Wonder if the NFL would let Griffin play with a hook... Would that be cool or what? :p

SENIOR BOWL NOTES DAY ONE:

- The QB's struggled. Falk was the best and maybe even Benkert was 2nd. Tanner Lee looked good in the short and intermediate game. Allen was strong-armed but lacking accuracy. Baker literally just got off the plane and was put on a football field. We will see.

- Arizona State RB Kalen Ballage was the best back today. Looked very quick, sharp cuts and explosion either through the hole or when he bounced it outside. He's going to be a better pro than he was a college player.

- DaeSean Hamilton may have been a late call-up but man did he deserve to be here. Jaleel Scott looked very smooth today, James Washington tore it up, Byron Pringle flashed some verticality and Braxton Berrios plays like a madman.

- Mike Gesicki is going to be a stud at the next level. He caught everything thrown his way, his route running is very solid and he's got great size and speed for the position. The OJ Howard of the draft? Maybe? Maybe not.

- Alex Cappa is a name you need to watch. He really made an impression coming from a small-school and dominating top quality competition today. Isaiah Wynn from Georgia is a first-rounder in my mind.

- Ogbonnia Okoronkwo is going to translate. He has a toolbox of pass-rush moves and I think he is a legitimate fit for the Rams in the first-round as someone that can be a linebacker or a straight-up edge rusher.

- Love what I saw out of Dubuque's Michael Joseph. Really impressive stuff, D3 or not. Competition is competition. Joseph has the nice height at 6-1 and used it well in defending Jaleel Scott on the outside. Really impressed me.

- DB MJ Stewart from UNC was physical and really caught my eye as a mid-round pick that could really help in man coverage. He was getting work in the kick return game as well.

- Marcus Davenport has an impressive ability to convert speed to power. There were a couple of times the raw prospect met his match against Kappa and Wynn. Regardless, Davenport shows enough of a ceiling to be a first-round pick.

Damnit! Cappa needs to cool it so he last until our 3rd rounder.

2018 Reese's Senior Bowl Day 1 recap

It is fully expected that their will be miscommunications between quarterbacks and wide receivers who are strangers to each other in any all-star game format, and that was evident in Tuesday’s practices. On several occasions, quarterbacks threw to spots where they thought the receiver should be, only to have the pass hit the turf.

North quarterbacks as a group were better than the South quarterbacks in regard to accuracy. Wyoming QB Josh Allen was the most inaccurate passer of the day, as he struggled with his ball placement and on several pass attempts, wide receivers struggled with the velocity of his passes. On the afternoon, Virginia’s Kurt Benkert was the top-graded quarterback at 74.2, coming in just above Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, who finished with a 73.4 grade on Day 1.

Wide receivers on both teams struggled with drops on Tuesday as well; however, Colorado State’s Michael Gallup was the star at the position on the day and finished with the highest grade among receivers on Day 1 at 76.4. Penn State DaeSean Hamilton was able to generate separation in his routes while Boise State’s Cedrick Wilson and Miami’s Braxton Berrios both had nice catches on deep passes.

The running backs are somewhat difficult to evaluate on the first day of practice as full contact is not allowed. Arizona State’s Kalen Ballage was one of the better looking running backs on the field and was solid catching passes in practice. Southern Mississippi’s Ito Smith’s quickness was on display as he made several plays during practice. Ballage dominated the day on the grade sheet as well, finishing with a 74.6, clear above the second-highest grade for a running back (62.8, Iowa RB Akrum Wadley).

In offensive line drills, UTEP guard Will Hernandez was beaten by an outside speed rush in his first one-on-one pass protection drill, but he was able to finish strong by taking his man to the ground twice. Hernandez was also able to generate movement in run plays for the North offense. Virginia Tech guard Wyatt Teller was also solid on the day, and his movement skills were on display during zone run plays in particular. Oregon tackle Tyrell Crosby also looked strong in drills and didn’t lose a single one-on-one battle.

The tight end group is quite talented and the position group had one of the better days of practice on Tuesday. Unfortunately, the talent pool suffered some losses today, as South Dakota State’s Dallas Goedert and UMass’ Adam Breneman both left their first practice early with hamstring injuries. Wisconsin’s Troy Fumagalli had a nice one-handed catch to round out the day for the position group.

