(CNN) -- The discovery of horse DNA in hamburgers on sale at supermarkets in Ireland and Britain is testing the appetite of meat lovers there.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland said Tuesday that 10 out of 27 hamburger products it analyzed in a study were found to contain horse DNA, and 23 of them tested positive for pig DNA.

The horse-tainted burgers, on sale at several different supermarket chains, came from two meat processing plants in Ireland and one in Britain, the Irish authority said.

"This raises concerns in relation to the traceability of meat ingredients and products entering the food chain," it said, but noted that the findings posed no risk to public health.

In nine out of the 10 burger samples, the horse DNA was found at very low levels, the authority said, but in one sample from Tesco, Britain's largest retailer, the horsemeat accounted for about 29% of the burger.

Tesco responded by pulling from its shelves all products from the company that had supplied the dubious burgers.

"We understand that many of our customers will be concerned by this news, and we apologize sincerely for any distress," Tesco said.
The retailer is working with Irish and British authorities and the supplier to work out what had happened, it said.

Alan Reilly, the chief executive of the Irish food authority, said there was a "plausible explanation" for the pig meat finding its way into the burgers, since meat from different animals is processed at the same plants. But he said there was "no clear explanation at this time" for the presence of the horsemeat.

"In Ireland, it is not in our culture to eat horsemeat and therefore, we do not expect to find it in a burger," Reilly said. "Likewise, for some religious groups or people who abstain from eating pig meat, the presence of traces of pig DNA is unacceptable."

Many British and Irish people expressed their distaste over the revelations on social media.

Some Twitter users said they weren't surprised to hear about the questionable origins of the burgers, while others debated the ethics of eating horsemeat.

And then there were those who saw an opportunity for attempts at humor.

"Going to #tesco and expecting a beef burger. Instead you get #horsemeat . Sounds to me like foal-play," wrote Twitter user Matt Oswin under the username @BrushmanLestar.

Are all the horses 100% horse-fed for that double-horse juiced-in goodness?

And I don't want a horse Pepsi.

Can't be any worse than a Buffalo-hamburger.

But then again, I dunno. I don't eat those either.

That is totally messed up. There could be no explanation why 29% of a hamburger has forced DNA in it.

I had a Buff burger at Ted Turner's place in Atlanta once and it was good. Horse? Seems it would be a little tough!

Yeah, buffalo/bison burgers are great. Elk burgers are great as well. Fudrucker's is one of the best when it comes to that.

Couldn't imagine eating horse-meat, though.

Yea, agreed. Big fan of all three. Also enjoy eating moose(not in burger form). It's a bit gamey though. Alligator is excellent too but I don't make a burger out of that.

I had them at Ted's place in Peachtree City (basically ATL) where my parents live on several occasions. Is that the same one you went to Bo ?

They are really tasty.

One of my wife's best friends is married to a dude from France. He eats some disgusting shit,,, horse meat being one thing that I've heard him rave about,,, so it must be readily available over in Europe.

Probably the same place. It was TED'S MONTANA GRILL on Peachtree Blvd or Ave. They run parallel to each other and I get them mixed up. It is a just a few blocks from CNN Plaza, World of Coke, and the Georgia Aquarium. Regardless, about the biggest burger I've ever eaten and as I said pretty good. The meat is much leaner and has an almost sweet tint to it. I'd eat there again.

You were in the actual city of Atlanta then... Peachtree City is just west of the airport.

Ted's doing well with these restaurants ... lots of great food, especially the buffalo burger. The one I go to is ALWAYS packed too.

They need to do a foal review. Someone call the con-stable! I think they need to do a new stud-y to ass-ertain the origins of the mane source of this meat. I realize it could be diffi-colt but when you are talking about more than just a quarter-horse.... What a night mare. And I wouldn't accept any stall tactics either. I'm sure the evidence has already been haltered.

Sure would take your de-sire away from ordering a philly cheese steak when across the pond. Think it makes the meat taste livery?

Did these guy honestly think they could get away with it furlong? At minimum someone needs to be fired for gross nag-ligence to protect the futurity of English beef. I canter even understand what these guys were thinking. People already have a neigh-gative impression of British food. This REALLY has to stirrup some bad press.

The problem with this sort of deal is that no one whinnies. :beating:
