There is something to be said having a pro bowl player in all three levels of the defense.

Are we really better than last year? As a team?

Maybe. Wagner doesn’t replace Miller but paired with Ernest Jones Morris can use either to pressure the QB.

Miller came along mid season. Wagner will be in camp. His leadership will affect the team for the better for the entire season.

They still need a corner and edge. They’ve got time and the draft. Jourdan ‘thinks’ edge may come via a trade. Maybe that means she was told something had been in the works.

I think Wagner will make those Deebo passes and runs up the gut, dealt with much more effectively. So no, Wagner doesn’t replace Von, but the Rams will be better in different ways…

Totally agree w/ @Loyal we match up way better now vs. the whiners. After the extension w/ AD99 gets done who's to say we don't add Clownley. Just sayin'

Reeder was just limited in all aspects, he wasn’t very good moving laterally, wasn’t quick to the hole and wasn’t good in coverage. Teams, the niners especially, attacked him repeatedly and replacing him with a safety got them knocked around at the los. Wagner has made a career out of being physical at the line and knowing the opponents formations and playbook. Linebacker was the biggest weakness of this defense and everyone knew it. The rams tried to scheme around it, sometimes it worked.
Not only do you not target Wagner, you probably want to scheme away from him. Whether they’re better is gonna depend on if they can find a pass rush. Hopefully Floyd can find a cure for what ails him and someone else(Garrett, Lewis, player X ?) can provide some pressure.
Wagner knows the niners as well as anybody, hopefully the days of them rushing for 180 yds are over. We’ll see if the defense is better but at least the holes will be harder to find.

Right now it seems Shanahan would be figuring to attack the edge where Von was or possibly try throwing downfield and attacking the smaller corners. If they can shore up the edge and one corner spot them this defense will be very difficult to attack. Health and maybe improving some one or two backup roles would be huge.

People seem to disregard Lewis. He's pretty good at the POA if you run to his side. He will have Hollins behind him who I keep saying is underrated. Now the thought of AD and Gaines with Wagner behind them is mind-blowing. They just sealed their leaky inside run defense.

This team is definitely better this year. Woods was good, but Robinson brings a toughness opposite Kupp. Want to run against the Rams? They have to get through AD, Gaines, Robinson and now Wagner. LOL Want to pass? Ramsey on one side, Rochell on the other side with Fuller and Scott the punisher inside. Don't forget Nick timed at 4.43, Rochell at 4.3, and Ramsey at 4.3. The Rams have serious speed in the secondary. This roster is in some ways more complete IMO than last year. Both Rochell and Scott should take that next step up. With this roster Morris has no excuse.

If the Rams get Hunter or someone like him to play the edge opposite Floyd, OMG this defense can totally dominate and matchup with any team in the NFL.

Both Blanton and Hopkins had breakout years. The Rams are truly 3 deep at TE. When OBJ comes back in December watch the fuck out.

If McVay isn't going to play with a true FB then he needs to ditch the power run attack and just go to an inside or outside zone concept with an occasional counter. Or if McVay wants to still play with only one RB he can run a power concept by pulling one of his OGs. The OT and OG double on the DT while the OG pulls and executes a block on the DE opening the run lane. The Pats and Chargers used to use that years ago. My point is that either McVay runs a traditional power with a FB lead or he can do it with an OG. But you need a OG that is mobile enough to get to the POA on time. Edwards and Corbett couldn't do that but Shelton might be able to because he use to do that at UW. Allen could do it if the NT is a 1T shaded to the opposite side of where the run is going and the OG can block him.

All I'm saying is that McVay really needs to design his plays better or play with a FB when he wants to run. That IMO would make his play action even more effective. So to fix the run game it's either better play design or get a damn FB. Sean is great at designing pass plays but not so much with the run game. I'm hoping that will change with Coen as OC.

My thoughts exactly. Don't think we run quite as much nickel as last year,
because Jones and Wagner are both far better at coverage than what we had in the
middle last year.
Both are effective blitzers as well

What ails him? He's had 20 sacks in 2 years with the Rams. You'd have to go back to 2013-14 to find somebody other than AD to have 20 sacks in two years (Quinn 29.5; and he was our sack leader both seasons). Floyd is the #2 and 20 in 2 years is pretty damn good. Fowler had 13.5 in a year and a half (1/2 of 2018 + 2019).

They've made some deals with Jacksonville the past few years, with unhappy players. Fowler and Ramsey. Josh Allen is a UFA next year and if they trade him they save 3.6 mil this year and don't have to play him long term starting next year. Don't know if he's unhappy but it wouldn't surprise me. Draft Aiden Hutchinson, trade Allen.

Wagner takes away what the 9er's have been able to do to us in the run game.
That was the first thing that came to my mind after signing.
It helps us match up with the Packers too. Especially if we have to go to the frozen tundra again.
