Jackson better than Gurley? OK. That's reasonable.

However, do you think he was 'fifteen time better' than Gurley?

THAT's the comment a few of us are pushing-back against.

Steven Jackson was maybe fifteen times better than June Henley ... maybe.
Where did I say “fifteen times better”

As I view it, splitting hairs between ED, MF, SJ & TG are fractional imo, they were all Alpha Dog premier Tailbacks

Gurley never ran behind shit offensive lines like what Jackson had. Gurley never had eight consecutive 1,000 yard+ seasons like Jackson did. Jackson may not have been a top ten pick like Gurley was, but in his prime, he was big, had breakaway speed, was impossible to tackle once he got going, and yes, he never got injured like Gurley did. Even when Jackson was injured (Eagles game when Nnamdi Asomugha tackled him after a long touchdown run on the first offensive play, if I recall correctly), he came back when it mattered and still got his 1,000 yards.

And let's not forget his character. Steven Jackson was the absolute heart of the Rams. He never bitched about anything team-related, never sulked about his coache), even when they were absolute shit like Linehan and Spagnuolo. He gave everything and more for a team that flat-out sucked when he played with us.

Gurley sulked, threw Fisher under the bus, played games with McVay, and tapped out of games on specific downs where we needed him. Yes, I loved TG30 when he played for us, but the guy was not a team player around the end of his tenure here.

And yes, I'd go with prime Jackson - a prime Jackson that had nearly 2,500 yards from scrimmage in 2006, his absolute pinnacle - over prime Gurley.
Respectfully, Jackson was hurt all the time. Dude would start games and not finish them constantly. It doesn't show up when you look back at stat lines because it says 16 or 15 games started, but he'd be out of the game by halftime. Look at the carries per season. There's seasons he played 16 or 15 games and had 330 plus carries. Then there's seasons he played 11 or 12 seasons and was in the low 200s. Then there's seasons with 16 or 15 games where he's in the mid 200s. Why? He was injured and leaving games, starting the next week, but out at half time. Then he'd start the next week and be out at half time. He had a lot of yards. Good for him. I was going to talk about the quality of the offense around him, but I didn't realize how many years he played with Bruce and Holt. Arguments could be made, but they're highly subjective and not worth it. And I'd be making them only to try to be right, not because I believed them.

He was big, he was fast, he was determined as fuck. 15 times better than Gurley? Idk. Take that back. No he wasn't 15 times better than Gurley. He didn't blow his knee out and lose the ability to cut, so good for him. Let's also not forget that Jackson, before the Rams brought in Stephen Davis, had a terrible habit of dancing for 3 yard losses. It was either lose 3 yard or gain 10 plus. Davis had to teach him how to run behind his pads. That's when he finally figured out how to use all that damn size.

I don't dislike Jackson, but he wasn't some kind of all world super running back. He sure as hell isn't #2 behind Eric Dickerson (not your claim).

Gurley has 67 career (6 years) rushing TDs (not deep driving to find only Rams) and 12 receiving. Compared to 69 and 9 for Jackson, who did 8 years with just the Rams, with his untackleable (made up a word) build and breakaway speed. Terrible, inept, and mostly irrelevant comparison, but it's still there.

I prefer backs like Jackson. Big, bruising, bone crushers who grind out yards. Get two of them so that when the defense is tired you can throw in a fresh guy to run all over the bastards with another huge ass dude.

He was the heart and soul of many really bad teams. If I was building an offense, I'd pick him over Gurley because of my preferred style (I still think we should convert Evans to RB; can't play guard? Go get 3 yard then). But I'm not buying that he was wholesale better than prime Gurley or that if he was it was much more than "a little". 1.2x tops if at all.

SJ >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> TG

Idk if there is even an argument to really be made at this point. I mean....Mike Rumph's arm bruh......Mike Rumph's arm. It was straight liquified by SJ's thigh. INSANE. Ya'll remember?

