I'm coming around to being ok with a RB early especially since I don't expect that they will extend Kyren.

But I still have tempered expectations that a RB would be utilized much in year one. Breaking big runs is great but lest we forget, McVay requires his RBs to be good pass protectors before they get many snaps.
He called Judkins a nasty blocker. I'm telling folks, he's the real deal and a realistic prospect to be there for us.

So this question is for Mojo and Neil.... which RBs would you deem worthy of our #26 pick? By the way, I'm all for adding a weapon there.
I'm not a fan of the price to trade up to get Jeanty, it is not worth it IMO. So at #26- I am fan of Hampton (Tar Heels). Second to him Johnson (Iowa). If the Rams were to trade out of the 1st to the 2nd round Hampton if he's there along with Johnson (Iowa), Judkins (Ohio State). They excel in Gap heavy schemes that the Rams utilize. In the 3rd or 4th if the Ram swing it Sampson (Tennessee) for a 3rd down back with big play potential.

Do you have a preference for a particular RB this draft?

Martinez will be better than both Ohio St kids. He'll be better than the Iowa kid. He'll be better than Hampton. Scouts don't love him but he's got natural power in his running, good vision, and more burst than anyone realizes. He is going to be a stud in the NFL and will outperform most of the dudes taken above him.

Skattebo is similar too. Hoping McVay gets crazy and decides that he wants to see some power paired with his passcatchy sumbish backfield.

Nice.... Hampton/Judkins are my preferences (stid type backs) if they go early although I'd love nothing more than to trade back and still get either one. I like Judkins a bit better though as he showed out in big games and is a pretty damn decent pass blocker. I like Johnson as well but later 2nd to 3rd there. That VT running back Tuten would be nice later and so would Harvey from UCF. Crazy how many running backs are coming out.

No way Martinez will be better than Judkins but hey, you like your guy so I get it. Cheers!

He has a combination of very good traits that are effective enough that its not necessary to draft a back early imo. Sure, he doesn't have break away speed. That's not his game. He still is one of the best backs in the league.
Agreed.
I wouldn't draft a back high......ever probably, or very rarely.

Jeanty's game is undeniable and the reason why the top analysts are calling him a generational talent.

He will go top 12 without a doubt, so no chance we are sniffing him.

But I also don't see us taking Hampton if he falls, though I like him as well.

Smart organizations are hesitant on taking RB's, TE's, IOL, ILB and Safety.

The reason is filling those voids in free agency is dirt cheap for the top guys vs the top QB - 60M, WR- 40M, Edge - 30M, LT- 30M and CB - 30M.

Top RB's, TE's, IOL, ILB and Safety will only cost you ~20M in Free Agency.

So let's say I am the Rams and know I need to fill QB/WR and TE/RB next year.

Do I:
1. In Free Agency: Pay 60M - QB, 40M - WR and tie up 100M?

2. Draft QB/WR and pay 20M - RB, 20M - TE and tie up only 40M in Free Agency?

If I select option 2 I save 60M, that I can spend on other players.

These cap implications come into play in the draft.

If you can get your top QB/WR/Edge/LT in the draft then you will have money to get those cheaper positions filled in Free Agency.

This is why if you really believe in Dart or Shedeur Sanders (expected to fall) then you draft them.

I could also see Egbuka or Burden at 26 if we can't trade back. Burden might not have the character the Rams are looking for, but he has a massive ceiling to be a top WR and can thrive in a Mcvay system, learning behind Davante for a year or two.

CB is also in play early in the draft but in my opinion a move back would be best to get one of those guys. I like Revel Jr, who might be there at 26 but he projects better to a heavy press man team then the Rams.

NFL is a "copycat league", with the success of Saquon and Gibbs, the tide will shift and you'll see teams more apt to invest in RB.
McShay saying this is the best RB class he's seen in his 25 years? Wow. Sounds like he's been doing research on ROD

Makes sense. All these teams playing two deep and hyper focusing on the pass game means RB is cycling back as a priority.

Does this mean you'll be suiting up for the Rams at H-Back? Kiper and McShay have heard through the rumor mill @Loyal is dusting off his leather helmet!

That shit would go worse than them relying on Henderson.

If the Rams had explosive pass catchers in terms of running away from defenders, the Kyren problem wouldn’t be as magnified in my eyes.

You never feel like our backs are going to to break away when they get to the second level. There’s always a tackle.

Kyren is a quality chain mover and pass protector. He’s decent around the goal line. Has sporadic ball security issues.
If that’s all you want from your feature back then fine, extend him. Call it good.

My view is he gets more touches than anyone else on offense so we need a true weapon there.

The Rams need to add about 6-7 points per gm to the output this year. That’s alot.

Fact is, the Rams offense hasn’t had a 30ppg offense since Gurley was here. In the ‘21 championship year (27ppg) we got a God mode season from Kupp.

22,23,24ppg and a solid but plodding run game with Stafford throwing to Nacua and Adams isn’t enough.

I’ll keep banging the table that the offense needs a tool to scare defenses that doesn’t put so much weight upon our aging QB’s arm to deliver.
What was the average in 2023, it was up there but not 30ppg.

I still think Corum is being underrated. He was an explosive back at Michigan and had a lot of long runs. I'll maintain, I would definitely not sign Kyren to an extension. I think you only sign a back to a 2nd contract is if they are special. He's good, not special. Corum with another back in this draft and we are fine there. Corum looked more explosive in his limited touches last year. Gurley was special (albeit, he had a known knee issue) which warrants a 2nd contract, and even that was a disaster.

No way I'd take a back at #26 unless you have traded Kyren or have a standing offer. We have more starter level needs that need addressed in our limited top 100 picks.
I like Corum but I wouldn't use the word "explosive" to describe him.
