On Tuesday, word emerged of former NFL quarterback Donovan McNabb’s second DUI arrest in Arizona. McNabb addressed the situation on the air at the top of the Tuesday edition of his show.

As of Wednesday, McNabb has left the airwaves, at least temporarily.

“Donovan McNabb is taking immediate leave to address some personal issues, and we support him in this decision,” NBC Sports Radio told TMZ.

McNabb faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 90 days in jail for the June 28 arrest. He spent 24 in jail last year for a first offense.

DEFUNIAK SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) -- Buffalo Bills offensive line coach Aaron Kromer was arrested Sunday in Florida after shoving a boy to the ground and punching him, authorities said.

The Walton County Sheriff's Office said the dispute arose after Kromer and his son confronted three boys about their use of beach chairs while fishing near their home. In a statement, the sheriff's office said Kromer grabbed the boys' fishing pole and threw it in the water before assaulting one boy.

''The victim stated Kromer also told him if he reported him to the police he would kill his family,'' the sheriff's office said.

Kromer, 48, was taken into custody just before 2 a.m. Sunday and released on bond about an hour later, jail records show.

He is charged with battery that caused bodily harm, but the sheriff's office said it was still investigating and additional charges are possible. The sheriff's office did not release the names or ages of the boys who were involved in the incident.

In a written statement, the Bills said, ''We are aware of the report and in the process of gathering the facts.''

Kromer joined the team in January after being fired from the Chicago Bears.

I think my first thought when I read the sheriff’s report on the Aaron Kromer altercation with “boys” at a beach in Florida was, “Where was Kromer thinking?” An arrest report from the sheriff’s office in Walton County, Fla., on Sunday claimed the Buffalo Bills’ offensive line coach—and last year’s Bears offensive coordinator on Marc Trestman’s ill-fated staff—was apparently angry that three boys used beach chairs belonging to Kromer. (I say apparently because it’s not crystal-clear from the report that Kromer owned the chairs.

But that’s the clear conclusion.) According to the sheriff’s report, the boys said Kromer confronted them, and Kromer threw a fishing pole belonging to the boys into the water. Then he pushed one of the boys to the ground and punched him in the face, the report said. That boy, according to the report, “stated Kromer also told him if he reported him to the police he would kill his family.” This is very unlike the Kromer I know.

But it also is due cause for the league to suspend Kromer as soon as today. League bylaws say the NFL can place an employee on either administrative leave with pay or on the Commissioner’s Exempt List (for all intents, the same thing) if an employee is “formally charged with a crime of violence … accused of having used physical force or a weapon to injure or threaten another person.”

If the story is true, it’s hard to imagine Kromer coaching the Bills this season. His assistant, 36-year-old Kurt Anderson, could be elevated; Anderson is a holdover from the Doug Marrone staff, kept by Rex Ryan.

Former Eagles quarterback told police he had a cold, and blamed cough syrup for his recent DUI arrest.

According to Jim Walsh of the Arizona Republic, Gilbert police stopped him after he rear-ended another vehicle, which was being driven by the wife of a Gila River Tribal Police officer.

“While Donovan spoke, I noticed a strong, fruity odor on his breath. I noticed Donovan’s eyes were watery and very bloodshot and his speech was slurred,” the Gilbert officer wrote in the report.

Asked how much he had to drink, McNabb replied: “Nothing,” and said he had a cold and been taking cough syrup. He then opened his mouth to show the police cough drops.

McNabb was then put through field sobriety tests, which he failed. At that point, McNabb told police he just wanted to get home, saying he’d walk the rest of the way.

The arrest was McNabb’s second DUI arrest, and he could face a mandatory minimum sentence of 90 days if convicted.

Former Dolphins cornerback WillAllen faces decades in prison on 23 federal felonies, according to an indictment issued last week.

Allen was charged in April for his part in a Ponzi scheme, bilking investors out of millions of dollars.

Via the Palm Beach Post, the indictment lists 12 counts of wire fraud, six counts of aggravated identity theft, one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and four counts of illegal monetary transactions.

