryan Kalil sprained his left knee during Saturday’s game against the Dolphins and that Kalil will likely sit out the rest of the preseason while trying to get healthy enough to play in Week One against the Jaguars.
“He’s
very valuable to us obviously, so we are going to approach this cautiously,” Rivera said, via the team’s website. “We’ll be smart. The whole idea being what we want to do once we get to Jacksonville.”
Kalil has played every game for Carolina in five of the last six years with the only interruption coming in 2012 when a Lisfranc injury to his foot ended his season after five game.
Brian Folkerts and right tackle
Mike Remmers each saw time at center during Monday’s practice.

Titans cornerback
Jason McCourty has been sidelined most of the month by a groin injury and resting it wasn’t getting him back on the field, so he’s decided to take another approach.
Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt announced that McCourty had surgery on Monday morning in hopes of repairing the injury. Whisenhunt said that he wasn’t sure how long McCourty would
be out of action while he recovers from the operation, but said he didn’t think it was impossible for McCourty to be well enough to play in the season opener.
If McCourty can make it back in time for Week One, he’ll likely be starting at corner along with
Perrish Cox. If he can’t, the Titans will turn to
Coty Sensabaugh or
Blidi Wreh-Wilson, assuming that Wreh-Wilson recovers from the ankle injury that’s kept him off the field recently.
McCourty has started every game for the Titans over the past three seasons. He had 85 tackles, three interceptions and two forced fumbles for Tennessee last season.

Arrelious Benn lands on IR for third straight year

Wide receiver
Arrelious Benn entered the NFL as a second-round pick in 2010, but injuries continue to get in the way of his attempts to find a lasting home in the league.
The Jaguars placed Benn on injured reserve Monday after he fractured his collarbone in Saturday night’s game against the Giants. Reports out of Jags camp were that Benn was having a good summer, but the team will have to look elsewhere for receiver help in the wake of his injury.
Benn landed on injured reserve last year after suffering a concussion in camp with the Eagles and he found himself on the same list in 2013 after tearing his ACL. He last played a regular season game for the Buccaneers in 2012 and has 59 catches for 862 yards and five touchdowns over the course of his career.
With Benn out of the picture, the Jags could really use a healthy
Marqise Lee in the rotation come the regular season. Lee has been out for most of camp with a hamstring injury and the 2014 second-round pick’s brief NFL career has seen several aches and pains keep him from making a steady contribution to the Jacksonville offense.
The Jaguars also waived/injured tackle
Brennan Williams and wide receiver
Damian Copeland. They signed linebacker Mister Alexander, offensive lineman Will Corbin and wide receiver Erik Lora.
