say Jalen Ramsey, Rams needed to clear salary to sign the best CB in the league
train
Yes, of course, getting cap flexibility in order to sign Ramsey was the reason for the trade. All in all, the Rams must have thought the benefit (able to sign Ramsey... sooner?) outweighed the cost (losing Talib for rest of 2019 and playoffs).

All I’m sayin is, I’m kinda surprised that the Rams were willing to part with Talib for “only” 4.2 M in savings. In 2018, one could argue that Talib was the second most valuable player (behind AD) on our defense. The Rams’ pass D was crazy better when Talib was in there compared to when he was out. And, Talib was SOLID in playoffs and the SB.

If Talib’s play in 2019 was comparable to 2018, I don’t think they would have traded him away— they would have found some other way to massage the cap and find $ for Ramsey. But apparently, Rams must’ve felt that Talib’s play deteriorated to the point that they were better off dumping his salary.

Talib &Peter were tight .The Rams just needed to cut ties. Hill was ready to step up. Long is going to the man sometime soon with Ramsey ? It Was more than a contract issue is my guess ??

Mcvay keeps everything in house,we not me. Talib gets it. Was a good veteran for Peters, but something went down & Ramsey was perfect way to move forward for the future.
The Rams now are sured up at CB for the next 3 plus seasons.Pleasant & Weedle really add to the DB core.
Coleman,Woods, & Clay are excellent USC guys that hold a core pillar for The Rams at the coliseum.

Rams were going to be forced into drafting several corners next season if the corner trades did not take place. Snead was fully aware they were not going to sign either CB (Talib or Peters). So they moved fast before the deadline refurbish their corner cadre instead.

The OL unexpectedly went into the tank. Numerous miscalculations took place in this unit plus some bad luck. Bottom line was the OL was going to retard the offense for the rest of the season & there was very little the Rams Org could do this season to improve.

Defensively it was a total different situation. Wade's defense was not functioning much better than the offense for various reasons however there some moves available out there to be made that might help the defense improve.

Wade's #1 desire was a dominant one on one outside corner. Snead drafted a CB in the 3rd rd David Long. The type of physical press-man style that Wade prefers on the outside. But the youngest player (21) on his defense has been very slow getting up to NFL speed & was not close to being ready.

Ramsey is a young all pro corner that can make Wade's defense win many games for the Rams this remaining season. The 2019 versions of Talib & Peters did none of that. Rams need millions to assist them in extending Ramsey. IMO the next veteran CB to be released early is Robey-Coleman. His 2019 play is trending downward & fast the last 2 gms against weak teams. Snead can add another $4.5 million back into the salary cap bank. Wade had been utilizing 3 safeties much more than 3 corners this season anyway. So the big need of NRC has somewhat diminished.

I expect Darious Williams (a Ram CB under low cost contract until 2022) to push NRC out & take over the Nickel position. Leaving David Long & Donte Deayon as the Rams #4 & #5 corners. Now Snead only needs to draft 1 outside corner in the 2020 draft.

Now this defense is equipt to be very special over the last half of the season & balance the weakness in the OL.

Aqib Talib disagreed with Rams putting him on IR, shares thoughts on trade

The Los Angeles Rams made major changes to their secondary before the trade deadline swapping out two former starters at cornerback for one new one. They traded away Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib and acquired Jalen Ramsey, pairing him with Troy Hill as the two starters at corner.

Talib was on injured reserve with broken ribs, so he wasn’t eligible to return until Week 15 anyway, but Peters was healthy and playing well before the trade. Although the moves came as somewhat of a surprise, Talib wasn’t caught off guard by the Rams trading him the Dolphins.

He was on FOX’s pregame show Sunday and explained what led to the trade – beginning with being placed on IR, which he disagreed with.

“I was in the building, so I kind of saw the whole thing formulating itself, so not as much of a surprise. I kind of seen the whole story unfolding in front of me,” Talib said.

“It kind of started with the Seattle game, I broke my ribs. So early-week meetings, they said the team said they were going to put me on IR. I kind of disagreed with the IR, [but] it was the team’s decision at the end of the day,” he continued.” My call with my agent, I wasn’t the happiest camper, so the trade rumors came upon us and some contenders were out there. but I initially decided to stay. I wanted to stay with the guys I was grinding with – my team, the L.A. Rams. My kids got friends at school and stuff, so I ultimately decided I wanted to stay in L.A.”