Allen, who also played for the Giants, gave high-interest, short-term loans to professional athletes. Those loans were funded by investors, but Allen ended up with most of the proceeds.

Not many people will remember the name Buster Barnett from his playing days in the NFL. But the four-year tight end with the Buffalo Bills will now be linked to a bizarre tragedy arising from his personal life.

As explained by NBC affiliate WXIA, Barnett’s mistress kidnapped his wife on Wednesday, showing up at the home of Sandra Barnett, 54, in a vehicle owned by Buster. Lisa Brown, 49, drove off with Sandra Barnett.

Police spotted the SUV on Thursday, and began chasing it on Interstate 20, from Georgia into Alabama. At one point, Brown abruptly stopped the car, shot and killed Sandra Barnett, and then shot and killed herself.

Lisa Brown was on probation for kidnapping her child in 2013, after losing custody.

Via AL.com, the police report indicates that Sandra Barnett was on the phone with a co-worker when Brown arrived, and that the co-worker heard Sandra Barnett arguing with Brown, whom Sandra Barnett didn’t seem to know. Barnett was heard saying, “Please don’t hurt me.

Police first became aware of the incident when neighbors reported seeing a suspicious person arguing with Barnett in her garage. The pair were seen leaving in the SUV by a friend who had come to check on Barnett.

The week before training camps open is always a perilous week for NFL players and the law. Even for former players, apparently.

According to Gavin Lesnick of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, former Broncos and Patriots running back Cedric Cobbs was arrested and jailed over the weekend on charges of first-degree promoting prostitution.

The 34-year-old Cobbs was booked on the misdemeanor charge after he reportedly drove a woman to a cheap hotel, where she had arranged to have sex in exchange for money with a person who was actually an undercover officer. Cobbs was arrested while sitting in the car waiting for her.

Police also found a pipe used to smoke methamphetamine in the vehicle’s console as well as another pipe, prescription pills and meth in the woman’s purse.

Cobbs was indicted in October on federal prescription pain pill dealing charges, after being arrested in September 2013 for attempting to purchase pain medication with a fraudulent prescription.

Justin Hunter arrested for felonious assault

Titans receiver Justin Hunter has gone from very thin ice to very hot water.

The 2013 second-round pick, who was called out publicly by coach Ken Whisenhunt last month, currently is in a Virginia Beach jail, where he’s being held without bond.

According to News Channel 5, Hunter was charged with felonious assault following a July 3 incident at the Sandbar Raw Bar in Virginia Beach. Via the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office, the specific allegations are malicious intent, stabbing, cutting, and wounding.

Hunter is due to be arraigned on Tuesday, and he’ll likely be put on paid leave, possibly before the arraignment. The bigger question is whether the Titans will put him on waivers.

Faced with the prospect of paying him not to play, they may simply choose to not pay him to not play. Especially since he hasn’t played as well as the team had hoped in his first two seasons.

Chiefs rookie Justin Cox arrested again on domestic violence charges

Get ready for some more paid leave, unless it becomes permanent unpaid leave first.

According to Michael Bonner of the Jackson Clarion-Ledger, Chiefs rookie safety Justin Cox was arrested Monday on aggravated domestic violence charges, along with burglary of a residence and trespassing.

The Chiefs signed Cox as an undrafted rookie from Mississippi State, which means he’ll be easy enough to make an example of just before camp.

According to the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office, Cox was arrested yesterday afternoon after an incident at an apartment complex. He’s still in custody and bond hasn’t been set, pending an arraignment today.

It’s his second arrest involving domestic violence in eight months, after similar charges last November. He was suspended after that one and didn’t play in the Bulldogs’ final three games. But after running a 4.36-second 40 at the NFL Scouting Combine, the Chiefs gave him a chance to come to camp.

When posting these criminal incidents, I consider that these are mostly young men sometimes not brought up in the best of circumstances and remember when I was that age, I did some incredibly stupid, dangerous, and sometimes criminal things myself. Still, one wonders why some of them gamble away a rare opportunity for fame and fortune by their reckless behavior.