Alabama defensive tackle Da’Shawn Hand’s strength and ability to control blockers were evident throughout Tuesday’s practice, and he was the top-performer for the South’s defensive line. UTSA’s defensive end Marcus Davenport struggled with bouncing too upright during drills, which allowed offensive linemen to get their hands on his chest and control his movements.

North Carolina State interior defender Justin Jones displayed a well-defined physique for a defensive tackle at the weigh-ins and then impressed in practice as well with his combination of power and quickness at the snap, making him difficult to block for interior offensive linemen.

Linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley from Purdue set the edge well on run plays when he was lined up over a tight end, and USC’s Uchenna Nwosu made plays as a run defender and earned a “sack” during practice. In the end, it was the usual cast of characters with the highest grade among the defensive front seven, as Nwosu took the top grade of the day across any position at 82.8 and Oklahoma’s Ogbonnia Okoronkwo finished with the second-highest grade among front seven players, and third-highest overall, at 80.8.

West Virginia safety Kyzir White had a strong day with a breakup of a Baker Mayfield pass intended for Penn State’s Mike Gesicki and an interception off of Nebraska’s Tanner Lee. White finished tied with Nwosu for the highest grade of the first day of practices at 82.8.

Texas A&M’s Armani Watts had a pass broken up and a nice interception on the day to close the afternoon’s practices.

Keep an eye on Harrison Phillips. He could be Wade's new Jay Ratliff.

2018 Reese's Senior Bowl Day 3 recap
BY JORDAN PLOCHER • JAN 25, 2018

Jan 25, 2018; Mobile, AL, USA; North Squad quarterback Luke Falk of Washington State (3) throws a pass during Senior Bowl practice at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Glenn Andrews-USA TODAY Sports
Quarterback overview
Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield was the best quarterback during Senior Bowl practices as his accuracy was a step above his counterparts and he consistently displayed an ability to throw with anticipation before his wide receiver made a break on the ball. Mayfield also displayed some of the practice traits that teams will want to see from their leaders such as encouraging and congratulating his teammates and quickly moving from drill to drill.

While Mayfield continues to be a polarizing prospect in the scouting community he definitely helped his draft stock by showing up to the Senior Bowl and performing well in practices. Washington State QB Luke Falk also helped himself in Mobile and was highly effective in red zone work and performed well despite his injured wrist still protected by a brace. He continued his prowess on play action, showing that his 26.5 percent boost in completion percentage after a play fake during the season was no fluke.

Pass-catchers steal the show
Iowa State WR Allen Lazard had his best day of practice on Thursday and really stood out among both team’s wide receiver groups. Lazard had a strong day in red zone drills against defensive backs displaying good hands and body control to go along with his physicality.

Lazard also caught a nice dig route from Mayfield. Penn State’s DaeSean Hamilton stood out with several nice catches on Thursday including a touchdown over Michael Joseph from Mayfield in 7-on-7 red zone drills. Boise State WR Cedrick Wilson caught two nice touchdowns in the back of the end zone on Thursday and LSU’s DJ Chark had a nice diving catch in 2-minute drill and another in the end zone to go along with some other nice plays on the day.

The tight end that stood out the most on Thursday was Penn State’s Mike Gesicki. Gesicki beat West Virginia safety Kyzir White for a nice touchdown in red zone drills and caught a nice fade TD pass from Luke Falk.

On the defensive side of the ball
Oklahoma edge defender Ogbonnia Okoronkwo had another strong day rushing the passer due to his explosion and ability to dip around blockers. but the defensive player that flashed the most on Thursday was UCF LB Shaquem Griffin. His quickness and athleticism were on display in all phases of defensive play and on one specific rep, Griffin displayed a quick inside pass-rush move to beat Humboldt State’s Alex Cappa for a sack. In red zone drills, Griffin quickly slid inside Indiana TE Ian Thomas’s block to blow up a run.

Penn State CB Christian Campbell displayed sticky coverage in red zone drills on Thursday while Hawaii safety Trayvon Henderson caught yet another interception as well.

Small school sleepers
PFF only grades FBS college games, which means the only grades we have for FCS players are typically from individual September games against FBS opponents. Because of this, we don’t have the same depth of data for the small school players, however, several small school players stood out at one point or another in the week’s practices including the aforementioned Cappa with some dominant 1-on-1 reps.

