Bad luck to the USA -- great performance.
USA , like Australia , suffer in soccer as a result of their domestic football being so powerful -- the majority of the best athletes go to where the $$ is.
freakin Wondo
Lol, easy to be mad at him...but the goal wouldn't have counted even if he buried it into the net. That horrible offsides call would have negated it.
Actually St. Louis truly loves soccer and it's a total joke of epic proportions that they don't have an MLS team. St. Louis used to be where all of the world cup players came from. It's more like Seattle (and the rest of the country) caught up to St. Louis. Look it up. If they did get an MLS team, they could choose only players from St. Louis on their team and could vie for an MLS championship.Yeah more and more people in the USA are realizing how great of a sport football (soccer) really is. It's one of the few good things about living in Seattle, we love the beautiful game more than most in the US!

That's an excellent graphic. But for comparison, Scotland's population of 5 million people supports some 40 professional soccer teams. Admittedly some of those have a core fan base of a couple hundred fans. But the 350m people in the States have 30 teams between them... And Glasgow Celtic (and 1st division rangers, average crowd 47,456) still beat them.
I believe that Soccer will continue to grow in the U.S and more and more top athletes will choose soccer. Especially since it is perceived by most to offer the greatest reward to the youth player. Top athletes are being exposed at young ages to a sport they can be involved in with a chance to be in on every play. It seems like soccer's growth is slow but steady and now we have parents who played AYSO and Club watching their kids play in those very same leagues. This generational familiarity and connection should most certainly bring more viewers. The problem is that in the USA we love high scoring and in our top leagues NFL and NBA when the defense catches up rules change to support more offense. Networks hate that advertising is tough in a sport where their are not many breaks and even fewer scheduled ones at that. That's pretty awesome! I'm hoping after this World Cup football starts to get more love in America, and the MLS to continue to grow.

I became friends with two guys from Glasgow. One was a Catholic and a Celtic fan, and the other a Protestant and a Rangers fan. They shared an apartment and were good friends. But good lord when those teams played each other...just good lord. I would have to go watch the game with them just to keep them from killing each other. That's an excellent graphic.
