Joe Thomas announces retirement
Posted by Charean Williams on March 14, 2018

Browns left tackle Joe Thomas is calling it a career after 11 seasons.

“This was an extremely difficult decision, but the right one for me and my family,” Thomas said, via the team website. “Playing in the NFL has taken a toll on my body and I can no longer physically compete at the level I need to.”

“From the moment I was drafted, the city embraced me in a way that I could never fully describe. I am proud to call Cleveland home. The loyalty and passion of the fans is unmatched and it was an honor to play in front of them from the past 11 years. I would like to thank all of the coaches, teammates, staff, fans and everyone who has shown me support throughout my career. Even though I will be hanging up my cleats, I will always be a Cleveland Brown.”

Thomas had marked the start of free agency today as his self-imposed deadline for a decision on his future. He had acknowledged at a fundraiser Tuesday night that he was excited about the Browns’ offseason moves, but that it might not be enough to bring him back for another season.

Thomas, who played 10,363 consecutive snaps before his injury last season, made 10 Pro Bowls and six times was voted All-Pro.

The Browns knew the longer it took Thomas to decide the less likely he was to return, which is why they pursued several tackles in free agency, including Nate Solder, who agreed to a deal with the Giants.

Cleveland did reach agreements with tackles Donald Stephenson and Chris Hubbard, but both have played primarily on the right side.

Joe Thomas explains that he physically couldn’t do it

Browns tackle Joe Thomas took every snap deep into an eleventh year before an injury ended what would become his last season. On his podcast, The ThomaHawk Show, Thomas explains that the decision was driven by his body’s inability to continue to absorb the grind.

“As a competitor, you always think that you can still do it, but there a point in your career that you get to that crossroads and you say I just can’t do it anymore, I just don’t have it in my body,” Thomas said. “My mind is good, but my body is not willing, and I think that’s where I am.”

Thomas said that he has a knee that simply won’t allow him to continue to practice and play.

“For me, looking down the barrel of a knee replacement, I think that definitely becomes a decision where you’re like, ‘Hey, this football has been amazing, it’s been more than I could ever have expected, but you have to take other things into consideration if you’re deciding if you’re going to be able to play football anymore,'” Thomas said. “The last two to three years of my career it’s been almost impossible for me to practice.”

And so Thomas will be moving on. The sure-fire Hall of Famer never played in a playoff game, and only one of his teams had a record above .500.

Just imagine how much worse the Browns would have been over the last decade without him.

We know the Rams will knock him out for the year the first time we play them lol

To be honest he will probably be out before the Rams game. Not sure how it will feel to se SB be crushed by AD and co. When was the last time the cards played the same QB for both games against the Rams and that QB finished both games? I would guess it had to have been Warner that did it last.
