Something to keep in the back of our Ram minds as we await the official first edition of the Rams 53 player roster is the dismal play of our special teams for the regular season warm up against the Vikings.....it could lead to some surprising releases & some additions based on improving the ST performance.

The reserve LB'ing & secondary units usually play a heavy hand but after watching all four preseason games I was NOT impressed with the play of these two units. It would not surprise me if no rookie DB's make the 53. On Lb'ers I keep hearing Cory Littleton or Josh Forrest but the only Lb'er that I see putting in solid play is MLB'er Brandon Chubb & the Rams as not in need of a MLB'er.

For instance ...Cam lynch's pre-season play while playing for Mark Barron was poor but I did not see another Lb'er outplay him. The only player who flashed in the WSLB'er post was when safety Mo Alexander played a few series in it & Gregg Williams quickly yanked him from the field after his short bright performance in Barron's post. Lynch play on the defense was poor but he is a proven ST ace!

We may see more of MO up close & personal (to the LOS) in the future:whistle:.

I dot't think many people had any rookie DBs making the team anyway, maybe Randolph, but he got hurt, so no real worries there.

Rams are nickel/big nickel heavy team so the combination of Joyner, 3 safeties (Davis, Mcdonald, Alexander) will play alot more than Akeem Ayers making him essentially a package player/ backup LB like he was last year. Ayers wasn't good in the preseason, but he was solid last year when asked to play more off the ball when Ogletree went down. So the top reserve LBs are Ayers and Hager, with lynch and possibly a rookie (if they keep 6 LBs) like Forrest or Chubb contributing mainly on special teams. No team in the NFL has stars coming off the bench as off the ball LBs because those guys are mainly expect to be key contributors on special teams.

I am not as concerned about LB as others, but we will definitely be in a better position if we stay healthy because loosing Tree or Barron could change how the defense plays big time.

Your right on Akeem Ayers pre season play...not what we would expect for him who is carries himself very well & professional like. But I sure like Ayers being on this roster he can do most anything you ask of him. he is a good Ram LB'er to have in reserve. But yes as you said both Hager & Ayers are basically the top reserves with Lynch being active to play ST's. Not sure how healthy Hager is have not heard any reports since he was taken to the locker room early against the Vikings due to injury. Only thing that could put Ayers in danger of being cut is his $$$ 3.3 million price tag for what is a reserve LB'er.

The WSLB'er Barron position could easily be backed up by Mo Alexander or the 6-2 1/2 220 pound McDonald if need be. Ayers has played all the LB'er positions in the 34 & 43 defense since college & some 3 point DE too so he could fill in for Ogletree if there is an issue with Hager. So when you go deep & detailed like....there is just no real need for any huge LB'ing cadre on this 53. Like I was posting earlier on about our pending capacity to field a serious talented "Big Safety Nickle"with 4 safeties on the field.

The fact that normally Fisher has found UDFA's Lb'ers who have contributed in their rookie seasons i.e Bates & Lynch but this 2016 season it would appear to be abbey-normal in his findings where I see no Lb'er on this current rooster other than the ones mentioned in our posts worthy of keeping.

"LB'ing stars coming off the bench" reserve Shane Ray of the Broncos starred very bright against us.;) but he was going up against Darrell Williams all night:).

Btw - anyone who makes the final 53 man today still has to sweat it out until noon tomorrow to see if the Rams claimed someone else's cut ...

"We have decided to go with two QB's, and Mannion is just better at this point than Goff..We have to cut our losses because it's apparent he is a BUST after 4 Preseason games, therefore we are releasing Jared Goff with hopes of stashing him on the Practice Squad.....
