this is why I keep thinking this game against the cheaters is pivotal. They will face a defense just like Miami’s. Can they get through it without he turnovers? Will McVay have a real answer to that defense? And, will Goff and company be able to execute it?

If the answers are all yes then it will be a huge step forward. If not then this team still has a lot to accomplish.
I don't think they can beat us if we don't turn it over. We're 3rd in yards so we give points away way more often than we should.

We have the 6th most turnovers in the entire NFL, with a turnover differential of 0. I don't believe any other team in the top 10 has a winning record.

You could say that we've just been giving away points and games as a result. If we get that cleaned up for the rest of the season I think we can beat anybody.

Great Point!
If we can fix the turnover problem, we have the other stats covered.
Defensive Passer Rating Allowed 78.6 ( second in NFL)
Defensive Yards Per Carry Allowed 3.9 (6th in NFL)

This is a Hardcore Playoff caliber Defense, that is capable of winning the big games.
We take care of the ball we go far. We give it up, we go home.

Along with that the run game needs to get more explosive. We need to be able to lean on it more. If we ask Jarod (or any QB for that matter) to pass the ball 40-50 times a week we're asking for trouble as far as picks and strip sacks.

The run game will get more explosive by default with more Akers touches, not worried about that part of our offense. The issue is, defenses can crowd the line of scrimmage, and play both the run and sit on our short passing game simultaneously.

We are not threatening anyone deep anymore with this dink and dunk passing attack. It's asking a lot of Goff to drop back 10-15 times on one drive, and complete a bunch of 5 yard passes. The more times we drop back the higher the probability for a Goff INT, strip sack, etc. We need to get more explosive in the PASSING game. Goff is 29th in the NFL in Completed Air Yards (how far the ball travels past the line of scrimmage prior to a completion).

The best way to make this running game more explosive is to
continue feeding our young explosive backs.
Akers and Hendo are both big plays waiting to happen , but they have
get the touches. Forget the three man rotation.
Give Akers the lead , let Hendo spell him and feed the hot hand,
I really like the contrast between the two running styles.

IMHO the rest of your post is spot on.
You want to stop Goffs turnovers? Give him a real running game. 2018 Style

I expect to see them start with Brown for his pass defense until they start beating the six man front. I'd definitely try Henderson and Akers on inside run plays.

Goff's been the turnover machine this year, between high interceptions and numerous lost fumbles!

So goes Goff, so goes the Rams!

i agree with you 100%. that tweet is fucking stupid.

how is it easier for the qb to keep dinking and dunking? the defense will catch on and start pressing on the shorter routes. i would say it's harder because the field is compressed.

what's easier is having some speed guy running free down the field wide open. that opens up everything.

man there are a lot of monkeys on twitter.

Gaines fumble recovery & Troy Hills pick 6. I guess all after the Webster fumble.

My guess is why The Rams are even in turnovers.

Short memo to the clueless Sheila K:

Throwing 47 short passes is NOT making life easier on our QB. It's risky and challenging.

Having a really good running game and guys breaking open downfield off play action would make life easier on our QB.

It's extremely difficult and risky. I have not seen any QB in 40 years of watching do it with such precision. Goff also has a great 6th sense of the blitzer and finding a way to accurately getting the ball to his dump off. The whole thing reminds me of the Niners Walsh offense of the early 80's. No running game so they used the short pass. The way Mcvay does it with the WR's and TE's fake blocking and then curling out to the open space is killing teams. Also the way they run the underneath motion guy into the open flat for 8-10 yards is nearly always successful. They will eventually hit that on the deeper route as well if teams cover the underneath guy.

The whole short passing games covers the lack of run game and pass blocking. This is not the 2018 Oline that can pass block for 3+ seconds every snap. Goff still throws a variety of other routes real well. the short slant, the WR screens, curl routes. He just puts on a clinic most games. The main thing Goff needs to work on are the vertical routes and ball security. Throwing it away or taking a sack vs the top defenses is something he needs to master to take that next step. Especially with the current defense and punter.

I think the tweet was just highlighting Goff's avg depth of target but yea I don't agree with the last statement. The short throws themselves are easier, but overall it's ridiculously hard to ask your QB to throw that many times each drive to score points. Especially when he's had trouble with turnovers.

And I've been saying it since last season regarding our lack of deep passing game. Belichick will have his whole secondary sitting on short routes and playing the run simultaneously. We HAVE to find a way to get the ball down the field in the air and be more explosive in the pass game. I hope we see some progress this week, it would be great to start playing our best offensive football heading into the playoffs. Which is the opposite of what happened in 2018.

We need a counterpunch to this, faster.

Every time teams do this to us, we seem to give away possessions figuring out how to deal with it. Or that’s my perception.

Almost like we are surprised by it. But I know we werent...

This game agin NE is a very real test of McVays' ability to put together a better version of our offense, must hit on more 8-10 yard pass plays and get away from the dink and dunk 3-4 yard throws.

I remember on one of the pregame shows (CBS I think) they showed a football with a handle on it (like one from a briefcase) and they said this is what Wendell Tyler needs

I remember a story about Tony Dorsett during his rookie season where the coaches had him use a football with a handle in practice because he had early rookie fumbling problems. It looked more like a short straight bicycle handle for one hand.

I hoping Brown matches his number of carries from last week @3.
I love what Brown has contributed to this team, but I'm also
ready for our 2 young studs to take on a bigger role with this team.

Excellent point, CGI.
This is going to be a very very interesting game to see
how much our HC and QB have matured.
If we don't see that "Counterpunch" it's going to be very disheartening.

Turnovers are a very important stat but the most important one is the W’s. Think we had a tough spell, we should in good shape soon.

I wouldn't mind an upgrade for Brown's spot. But if they were to cut him, they'd need another pounder who could pass block. Its tough to find a pass blocking rb from the college ranks.

Apparently, the counterpunch is a HEAVY dose of B-gap power runs using Everett or a WR as a FB.

I'll make another post about Akers, but yeah, this kid is SNEAKY fast, has the best change of direction we've seen since Faulk and is very patient. And when I say sneaky fast, McCourty, who's one of the fastest in the NFL, had to really pour it on to get an angle on him at one point. That's breakaway speed right there. Not quite Gurley, but as close as we've had...and that includes Hendo.
