Sources: The Rams blocked OC Kevin O'Connell from interviewing for the same job with the Chargers. They really value O'Connell, and the job he did for them this year.

Right on Coach!! Rumor was he was gone.Having a New OC 5 years in a row & 6(7) for Goff would really suck.I know Mcvay has been in control of being the OC during games.
How or what is your opinion on a new DC?

& Thanks coach

Barry turned down the opportunity to be DC at USC and returned to the Rams as Assistant Head Coach/Inside Linebackers.

Okay- I knew that much, not trying to be an AZZ. He did get the Assitant HC position which comes with a($$$)higher pay ?? I guess that is my question & point(understanding) of his contract coming back as LBer coach again while Staley was signed to the DC position.

Another question after looking at other post with AlbertBeer goggles.
Is assistant coach a thing then? I thought that was what brought Joe Barry back to The Rams just don’t understand this new rule rumor or thing then.I’m sort of out of the loop & just like to see things playout.Never thought Staley would or was going to get a HC job this season.
Maybe Staley knowing he had a HC job lined up was why his Defensive Rotation seemed messed up.I guess I thought A”Robinson should have played more & not a Hollins58 fan.

It's about time, teams got around by attaching supervisor tags adding coaches, they won't be able to get around this, although you might see more Co-Offensive/Defensive Coordinators around the league.
I think it will be pretty cut and dry, OC or DC, if they try to circumnavigate with assistant coordinator titles, they'll have to put a kabosh on it. There really are 3 positions, Head coach, O and D Coord, and assistants. But who knows, running game coordinator, passing game coordinator? I dont really care.
In fact if this move opens up more opportunity for minorities, then they can add as many titles to the list as they see fit

I have to respectfully disagree. His scheme was impressive, as were his adjustments. Sometimes, the opposition is better. There's only so much you can do. Ultimately, players have to execute. He forced Green Bay to win using long, methodical drives. Our gamble was that they'd make a mistake.

The few times they made the mistakes, we either didn't execute or the ball didn't bounce our way. Our DBs dropped back to back picks in the end zone. We forced a fumble that bounced straight to Rodgers. Our defenders whiffed on multiple sack opportunities on Rodgers.

Simply put, without Donald anywhere near himself, it was going to be tough to stop the #1 offense. But it becomes that much harder when your guys don't execute. I watched him adjust to try and better stop the run in the second half. What happened? Green Bay started using play action to try and torch us deep. Rodgers missed a TD, Lazard dropped a TD, and then Lazard torched Hill for a TD.

The Packers were simply better on that day. We couldn't consistently stop the run with a light box like we have in the past, and when we started putting more players in the box, our CBs started to get beaten deep without their normal help.

I think we all remember Fangio and Belichick making McVay look the fool. Well, Staley got a taste of that from LaFleur. That's football. You can't win them all. IMO, the guy is still a genius, and I think he's going to be a good HC. I hope McVay has another Staley ready to go next year.
Nice post and good summation of things. I think the Rams need to be better too on offense to win a game like that. Our players couldn't quite get it done.

Fired?? Either way is he was fired or not The Rams still had a DC position open.I guess I’m missing the point?Your only talking about Coaches from other Organizations?
Yeah after he was fired from the Redskins he was brought in and wasn’t a thought for the DC because they had their sights on Wade.
Then after they fired Wade, he still wasn’t a thought for DC. He was free to go to USC but decided to stay. Now the DC is open again and......
He still isn’t a thought....
I thought the point was giving fancy titles in order to retain coaches. Looks like with Barry he’s free to go but decides to stay

Untrue. No coach is a genius without players.
Boom
Baltimore Ravens had the premier defense for over a decade, and yet had 5 different DC in an 8 year period. Nolan, Ryan, Mattison, Pagano and Pees. Some real good coaches, however having Ray Lewis in the middle and Ed Reed deep sure made them smarter

I dont think that merely changing the titles helps retaining coaches on teams. I mean sure, a DB coach to DC is a legit promotion, but adding Asst Head Coach while doing same thing? Dont think that makes a difference. Just my .02.

Actually, over the last few years, that's been a move to either retain a coordinator or poach one. The Asst HC title makes it a promotion and coordinators can go for promotions.