When it comes to murder, rape, and violence to women however, there's no excuse at any age.

Panthers wideout Stephen Hill cited for drug paraphernalia

Oh, coaches around the NFL can’t get their players into training camp fast enough.

According to WSOC in Charlotte, Panthers wide receiver Stephen Hill has been cited for a drug paraphernalia charge during a traffic stop in nearby Concord. The Panthers report to camp tomorrow.

Hill, a former Jets second-rounder, was on the fringes of the Panthers depth chart anyway, and this can’t help. Even in a landscape barren of downfield threats last year, he never made much of an impact.

They’ve said nice things about him through the preseason, but with Kelvin Benjamin’s breakout rookie season and their own second-rounder in Devin Funchess, Hill was going to to struggle to be a factor anyway.

Stuff like this does not help.

Junior Galette cited for driving on suspended license
Posted by Michael David Smith on July 29, 2015

Two weeks before he was cut by the Saints, Junior Galette was involved in yet another off-field issue.

Galette was cited for three misdemeanor traffic violations, including driving on a suspended and expired drivers license, according to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

There’s no indication that the traffic violations played a role in the Saints’ decision to cut him, which was motivated primarily by a domestic violence charge that was later dropped, and the emergence of a tape that appeared to show him hitting a man and a woman with a belt. But the traffic violations will add to a sense around the NFL that Galette is the kind of guy who just can’t stay out of trouble.

It’s that sense around the NFL that may make it hard for Galette to find a new team. Although he’s a very good player on the field, with back-to-back double-digit sack seasons, his frequent off-field issues may make him more trouble than he’s worth.

Report: Sheldon Richardson was arrested on July 14

On July 3, word emerged that Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson would miss the first four games of the 2015 regular season due to violations of the substance-abuse policy. Eleven days later, it didn’t get much better.

Via FOX 2 in St. Louis, Richardson was arrested on July 14 in Missouri for street racing and resisting arrest.

“The vehicles were clocked on radar three times at speeds of 122, 135, and 143 miles per hour,” per the report.

Richardson’s vehicle, a 2014 Bentley Silver Spur, allegedly increased its speed to avoid the police, running through a traffic signal and turning off the lights. The driver then turned into the driveway of a home to avoid detection.

Richardson turned out to be the driver. Two other men and a 12-year-old child was in the car. So was a fully-loaded handgun and the odor of marijuana.

And soon-to-be free agent Muhammad Wilkerson gets even more leverage.

New York Jets defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson was charged Thursday with resisting arrest and various traffic violations stemming from a high-speed, late-night road race on Highway 40 (Interstate 64) on July 14, authorities said.

St. Charles County Prosecutor Tim Lohmar said Richardson, 24, a St. Louis native and former University of Missouri football star, drove a 2014 Bentley Silver Spur clocked by police upwards of 143 mph.

Lohmar said an O’Fallon officer tried to stop Richardson’s westbound car shortly before midnight. Richardson exited at WingHaven Boulevard and sped through a red light.

A 12-year-old male relative and two adult men were passengers in Richardson’s car, authorities said.

According to court records, Richardson drove around stopped vehicles and turned off his lights as he fled the officer. On Phoenix Parkway, Richardson lost control of the Bentley, sliding the rear of the car into an oncoming lane of traffic.

Officers caught up with Richardson after he pulled into the driveway of a home in a nearby neighborhood in the WingHaven development. An officer ordered Richardson and the two adult passengers out at gunpoint because Richardson appeared to be reaching for something. Lohmar said Richardson complied with a police demand to get out. He was issued a summons at the scene, Lohmar said. The officer found a loaded semi-automatic handgun beneath the floor mat on the driver’s side of the Bentley. Lohmar said Richardson had the gun legally.

Lohmar said resisting arrest is a misdemeanor which carries a potential penalty of up to a year in jail and or a $1,000 fine. The others in the car were not charged. Lohmar said the driver of the other vehicle got away.

The court records said the officer smelled “a very strong odor of burned marijuana” from the vehicle and all the passengers. Lohmar said there was no evidence presented on which to base any drug charge
