When it comes to securing a record-breaking contract extension, Russell Wilson is hoping a deadline will spur action.

Wilson has made it clear to the Seattle Seahawks that he wants a new deal by April 15, when Seattle begins its offseason program, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday. The Seattle Times first reported the news.

Entering the final year of a four-year extension signed in 2015, Wilson is the next franchise quarterback in line for a mega-extension and the right to be labeled the highest-paid player in NFL history.

The honor is currently held by Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who inked a four-year, $134 million extension in August 2018, at a league-best AAV of $33.5 million per year. The 30-year-old Wilson is slated to make $17 million and carry a $25.3 million cap hit in 2019.

Wilson said two weeks ago that there was "great potential" that he could become the league's top-paid QB this offseason.

Whether Seattle can get this deal done in the next two weeks remains to be seen. The Times' Bob Condotta reported that both sides have engaged in negotiations recently.

And while Wilson reportedly wants the deal done by mid-April, it's not clear what would happen if the deadline passes with no new contract. A veteran QB with a Super Bowl title to his name, Wilson doesn't need to show up to any offseason program and could withhold his services through the summer if he so chooses.

The two sides could also agree to put off a deal until during or after the 2019 season. Wilson said in January that he would play in 2019 without a new deal "if that's what I've got to do" and doesn't envision himself leaving Seattle. Another scenario sees Seattle place a near-$30 million franchise tag on the QB entering the 2020 season, after which the league's collective bargaining agreement expires.

Wilson isn't the only signal-caller due for a pay raise in the near future. Jared Goff, Carson Wentz, Dak Prescott and Patrick Mahomes are all expected to earn extensions of varying degrees over the next two seasons.

So Seattle is not only racing to meet Wilson's soft deadline. The Seahawks are also jockeying for position with other organizations negotiating their own QB extensions.

Why does everyone deserve to be the highest paid player? Why can’t he sign a 4 year $90 million deal? Is that not enough? The QB market is completely destroying the game.

I don't know how you stop it without a deal between the players and the owners. If RW doesn't try to max out (or his agent try to get it for him), they are leaving money on the table. It won't take long for him to be supplanted by the next big QB's contract. I think they need to remove the QB's contract money from the figuring of the CAP, somehow.

Perhaps a max % of any one player against a teams salary cap. This will keep any one team for setting a new ridiculously high mark for a position that unreasonably sets a new mark for the entire league.

To be fair, Russ has been basically orchestrating a one man army there for years. He deserves every penny he gets.

I’d be elated if he becomes disgruntled and talks fall through, eventually ending up with him out of a Shehawk uniform.

The NBA has a max contract in place already. I think that we're going to see that in the next CBA. Along with a few other things as well. I think the union is going to push hard to get rid of testing for weed. And the max contract could be a trade off to get that pushed through.

I think it would be a win for both sides.

Although I am warming to the idea of the federal government decriminalizing weed due to pain relief benefits without using opiods, it's still illegal and the NFL is an interstate organization. Drug tests tell the federal govt that an organization with as much stature as the NFL, is being compliant with federal law. They may lose advocates in Washington, and may also gain others (admittedly). The Union will get push back from the owners on this question, seeing that they don't like rocking the boat at all. Making pot legal federally will eliminate any opposition, I think.

If A Rodgers got 33 Million a year with 96 Million guaranteed then Wilson will get the same or more. That's a lot of money but, Goff will get a lot soon too. Got to be smart with contracts and find cheap alternatives like the Rams did with Mathews. You have to have max drafts and UDFA picks as well. Hags are really average or below without RW.

How is that comparable with what we did with Matthews? All know the reasoning is that QB's are the most important chess piece on the board, and that fact affects all other contracts. But you also can't win with journeyman, low cost (comparatively) QB's without the best defense in history (Ravens and Bears). There is no way to be "smart" about a force outside of your control.

The owners are making record profits why shouldn't the players who produce the profit get their cut, too? The only people who benefit from your idea is the owners lol.

I still think QB contracts should not count against the cap beyond a set value, say $20M. Anything beyond that would have the teams pay a Luxury tax that was progressive so the first Million over the $20M would be taxed to the team at a modest rate and it would ramp up such that the tax on a $40M AAV would be substantial.

Cuz this whole thing of relying on rookie QB contracts to find that "window" is ridiculous.
