In the 2nd half the 9ers attacked Reeder and the safeties by getting to the edges with tosses and quick passes. They had great success doing this, often being in 2nd or 3rd and short.
The question is does any team other than the 9ers have the type of physical run game to implement a strategy like this. The rams had guys in position to defend these plays but were unable to, repeatedly. The Packers maybe?
Can Jones do a better job or are we in for a steady diet of this?
And what should the counter to this be? This isn’t some genius strategy that we need to go back and watch the film to figure out, the 9ers ran for 150 yds the first time they met.

Bro it was just bad tackling. Time to move on
Yup.

But I was listening to 11 personnel and they were talking about how the offense switching to toss made it easy to target Reeder and safeties.

What's the counter there? And why didn't the Rams have one?

Should Von Miller and Floyd be setting the edge in the run game? We went from 290+ Brockers to 240-250 linebackers. I want to see our big bodies on the line if we're having trouble stopping the run.

Well, the 9ers did this to us when we had Brockers too

Obviously the defense didn't have an answer for it. I wouldn't put it all on Reeder tho, that's the lazy way out. Reeder isn't bad against the run. Does he have weaknesses? Yes. But as far as I'm concerned the whole team played like garbage in the 2nd half. McVay got lazy and so did Morris. Playing a soft shell defense and McVay running 5 and 7 step drops for Stafford. Again, Square peg, Round Hole mentality.

I've watched the game film and the common problem for the rams have is, they get stuck into this "philosophy" of packages. 11 personnel, deep drops, empty sets,
3-4 hybrid, Star position, and soft shell defenses. Again, I brought this up in the Morris thread... If McVay and Morris keep going into that deep shell come playoff time every time they have a lead, they're gonna end up blowing a game. IE the 9ers game. You CAN'T do that against playoff teams. And the 9ers are a playoff team, like it or not.

On offense, you can't keep on telling the opposing defense, "hey this is what we're gonna do" (empty sets) and expect defenses not know what to do in those situations. Since we played the Cardinals and Titans teams have in a sense emulated their defense when we played empty sets. The outcome has been the same every,.. single... time... we play a good team.

I'll say this, I think this year McVay will get a pass from ownership. I'm in no way saying he'll be fired or whatever,
But next season. If it's the same ol same ol that we've become accustom to... Then i'll bet he gets put on the hot seat. There's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much talent on this team and coaching staff to end up just making the playoffs and not making it to the SB. Expectations are too high here in LA.

I agree wholeheartedly. Like I said in the other thread, my fear is that McVay will never change regarding his pass happy and empty sets on 3rd and 1. He is brilliant we know that. But I worry he thinks he's so brilliant that he can make low percentage chance decisions every time the opportunity presents itself. He HAS TO stop it! Not next year, RIGHT NOW!

He needs to change his thought process before this Monday night playoff game. He has to show some humility with his play calling, so we don't throw games away.

How dare you insinuate that Reeder is lacking in any way , shape or form.
He does not make mistakes.
And there are people here that will argue with you until the end of time, that he is flawless
in every way. :laugh4:

Yes he would have, even as a rookie he is a far superior tackler than
what we currently have. Unfortunately I think he is gone for the season.
I hope I am wrong about that. Because unless he comes back look for
our run defense to be mediocre at best.

I think Floyd has had injury issues all year...and even now he's been DNP. There's trouble if he can't go.

We know Reeder is a pass liability...but honestly he's been playing well.

Forget the 9er game. I put the defense at about 85-90% for the Cards. They gotta tackle well and keep the passes in front them.

The Cards are gonna go for the size mismatch in the pass game with Jones for sure!

I agree, it won’t be anytime soon….But even perennial winners who were not able to perform well in playoff situations eventually are shown the door…see Marty Schottenheimer. Hoping Sean continues down his current path of making the Rams tougher on the LOS. The jumbo running sets are an encouragement as we have seen Sony mostly effective down the stretch.

Agree, if you’re not willing to pull the trigger it’s an hollow threat, and are you really going to can a guy who goes to the playoffs basically every year and went to the SB?

I didn't say fired. I said hot seat. As in the pressure will increase due to the lack of being able to win a SB. With the following....

The best WR in the league
The best DT in the league and NFL history
The best CB in the league
A top ten QB
A top ten OLB unit with Floyd and Miller
A top ten Dline
A top ten WR core as a whole
The best kicker in the NFL
And one of the best offensive minds in the NFL

Do I need to go on?

I think it's obvious they became aware of the need to counter. Why else would they bring in weddle.
