If Peters plays like an elite all pro, I normally would have no problem signing him to big money. Elite corners are valuable in this league. Especially in one and done playoff games.

But we have one problem. We're already paying Donald elite money. And he's definitely worth it. Could we afford to pay two defensive players elite money when we have two years left on some rookie contracts with guys we need to keep? Goff, Kupp and Johnson all have two years left. What if Everett starts to break out?

Also of course next year's CB draft class will factor in to the decision. Talib hits FA as well, but I see him as the guy they'll keep around and they'll load another CB or two via next year's draft. If the class sucks (haven't really looked) then yes maybe a tag could happen but I doubt it.

Yup.

McVay doesn't do the contracts. He, as the tweet said, wants the Rams to resign him. That's not the same as McVay resigning him.

Demoff does the contracts. Now that doesn't stop McVay from lobbying and talking to Demoff about getting a deal done, but contracts are at Demoff's discretion for the most part with some input from Snead and McVay. Demoff handles "all things contract", and he has been doing a great job at it.

The reason this troika is working so well is that each of the three has there own "territory". And while they communicate about probably most things they each have final say over their "territory".

I believe Demoff actually set it up this way to avoid pissing matches, power grabs and ego clashes.

This is important because so often a FO will implode because the lines aren't clearly enough drawn and problems develop because of that. This team has been nothing but smooth sailing because these three don't have to worry about one of the others trying to usurp their authority.

Oh and also..........another part of the smooth sailing is because they are all very good at what they do, and they seem to be aware of that and respect each other.
Reread my post. McVay said “the Rams want to resign Peters” so he was not speaking out loud about what he wants, he was speaking for the team.

There is zero chance that when asked that question about a player with a year left on his contract, that the GM would say "Nope. Not going to resign him." Nothing good would come from such a statement, and could cause problems for the team if the player started to demand a trade, or if the coach asked the player to do something that he felt wasn't going to maximize his value.

GMs are not stupid - they are not going to make blatant negative statements about their own players. It would hurt any possible trades, it might cause dissension around the team. It also would hurt their chances if circumstances changed, and he decided in the future to try to resign the player. A statement like "the Rams want to resign Peters" means exceptionally little.
