I was thrilled when the Rams selected Tavon Austin but have to admit that I have been a little bit disappointed in his production since he has been a Ram but I don't think it is all his fault (How many of his long punt returns have been called back due to penalties?). But, with the addition of Cooper I just don't think Austin is a real need on the team anymore and I think his salary could be better used on re-signing other priority free agents! Just curious how much the Rams will save (If, Any) if they release or by some great fortune trade him (Will be very happy and surprised if the Rams can find a trade partner for him due to his salary) during this offseason.

Tavon's stats this year:
13 receptions for 47 yards (3.6 avg), 0 TDs
59 rushes for 270 yards (4.6 avg), 1 TD

From those numbers, he's a backup RB. He doesn't provide much in pass protection, so I don't think he's even a good #2. He's actually a change of pace #3 behind Brown.

I would cut him even if they didn't save anything against the cap. Davis or a late draft pick would be a better option, and Pharoh Cooper can take over the ghost motion plays.

:welcome: aboard Happy New Year ! Nice to to have you here to add to the extra large Florida contingent that we have @ ROD. Not sure but outside of Kalifornia contingent Florida might be the 2nd most. TA has been for some time a hot topic in this forum. With a large wide variety of opinions on the present & future worth to this Ram team. You can go to the ROD search & place Tavon Austin name in & click ...an a boatload of threads will come up with some real great comments:boxing::rant::puke: :argue::death::palm::seizure::fighting:on TA. So Enjoy!

I am far from being a little disappointed but more in the area of BIG disappointment. My prefer resolution to the TA issue is for Snead/McVay to utilize him in a 2018 Draft day trade in anyway possible. That we we can disperse his cap hit pre June 1st. The Rams still owe TA over 36 million if he remains here. If we trade him we would save over 8 million right off the bat. (We have a member here who is a math genius.. @flv who could give us a detailed :headexplosion: amount of information on this part if you PM him) I want to get some positive additional value from him in the trade for a move up or additional selections from the more wealthy teams in cap space or the wealthier teams in draft picks i.e. Cleveland Browns or SF 9ers.

If they cut him we still owe TA millions not what we want. Problem is TA has shown that he is only special as a change of pace trick play gadget player who works well enough in the NFL's most powerful offense behind a a very effective OL. Most NFL teams are not close to this.:D

Once again welcome!

Pretty fair statement.
He's taking a spot after contributing very little this year. There is literally nothing he can do for us as well as Pharoh Cooper. I'd much rather have a real good LBer taking that spot...or Olineman.

Just as bad as the G-Rob pick IMO.....and

G-Rob is a better OL'er than Tavon is as a wr....as a RB, Tavon is better

Welcome aboard SeminoleRam. Tavon has been a big topic of discussion here.

This a much different Rams team than last year. I though McVay would use him more in the passing game. As you can see that hasn't happened. I thought it would be worth the 3 Million to keep him. Rams have more weapons on offense now. His 4.6 YPC average is solid. I'm not sure they can replace the threat of Austin with Cooper. In the end they will replace him. I don't think that will be easy unless you invest a draft pick. Those fake jet sweeps really help the run game. They have tried UDFA with no luck.

He wont be an attractive proposition to anyone... a 170 lb running back? a PR that can't catch punts? A 5'8 wr that can't catch the ball 5 yards down the field?

He might make a team.. might.

If Tavon is removed, he will be essentially replaced by committee. We don't need Tavon as a downfield threat because we have fast thoroughbred in Sammy, with Josh Reynolds and Mike Thomas as solid backups. Josh lacks the flat out speed of the other two, but his ability to adjust to the ball and his willingness to suck it up for big hits are pure gold.

Tavon has that super electric speed & quicks, yes, much more so than anyone else on the team, including Pharoh. However, Pharoh is super efficient at navigating his way north, never wasting an unnecessary backwards, diagonal, or sideways cut before reorienting his personal compass north towards pay dirt.

The jet sweeps are very effective and, when the scenario is right, can be downright lethal. However, Sean has displayed his willingness to run sweeps with Robert Woods, Sammy Watkins, and even Gerald Everett. Pharoh's super efficient open field running can be put to use here as well. Plus, he is physically stronger than Tavon, allowing him to run through many one arm tackle attempts.

To say Tavon is a backup behind Malcom Brown isn’t accurate.

Tavon is a starter in a lot of formations. His jet sweep threat moves the defense for Gurley to have more open space. Tavon also averages 4.6 on those runs where he gets the ball. That is a high average and impacts the game.

Could Pharoah Cooper fill the Tavon role? Possibly.

Dude is overpaid. But he’s much more
Than a backup RB in our offense in his impact on the game.

I don't think they have been effective as Tavon. I wish we had seen more of Cooper running the jet sweeps.

We don't know if Watkins is coming back. Even if he does I feel the Rams need a speed guy. It should be a RB/ WR type. Dunbar didn't work out and Brown doesn't have the speed. Rams need that change of pace speed guy like Austin but, has more meat on the bones and can catch the ball.

.

that dropped pass by tavon yesterday confirmed the reason mcvay doesn't have goff throwing the ball to him when he actually does run a route.

i had high hopes for tavon this year. thought mcvay would get the best out of him. seems i was wrong. if an offensive mind like mcvay can't get tavon going as a wr there can only be one conclusion.

tavon's best asset is helping gurley get space in the running game. he also provides good relief in the running game. that's about it.

i'm not sure saving just over $2m is worth getting rid of him, seeing how gurley benefits from him being on the field.