Weber State CB Taron Johnson had several pass breakups while South Carolina State LB Darius Lenoard repeatedly made plays in coverage on Thursday and broke up several passes himself. Maybe the highlight of the day for small school prospects was when Jacksonville State CB Siran Neal locked up Oklahoma State WR James Washington during 1-on-1 drills.

North Dakota State LB Nick DeLuca also made plays in coverage on Thursday and while not an FCS player, lesser-known Georgia State CB Chandon Sullivan wasn’t intimated by the FBS’s top wide receivers and was very competitive in coverage. Richmond QB Kyle Lauletta displayed nice red zone accuracy on Thursday rounding out the afternoon’s practice.

Mayfield probably gained the most of the practice days thus far. All the talk before this week was about Allen and his measurables, but BM has whooped everyone's @$$ on the practice field for 3x days now. Receivers have talked him up re: his arm strength and accuracy, the coaches, etc.

Falk also has helped himself immensely. I mean damn that dude is going to go off the board a lot earlier thanks to this week. His ability to hit pass catchers in stride with extreme accuracy is something teams are going to want. He's going to be that QB in this draft that a lot of teams secretly love, and after day one there's going to be a lot of paranoia about someone else taking him.

Lastly re: Lazard's day today in the redzone drills... The question on him was his separation and whether it would play in the NFL. But after a rough start he's really come on with the contested catches, he made some really nice plays on fades today.

Here's a nice article on him.

FINAL DAY #SENIORBOWL PRACTICE NOTES:

- Baker Mayfield was the best QB all week and it continued today. I wanted to see more out of Luke Falk & Josh Allen. Allen to me as all the velocity in the world but still sails throws too much. Most intriguing QB the #Rams could target? Kyle Lauletta.

- Kalen Ballage and Jaylen Samuels are legitimate options to jump into that pass-catching role in the backfield in LA. Akrum Wadley has seriously struggled this week and is going to take a hit in his draft stock. Ballage and Samuels really stood out for me.

- DaeSean Hamilton reminds me of the way Zay Jones came into Mobile last year and pushed himself in top notch conversations. Hamilton was great all week showing his ability to create separation and his ability to go up and pluck the ball out of the air.

- James Washington might have put himself into the late first/second round conversations with his pure dominance as a route runner and a physical receiver this week in Mobile. Bummed that Mason Rudolph didn't get to throw to him.

- Jaleel Scott had some great moments. It was a lot like his film you see a ton of things to like and then some things he needs to clean up on. J'Mon Moore came back from a bad day one and finished strong and showed off his body control in a big way.

- Mike Gesicki is just such a playmaker. He is good enough to make you consider picking him in the first, even if you don't have a need at TE. Jordan Akins and Troy Fumagalli also really impressed in my mind. Fun TE class. It's not last year but it's good.

- Will Hernandez has made a statement this week. He was dominant as always & there is no reason to expect him to fall out of the second. I honestly don't know how someone that consistently stonewalls players would not go in the first. Hernandez stock way up

- Tyrell Crosby, Isaiah Wynn, Brian O'Neil made themselves money this week. I feel like Crosby and Wynn are really good fits for the #Rams. Bradley Bozeman could be a nice center option in the middle of the draft. Cappa is solid but I'm not sold on him.

- I will never understand why Da'Shawn Hand is being so underrated. I think he is a day two pick with the potential to shoot into day one. Sure, not a ton of production but man he ruins plays. He had a good week for sure.

- MJ Stewart, Michael Joseph and Siran Neal continued to impress me. Chandon Sullivan had a great day. It sucked to see Christian Campbell go down with an injury after he had such a great day yesterday.

- I forgot to mention. Trayvon Henderson put together many reasons why the #Rams wanted to meet with him. Very impressed with him today. Funny segment after the Gesicki touchdown he yelled over at us and asked if it was a push-off.

Wilson has great ability to track and catch the long ball with a defender on his hips. I see some Michael Thomas in him.

North team thus far looks a lot like Denver's offense... :p

Also thought it was crappy for Vance to pull Mayfield with over 2:00 minutes left in his quarter. These kids are supposed to get a quarter each, but he went to Allen a bit early.

South team looks really good on offense meanwhile. The QB White having a fine game.
