Hate to say it, but re-signing Tutu and the inability to trust Hunter as the 3rd RB, means we are carrying Rivers & Tutu, neither of which can or should be on our special teams. Thus coverage and return teams suffer. Should have an extra DB on the roster, one of which we could have used Tutu's money on in FA. Or one in the draft, if they weren't going to use Hunter. Could have kept Schraeder as 3rd RB, and drafted a CB.
Just shows how small offseason moves can impact the entire season.
Yes just read your post and I agree. We're seeing that one the same. And by the way this isn't new. It's not just a this-season thing. This is instead a McVay thing. It's been one of his biggest issues over his time with us, which again I have to caveat this by saying he's a great coach because some folks can't seem to keep that balance in their heads while criticizing him.As I mentioned above, roster construction is part of the issue. Maybe too many WRs, not enough DBs or LBs. Tutu is a wasted roster spot if you can't use him on offense or ST's. Rivers does nothing special and certainly can't cover on ST's.
Blackburn probably should go, but he is hamstrung a bit due to the roster. Martz was similar. Too many offense toys and not enough ballers for ST's.
He overcomes his teams issues more often than not. But he could potentially benefit greatly from a better stacked teams unit to handle that third of the game.
So you are right about Tutu and Rivers. Tutu made the roster when they paid him the absurd total of $10M. Fans can rationalize the value of the contract, but what it effectively means is he makes the team. Same by the way with Mumps. Now Mumps has helped us too, he's a good depth player. But more emphasis needs to be placed on teams in those bottom roster and depth spots.
Why in the fuck is it so hard to draft a goddamn RETURNER WITH WHEELS AND ELUSIVENESS. Then give that MFer a bottom roster spot. Same with gunners, who are the pointy end of the special teams spear to force fair catches when your punter decides to kick shallow middle of the field meatballs in the biggest game of the season in Seattle.
