I look at the suggested cap for next year and see how we are over it by well over 20m.

How do we overcome that?

I know there are some guys here that are terrific with the cap numbers. Can one of you ease my mind? I dont see a way out. Sure, if 77 retires, we will save so much. But how do we keep Darious Williams? We will have to let Johnson and Floyd walk.

Have to wait till the actual number comes out.
Might lose everyone....although Williams is restricted.
Restructure Goff at some point I think.

AD might not like it, but the easiest thing would be to cut ties with Brockers and A'Shawn, and Whit retires.

That'd allow us to sign our low level FAs.

Odds are we lose Brock, Whit, A'Shawn, JJ, Reynolds, Ebukam, Floyd, Everett, Blythe.

We've been acquiring young OL talent, so we have some players there. Would def need to spend our 2nd on an OL I think.

On the DL, we have Gaines and SJD to play for A'Shawn - no huge loss there since we've seen our defense be great without him.

Would need to replace Brockers with a high draft pick.

Losing JJ with how many safeties we lose, need to draft one high.

Finally, edge rusher would be a priority as well.

So we will need four contributors - luckily we might end up with 4 picks on day 2, depending on comp picks. But three on day 2 would still get the job done - however, we'd have big question marks on OL and DL/EDGE which is not good.

But then the following year we should be able to have more space if the cap comes back up and we'd have all our draft picks again.

Its not going to be a hard cap. Extenuating circumstances. There will be a Cap carry over, likely with some overage penalty, but there is just no way the league can substantiate dropping that much salary.

I do think we have way too much cap into our DL, but it seems like every season the cap doesn't really matter that teams can do whatever the fuck they want so who knows.

I wonder sometimes how things might have been if Dickie V. would have stayed.

Tis an alternate universe that we all have fallen into thought about. What could have been? Who knows. Martz may have gone to the cow pokes and a Superbowl... That woulda sucked. I'm ok with how it turned out... I think.

Couple things.

1) you have guys on there signed to long or longer term deals where the dead money means it doesn't help.

2) We don't know what the cap is gonna be, but with teams like the Saints $98M over the cap for next year, we're not in terrible shape overall.

3) Every team will be in this spot and the NFL isn't gonna allow a large chunk of high value players to have to sit out due to the cap. They'll work with the NFLPA to come to an accommodation of some kind.

4) The cap figure of $176M was the worst case scenario and we haven't hit that. Even without the gate, licensed products are flying off the shelves and ratings are up. The cap is gonna take hit, but no one benefits from a watered down product.

I'll have to look at the roster again to get a feel for who I think we'll keep, but suffice to say that A'Shawn, Brockers, Williams and Floyd are strong possibilities or locks to stay.

Ebu is almost assuredly gone.

JJ and Everett are most likely gone.

But yeah, I really don't think it's gonna be roster armageddon...

Yeah, then again, he might have gone to Dallas and found a team that needed rebuilding and fell on his face. He walked right into a Super bowl winning team with the Rams. He was an excellent OC, but I don't know how well he would have done building his own team.

Every year a chunk of the fanbase panics over this and for the last four straight years the Rams have remained relevant, competitive and successful despite all the fat paychecks given out, trades swung and 1st, 2nd rd draft picks dealt.

I just let the Rams front office worry about it. No sense in me trying to figure out what the Rams can do.

They usually just restructure contracts to get under the CAP.

A’shawn is on a three year deal

If we all go the vet during the off season for our vaccination, fans should be back in the stands in 2021. My guess is the owners will find ways to make up what they consider lost revenue. Which in turn will likely fall right in line with your train of thought. 80% of the time I’m right half the time.

After 45 years as Rams fan I do not worry about it anymore. I used to study the draft a lot deeper and monitor the cap and roster management a lot more closely but I have transitioned more to the mindset of trusting management to do their job. Let the management worry about the details as it is ultimately their jobs and reputation on the line. It is just not worth the energy since it is all out of my control. After being a fan for this long I know that sometimes they are going to get it wrong despite their best intentions but they also get it so right sometimes too (Like drafting an undersized defensive tackle with the 13th pick in the first round who now happens to be one the best players in the league and one of the best all-time at his position).

I have always watched football for enjoyment and it is actually lot more enjoyable when I do not stress over the stuff out of my control.
Don't get me wrong, I still watch some of the draft and keep tabs on the off-season roster movement but I do not get worked up over a cut or trade away of a player I like or too excited with a big name acquisition.

It is also easier now because I trust the current management (coach, front office, etc) a lot more than in the days of yore.
