That's an entirely different point.

My point is that the praise of Shelton is not a bad thing on any level, and certainly does not mean that Bruss won't live up to expectations.

Bruss not winning the job isn't a good thing.

There's an investment and an expectation. There is the raw talent and size that Shelton just doesn't have.

Now.. here's the thing... we're only a couple of weeks into training camp and A LOT can change, so there's no need for anyone to overreact.

Sorry, I thought I was answering your question. And I do agree with your second sentence.

I wouldn’t overreact if it took Bruss a year to ascend to the starting lineup. Some players (Allen, for example) need to understudy before they’re ready.

I agree, though, that there is still plenty of time for Bruss to win the job before opening day.

Agreed.. it wouldn’t mean too much, big picture, if Bruss took a year.

I just worry about being undersized at right guard. I don’t think that’s a recipe for success.

I bet Bruss is starting by week 5 or 6. Not uncommon for McVay to start off with more experience until a kid is ready, especially at a position where a screw up could kill your season.

Like that time when Billy Bob missed that block (probably due to a prior unreported concussion) and Lance Harbor was lost for the season? (Of course, the season was salvaged, but that was a big loss nonetheless!)

I bet that Bruss gets the JJ3/Ernest Jones/David Edwards treatment; he'll back up Shelton for right guard until he's ready to take the role permanently.

I see no issues in Shelton getting the job at first; he's proved that he's a rock-solid interior lineman, even though he may be small.

I will say the general sentiment that Shelton is ahead of Bruss seems to be consensus.. .right now. Jourdan alluded to it in the latest 11 personnel.
I gotta say, I didn't get her alluding to Shelton being ahead of Bruss in her latest podcast. She was pretty non-committal on who the starter would be at RG. She did say to watch out for what the Rams do at RG in preseason. They really don't want starters to play, do they play Bruss though to get him some live reps? Do they play Shelton at all in any of the interior parts of the line if he's that important and still competing for a starting spot at RG. I think she was making an argument that they might not want both to play preseason as they're sorting out RG but they may not have that luxury with their numbers and getting backup skill players quality snaps behind the oline.

In fact, I think she was so non-committal that you probably can read whatever our individual biases are into her comments.

I felt like she expressed Shelton being ahead of Bruss… but I think the hedging was more about where she thinks it’s going.

Maybe I’m hearing what I want to hear.

I don't think it matters as long as we are "solid" at RG. Hell, it's a win-win. If Bruss as a rook is such a good, big-bodied RG that he beats out a guy we know we can count on, great! If he needs a little more seasoning/experience, but ultimately produces while we watch a solid Shelton, great! What's not to like?

I’m starting to think we have starting 5 plus 2 (AJax and Anchrum). Bruss and Acurri need a full year. So I’d feel better with an add to the OL (trade or cut player). Preferably a solid run blocking Guard.

My only quibble is that I want it to be someone solid in pass pro. Running is great, but protecting Stafford is paramount.

All McVay said on the video is that Shelton can play all 3 interior line jobs very well, something we already knew. This is being blown into something that it is not, ... and no-one has nailed down the day 1 starting RG job yet. Sheesh ...
Looking at this now with some hindsight it's pretty clear he was saying Shelton was ahead. Given how Bruss looked out there I can't imagine it's much of a competition even now. Rams are just calling it that publicly.

The scary thought is what if it is a competition right now. But I don't think that is the case and either way the thought is too terrifying to seriously consider for now. :laugh2:

Big opportunity for Anchrum now that Bruss is out for the season, I'd still prefer him over Shelton if the race is close, ... should Allen or Shelton get themselves injured we're in real bad shape. Perhaps Snead will dig deep and find a quality OG trade like he did when we landed Cleveland's Corbett.