They dont need to change a title to pay someone more, they can pay what they want to pay. It comes down to opportunity, if the opportunity elsewhere gives a better chance of career advancement, you take it.

It has to do with whether it's considered a promotion by the league and has nothing to do with pay.

Promotion specifically for coordinators are handled in a specific way as opposed to lateral moves. We blocked O'Connell because it was a lateral move and he's under contract.

If SD wanted to make O'Connell the OC AND the Asst. HC, then as a promotion, I'm pretty sure the Rams would have to let him go, although I'm fuzzy on the specifics.

Yes and what is also important is that we blocked that move because McVay likes what he did last year enough to keep him on. Which I wasn't too sure of a few days ago, what with how angry you know he is about his offense.

Now I'm keeping an eye on Waldron lol. If his offensive staff survives this offseason unscathed I will be surprised.

No, they changed the rule to allow assistants the opportunity to pursue coordinator jobs without needing permission . The "assistant" title was deemed a non promotion years ago when they went to the 2 tier system, head coach and assistants.
"Teams can no longer block position coaches from coordinator interviews, Jim Trotter of NFL.com tweets. Previously, teams could nix assistants’ opportunities to become coordinators. The NFL confirmed the new rule applies only to interviews for “bona fide” OC/DC positions, meaning the opportunity must include play-calling responsibilities."

As far as Joe Barry & the Team of Washington I can’t recall what happened there. They have been a mess.I think Ron Rivera had an amazing season in 2020 & maybe even coach of the year?

Let’s set the record straight.

1.Kevin Demoff was in control of hiring & FIRED Jeff Fisher.Fisher had just signed a Under the Table 2 year contract.ED#29 was the one who called Fisher out about LIEING to RAM FANS about something.
2.Bones took over because RAM FANS meant more to The RAMS Organization.Les Snead was caught in the middle of a Rock & a Hard Place.I don’t know what his contract was like, but my guess was Demoff hired Les Snead under Jeff Fishers approval?Meaning he was basically still a Kevin Demoff guy?
3.Ram Fans took over The LA Colosseum, because if you look at The LA RAM FANS they are different.I’m a RAMS FAN.When they moved to The OC you had a choice of LA or The Rams.
—The saying Who’s House came Across at some point!! I just know it’s a thing & not sure how it came about? My thinking is that is when it started?I can’t tell you,but in TRANING CAMP at UCI it became a thing there when Mcvay took over & after all that.
4.Kevin Demoff was in charge of hiring The HC along with Les Snead.Stan Kronke was involved as well.
5. Kevin Demoff on Mcvay made sure Wade was a packaged deal.He wanted a HC with experience for the young coach.Mcvay was good friends with Wes Philips. The connection.
6.Joe Barry-was the DC at Washington, before taking over Lb assistant coaches job.YOUR RIGHT about assistant coach & LBers coach.
JOE means a lot to The RAMS!
7.Wade Phillips was NOT FIRED!
8.Staley was hired.Just took Chargers HC spot.Excellent choice by Sean Mcvay taking over as HC & traning wheels.
9.Raheem Morris is The Rams New DC 2021-Perfect Choice of experience & A BLACK MAN!! Great BLACK D-STAFF!

COMP PICK?

About Washington? Fighting cancer & making the Playoffs? They played Tampa tough for not having a QB.Maybe I’m way off base, but I look at Carolina & New England as well.I guess that circle is where I draw my conclusion. Just an opinion.

The Rams & Demoff building The Rams is right on base.I’ve been around enough to have seen certain things.I never made it to St. Louis & that was because I didn’t want to go myself. The times I would’ve the teams would always disappoint.

Did see Sam Bradford play in Caddlestick his rookie season.A quick center snap on a 3rd down is such a simple play call that any PopWarner Football team should have with just a Hand or Word sign along with a count.

Sorry I go on crazy rants.

Barry did good at at several teams as lb coach, became DC at Detroit and Washington and was not quite up to snuff and was fired at WA.During his time at WA, McKay and Barry formed at good relationship together based on mutual respect, because of his regard for his football IQ, asst head coach Was added.
