Good times...

Confused Jimmy Fallon GIF by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

Boy, was that depressing! I admit to being "all in" on Martz at the time (didn't want to lose him), but my goodness did we learn his flaws in short-order. Crazy to me that he never self-corrected.

There was no doubt Vermeil would have ensured the Offense stayed on track. Sadly, the front office made the wrong decision.

I doubt Martz will ever take responsibility for his short comings.

Martz was a shitty ass drafter; aside from S-Jax, Tinoisamoa, and Curtis, none of his picks panned out with us.

(No, I refuse to include Richie Incognito in the whole panned-out category; he was regarded as a genuine piece of shit and team cancer while in college, proved it in the NFL and our team, and rightfully got kicked off of our team before he ever did well.)

Zygmut was a cancer too and Charlie Army was part of being too cute in the drafting part of things. The whole front office/coaching was rotten and as soon as the team that Vermeil put together started to fall apart they couldn't do anything to lift it back up.

Lovie actually kept things going for a hot second (even if he had his flaws).

Textbook example of a bad owner and shit ass front office fucking up a good thing. They were questioning Vermiel iirc after year two, which honestly is a joke considering how fucking bad they were for the duration of the 90s.

So glad we got that title season. It's a miracle that it happened, honestly.

I don't hate Martz btw. He was just not ready to be a head coach. Vermiel was the perfect dude to have above him. And I think Martz in that OC role was :fire1:. Loved the arrogance of that offense.

I'm always going to be salty about Martz given the way he ruined Kurt Warner, who had to go elsewhere to get his mojo back. We had a HOF QB and he was the one who fucked it up by not adapting.

Don't like the title of the video, "The coach that killed a dynasty." Way overstating it!

Rams wouldn't have won it all in 1999-- or been the dominant offense in the NFL for 3 straight years-- without Mike Martz.

Martz had HUGE flaws, no doubt about it. He could be abusive and reckless and a total stubborn ass. But let's not forget-- he absolutely revolutionized the modern NFL offense. Rams were freaking unstoppable.

So saying he "killed a dynasty" is silly, because the Rams wouldn't be in the position of dominance without him.

He killed a dynasty. He did not assemble Kurt Warner (luck), Isaac Bruce, Tory Holt, Az Hakim, MARSHALL FAULK, that O-Line, that Defense…that team would have been successful no matter what, but maybe as not as revolutionary

I'll disagree with ya on this one. Granted, Martz didn't assemble that talent. But his revolutionary schemes were insane. ("Mad Martz" insane.)

NOBODY was doing what the Rams did in 1999. And even with all that, we needed a Ricky Proehl Catch and a Mike Jones Tackle to win it all. No Martz, no SB 34 win. (And frankly, without the Pats cheating by taping practices, Rams would have won a second Lombardi with Martz.)

Besides, you aren't allowed to have a valid opinion as long as you remain Van Jefferson's #1 fan. (I kid, I kid)

You listen here, just because I don’t know how to change that is none of your concern :laugh4:

It really was the most incredible season and window of contending in NFL history. What is amazing about Vermiel's time with the Rams is the organization could not draft well at all in the 90s before he came aboard, and the moment he left they resumed a complete and total inability to draft well. He single handedly held that organization together long enough to build something special. Dude doesn't get enough credit to do what he did with Shaw and Ziggy in that front office. I'll love him forever for what he did for us.

And yes Martz was a key part of things. Remember when we lost to the Titans and he said we aren't gonna lose another game... I laughed when he said that but instantly appreciated the cockiness he showed. I'll always love him for '99 in spite of all the shit that came later. Also I think he was correct about QB needing to be your top competitor.

Honestly, I don't quite understand long-time Ram fans who can't appreciate what Martz did for us.

Rams in 1999 were the miracle of miracles, the season of a lifetime.

2000 was insane, yet another record breaking offense.

2001 was the most dominant Rams team of my lifetime, robbed of a Lombardi by cheating.

2002 was a down year.

2003 was yet another terrific season, 12-4 with a legit chance to win it all, ending with a double OT crazy nail biter loss to Carolina.

And 2004 was a decent year with a win over the Hawks in the playoffs.

AND... no small footnote... after Martz left, the Rams endured the most horrifically pathetic 12-year stretch in the history of the franchise.

So yeah, Martz was crazy and could be a bit of a jerk. But let's not forget how much success the Rams had with him. And how awful it was after he left.