You did not.

Memento did.

You jumped in on an exchange a few of us were having with him about his 'fifteen times better' comment.

I was trying to see if you were agreeing with that comment, since your response quoting Memento was his response defending that comment.

Thanks for posting. Sometimes I forget how amazing that guy was. What a freak combo of size, power, speed and agility.

Can we sign him this year for a 3rd down and goal line back? Not sure if I want to put blue font or not, haha.

Well perhaps I’m guilty of not reading the lady’s comment before the one I responded to

Guilty, of wanton ignorance...damn I hate when that happens!

.

32 out of 32 teams would pick gurley if both were in their primes.

.
No. Jackson was a more diverse player. For a big man he had great hands. Jackson was also a true team player.

The Rams were horrible and all he did was put the team on his shoulders week in and week out. I remember one game he single handedly beat an excellent Niner team, running over Willis and Bowman for a first down. He had a lion's heart. The new generation doesn't know guys like SJ39.

SJ over everybody not named Peterson, Faulk, or Tomlinson. (Honorable mention Frank Gore. He's a stud.)

Gurley broke down way too soon to be compared to Jackson anyway.

Gurley was an elite RB. He was a better goaline back and had world class speed both of which Jackson didn’t possess. Gurley has been clocked sub 4.3 whereas Jackson was more of a 4.5 guy.

Gurleys TD numbers are far superior for this reason. In 6 years he had 10 TD or more on the ground 4 times. Jackson did this once in 11 years.

Gurleys 21 and 19 total TD years trump Jackson best of 16. This is why Gurley was the offensive player of the year and considered a top 10 player in the NFL. Jackson never received such accolades.

Jacksons main issue was his skinny legs. He could get tripped up rather easily and couldn’t churn out the tough yards at the goaline.

But Jackson was a better locker room guy and teammate. He also played much longer, whereas the dead money of Gurley really strapped the team. Gurley also sucked in the NFC championship and was nearly useless in the Super Bowl.

Also Jackson played with more heart, there is no debating that.

Jackson was as much of a lateral back as he was verticle. He was surprising elusive for his size. He could also stop and start.

Gurley was more of a one cut runner. However, that one cut was special and yes he could fly. He had no trouble running through you either.

In in end I side with the lion's heart. Jackson didn't just run over you, he fought you. He was a violent runner. The whole team fed off it. He was Beast Mode before Beast Mode. That's what made him special.

PEAK off-season when we're debating Gurley vs Jackson. The season can't start soon enough. I'm ready for the GameDay threads criticizing every call McVay and Morris make. BRING IT!

TradeSJ39 that was my icon.

He had such an excellent season Linehan. Amazing with the team
that was not all that good.
Gurley was & is Gurley.

Trading SJ39 to Dallas for 2 first rounds picks or sign & draft Jay Cutler.
JZ & Shaw bought into Marc Bulger.

Funny thing was The Rams-always paid players.Salary cap was a thing.

Greg Bell was a nice RB.

Jackson deserves his place in Rams top 4 running backs:
Dickerson, Faulk, Gurley, Jackson.
Dickerson v Faulk has been debated, as has Gurley v Jackson.
We 've been blessed here. Some have been short-lived.
As a kid who became as Rams fan in 1987, I was saddened to see ED leave for the Colts the same season.
Decades later, my new-favourite Ram, Gurley, suddenly decline.
Faulk gave us the Super Bowl.
Jackson seemed like the bruiser, the leader, that you are glad he's on your team.
I thought he was a great player for the Rams, and I don't like to throw the term "great" around often.

I remember SJ having plenty of speed!

The above Jackson Gif is 20 yards out. He had plenty of speed yes. But not world class speed.

Try to find a video of Jackson taking it 80 yards to the house like we saw with Gurley on the screen vs the Titans for example when Gurley reached 21.23 MPH, which was the fastest on the year and beat Adoree Jackson who ran a 4.39 at the combine.
