Tried to post the article too. May have been to lengthy. We may be seeing the end of “amateur“ sports as we know it. IMO it’s beaded solely off the greed of the NCAA and Universities.

Be interesting to see how the universities react to this. Amateur sports was already barely a thing with big ticket schools already paying their athletes in some form or fashion under the table. Maybe not to the extremes that this will open up but it's out there.

The first thing that comes to me to counter this is schools start offering scholarships that can be recouped from the athlete if they receive funds due to their athletic career at the school. That seems reasonable... they want paid they should have to pay for their education as well. Course that could open up a cluster F in transfers or other under the table dealings. NCAA could create rules to govern that. If an athlete takes an endorsement they have to refund money given by the school in scholarships or other fees and if they choose to make money off their college career they aren't allowed to transfer and play collegiately at another school without still paying back money owed to the other school.

I don't know, it's good for the kids. But greed will take over somewhere. More real estate for shady sports agents to take advantage of kids and parents who don't know any better. I won't shed a tear over the NCAA though.

NCAA has been a farce for a long time as is anyway. I'm not sure how this really changes anything as the big names in college football will still dominate year in and year out except now boosters who were paying kids under the table will now use their businesses to give huge sponsorship deals to come play at their alma mater.

One thing that might be interesting is whether some of the bigger stars in college actually decide to stay for 4 years now. If you're the top QB in NCAA and you can earn $10 million in endorsements by simply staying for your senior season they might be more inclined to stay.

Idk, it does open the flood gates though. Will be intriguing what kind of crazy endorsements some kids get now.

Let's be honest the NCAA is a legal mob, with Football mostly and Basketball only at successful programs paying for 90% of all other activities and sports.

The only reason most of these universities have the other sports is because the NCAA rules state a certain percentage has to be spent elsewhere from the main bread earner. So if these universities want all that big money they have to fund badminton, soccer, swimming etc etc

You only have to look back at 2020 to see what's going to happen. Colleges will cut out sports that arent "profitable", like Clemson dropping track, Stanford dropping volleyball etc

Isn't it amazing how all this cash just appeared in 24 hours after the decision. The QB from Alabama is an instant Millionaire and he threw for a few hundred yards last year in spot appearances. My son doesn't play sports or will likely get an academic scholarship in two years, so I hope tuition drops drastically by then so we can afford a 4 year in state University.

Yeah this topic makes me feel old tbh.

On one hand I don't think it's right for a player to be running around campus hungry when he's generating income for the university.

But on the other hand these guys are getting a free education, which is enormously valuable.

I think there's still going to be guys going hungry, the non-stars and non-elite position types that make up a lot of the rosters, while the QBs and big time players get a windfall. What I would have liked to see is an approach that pools the advertisement money and spreads it among the athletes at least a little at each uni. But whatever.

Quinn Ewers has only been on Ohio State’s campus for a few weeks, but he’s already cashing in on NIL deals.
According to multiple outlets, Ewers has signed a deal with GT Sports Marketing worth $1.4 million. GTSM specializes in autographs for athletes, and the deal with Ewers reportedly spans three seasons. Ewers is a freshman for the Buckeyes who enrolled at school earlier this month.
Ewers was the No. 1 recruit in the class of 2022, but he decided to bypass his senior season and enroll a full year early at Ohio State in order to capitalize on the marketing opportunities ahead of him.
As reported on by Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel, Ewers’ home state of Texas does not allow high school athletes to profit from the use of their name, image and likeness as part of its state NIL law. That caused Ewers, a star quarterback from Southlake Carroll High School in suburban Dallas, to leave the state and head to Ohio to a headstart on his college career — and put some endorsement money in his pockets.
When Ewers was still deciding whether or not to leave high school early, Thamel reported that Ewers had a cash and equity deal on the table from a local kombucha company with “several other offers” also there for the taking. The Holy Kombucha deal has already been announced, as has a deal with a Columbus, Ohio-based car company.

Now Ewers will be able to cash in on the autograph circuit even while he sits on the sidelines for the Buckeyes. C.J. Stroud won Ohio State’s starting quarterback job. Two other acclaimed recruits, Kyle McCord and Jack Miller, are also on the roster for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State coach Ryan Day said earlier this month that Ewers has a long way to go in order to see the field. While Ewers just arrived in Columbus this month, Stroud and Miller are in their second season with the program. McCord, a 2021 recruit, enrolled early and participated in spring practice, as well as preseason camp.
The Buckeyes open the 2021 season on the road against Minnesota on Thursday night.

I know a lot of kids who did some college courses in high school if they had completed all of their high school requirements and were looking to get ahead. If that's what's going on here I don't have an issue, but I'm not sold (at face value) the idea of a high school athlete being that kid.

Teaching athletes at UCLA my experience was most of them good kids, a lot of them (especially the male athletes) were assigned tutors that basically would cheat for them while the university looked the other way.

Strange they're giving this kid that kind of deal when he's going to be riding the bench.

Nah I was an 80s kid and a 90s teenager and while I had some bad haircuts in my life it was never like this....