What events led to the Rams trading away @AqibTalib21?

Talib wasn’t surprised by the Rams’ decision to trade him, especially after he learned what was going on. He saw Peters get traded and Ramsey come to L.A., so the writing was on the wall for him.

“You get a guy like Jalen Ramsey, you can’t let that guy leave the building. He’s one of the hottest commodities in the NFL,” Talib said. “I talked to Les [Snead], Coach Sean [McVay] – I wouldn’t have done it no different, honestly. You got one of the hottest commodities in the league in Jalen Ramsey. You got a chance to go out and get him and pay him while he’s happy, he’s in the building, do it.”

As for whether Talib will actually play again this season for the Dolphins, that remains to be seen. He’s healthy right now, but he can’t come off IR until Week 15 at the earliest – and it sounds like when he can come off IR, he may not play anyway.

“I’m healthy enough to play right now. I talked to Coach Flo [Brian Flores] and right now, I’m just focused on getting healthy,” Talib said when asked if he’ll play for the Dolphins this year. “When I’m able to come off the injured reserve list, it’ll be a decision to make for the team, for myself. But ultimately, I don’t make any decisions, as you can see. I just show up and make sure I’m healthy enough to play football.

Talib had lost a step and joined Peters in being the primary reasons for us switching to so much zone coverage IMO.

This board has a terrible issue with group think and ganged up on Troy Hill last year - it's ironic because he played well in 2017 while Kayvon Webster was out, and has played well this year.

Both Ramsay and Hill are better than both Talib and Peters at doing what Wade wants them to do.

Talib showed both intelligence and class with his explanation and reaction to the trade and being put on IR. We will never know when he could play at his best had he not been put on IR.

Looks like the Rams bailed on Peters and Talib at the right time. Getting cap money for Talib helps some with upcoming contracts. I thought the trade for Ramsey would create more future cap problems. I see it could work out to keep the Rams competitive for a few more years. They are a better team today than before the trade.

Started against those but Hill has played every week and considerable stats. And yes I never claimed it was the end all be all hence why I led with FWIW. But that tackle % isn't misleading and the fact that Wade is comfortable starting him isn't misleading either.

Right on - Hill sure as hell isn't scared of contact. I am sure Wade loves having two CB's that aren't afraid to tackle.

With that said, I would not be surprised, even a little, if Talib ends up back here and a on team friendly deal.

We absolutely do NOT have a problem with group think on this board, and on behalf of the guys, I resemble that remark.

Assuming that Long is ready to go next year, isn't it possible that Hill could be our starting slot corner?

I thought Williams was a little faster at the 40 yard dash? I think he could be the first man up at corner just like Hill was this year.

Sorry for the scattered thoughts, but I'm at least hopeful that the Rams have a more consistent option than Robey-Coleman at slot next year.

I guess you figure Long is the backup they hope they don't have to go to this year.

Troy Hill is already signed for 2020. I see no reason for Troy to start trending downward in his play. Fact is he will be heading for UFA'cy in 2021 starting corners on winning teams even just average starters can earn a sizable payday. Thus, it's in his better interest to be paired with Ramsey. Troy will certainly get a ton of balls thrown in his direction because of Ramsey no fly zone, so he will get a lot of attention & praise if he fares as well as he has thus far.

Youngster Young has to get a lot better to be in contention for a starting post opposite Ramsey IMO. Long could get a good amount of looks @ the Nickle along with Darious Williams & Donte Deayon. Troy Hill is in the driver seat for a starting post next season.

Agree with all. I expect Long to see some time inside and outside, but he's got a way to go surplant Hill as the starter.

If Troy Hill can continue to play as he has thud far for us we will be fine with our corner unit.

Of course that's just from watching this rookie play in four preseason games. He has been in for a few defensive snaps too. Sadly I was highly disappointed in his overall performance even though it was coming from a rookie.

In the last preseason game he played a lot of snaps in the Nickel & he stunk at it. Fact is I do not recall any good plays from him @ all. You can say it from a rookie but it was a second day draft selection that brought him here bigger investment than lets say UDFA 2nd season Kevin Peterson who outplayed David Long all preseason & was cut.
