He has far exceeded expectations for a 5th round pick. Winning primary backup responsibilities and handling himself vs other teams' starters and primary backups at different line positions to include LT is kind of a big deal.

This dude is going to go down as a fine pick and part of the reason this year's draft ends up being ranked as one of our best. I have very, very high expectations for this group personally.
Ehh.
He didn’t stand out to me.
Winning the primary backup role was sort of by default.
He did improve as the preseason went along, which is really the key thing.
Pass blocking seemed solid.
The real test of the McSnead approach to building the team this way starts on Sunday with how the young o lineman perform.

Expect Jamil Demby & David Edwards to be the two dressed OL'ers Sunday. OC Shelton has not been with the team long enough yet to fill in the reserve OC role.

I would summarize that if there was a need for a new center this Sunday he will come from the RG post with Jamil Demby replacing Blythe.

Rams would re-evaluate how that worked out after the game. As for week two its anybody's guess as to who will be our OC if Allen can go........ might be Blythe, Shelton, Demby or even Kolone.:palm:

I get where you're coming from. But most 5th rounders are just trying to make the team tbh. This dude is a lot more than that imo.

A stark lack of competition as well in preseason.
But, I don’t disagree. He may end up being very good

Kromer got lucky with Edwards & unlucky {thus far} with Demby & Evans thus far.

David Edwards {DE} gives Kromer some serious relief on that left side as this regular season begins. DE can be the swing OT & Back Up LG on game day. If Whitworth was a no go then Noteboom would slide a few feet left to LG & DE would fit good @ LG or Kromer could just go with DE @ LT.

Kromer, however gets no relief @ the right side. I would have both Jamil Demby & Rookie Bobby Evans concentrate totally on the RIGHT OG post! DE can handle the rest of the three posts. This is the most worrisome issue of all concerns on this young OL.

How is this news? Yes, Edwards played the best of the backups. That said he played relatively few snaps at OG and that against lower-level competition. When the second units were in he played the majority of his snaps at OT. If Coleman shows well in practice he might give them an option to Demby as that #7 o-line backing up at C and OG. He's had a year to build himself up and I'm sure Kromer has him in the weight room now. Don't forget, Blythe had that same label as well and still does. At RG he is less exposed as he gets a lot of help from the center. Coleman has much better feet than Blythe, he's a bigger man with slightly longer arms as well. IMO if Blythe can play in this system at RG so can Coleman and probably play it better. That said he might struggle if he has to play LG which is why until they have someone that can Edwards will play swing OT this season and hope he holds up if called upon.

Yeah I think Kromer has been doing what you suggest, he's had Evans on the right side since the first game where he struggled when flipping back and forth. I suspect that will speed along his learning curve, knowing his feet & technique on that side at least.

I believe Evans is more typical of what you can expect with OL outside that early draft group, where he has talent but isn't polished enough in his technique to start. He does have really good talent, and he's not a dip$hit like, say, Robinson, i.e. he seems to be a guy who wants to work hard and get better. So I think he'll be just fine the same way it took Havenstein a while to settle in. Hav was clumsy as F at first, some guys just need time but if they have the talent and give a F it's just a matter of time.
