We had a sub fleet? ~ Chester Nimitz

"Nimitz was the leading US Navy authority on submarines. Qualified in submarines during his early years, he later oversaw the conversion of these vessels' propulsion from gasoline to diesel, and then later was key in acquiring approval to build the world's first nuclear-powered submarine, USS Nautilus, whose propulsion system later completely superseded diesel-powered submarines in the US."

Game. Set. Match.

Sounds like a little bit jealousy? I wouldn't know about todays military as well, but the SEALS in the 80's were seriously bad assed. Not saying the Rangers weren't as well, but I've always considered the SEALS as the best of the best. Your opinion may differ.

SEALS are great at PR. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they were different in the past but modern SEALS? Nah, rubbish.

I have plenty of stories about working with them, as the war went on most groups got better, especially the real top guys like the CIA and Delta (these are the two groups that will recruit from anyone, including ST6, they're the absolute best of the best, even ST6 is technically just another SEAL team since they only recruit from other SEAL teams, the best of those guys get picked up by Delta or CIA).. Rangers really made it a point to close the gap between us and the guys a few rungs above us (like SF), MARSOC decided to act like an actual SOCOM team and stop wearing branch specific uniforms/restart the Marine Raiders.. Even the Airforce TACP's and PJ's stepped up their game.

SEALS though, I just don't get what their deal is, if they were way too trigger happy or what. Whenever we went on joint ops with them they would end up getting in a gun fight while the rest of us could actually stay hidden (like we were supposed to), they left sensitive items on the battlefield all the time, would have to have other gear blown up, abandon small hides with GPSs and radios in them and require an air strike, they were largely the ones who basically told Garmin where some of America's secret bases were because they would literally run the perimeter of the wire with them on and it would map the entire fucking compound, so basically running OPSEC violations. and their target identification was so horrid, they shot so many civilians that local governors would be begging us not to let them leave the wire.. Then the SEALS would come back requesting an op to bag and tag the local governor because they were upset about being grounded.

It was honestly shocking how shit they were, because like you, I had an idea in my head of what they were supposed to be. Working with them I figured out that they were basically just a bunch of dipshits jacking off about BUDs, even though in comparison to the other JSOC courses they had a much lower wash rate. They're better off climbing anchor chains with their MP5's than running around the battlefield with an M4.

I don't know when you were in, but my sense is they (the SEALs) started going downhill in the last decade or so. I think a lot of it has to do with the generation coming up. And I get the sense that a lot of them want the Trident as a feather in their cap, not because they want to do what is required of SEALs in a professional and a disciplined manner.

Basically right around that time, I joined a little more than 15 years ago, got out about a decade back. They're definitely more about the clout than doing the job as a professional IMO. The Navy really hypes them up for recruitment purposes, and maybe it goes to their head a bit. A lot of the "famous" ones are total shit shows.

Even the guy who claimed he shot up Bin Laden, the guy ran away from his assignment to chase clout and shoot up his dead body so he could take credit. Meanwhile the guy who actually iced him stayed out of the spotlight and retired. Both of the guys who wrote books about the raid were making up a bunch of shit but the Navy loves it. Same with Chris Kyle, the guy made up awards for himself (not to mention other stuff, like shooting Americans in New Orleans) and the Navy decided it was easier to toss him a few extra medals than deal with the PR fallout. It's just for the clout, not for any sense of duty.
