Fisher drafted Jenkins early 2nd and Trumaine Johnson in the 3rd. The McSnead team, in 8 years, has only drafted one CB as early as the 3rd round. Think the failure to use premium picks could be it?
Part of it to was Fisher was a DB in the NFL and coached DB’s a long while. That might be part of it, but the Fisher regime seemed to get contributors even in the later rounds at DB. Their record at other positions was mixed but they always seemed to get something out of the DBs they took, and I can only think of one I would definitely say was a bust (can't remember his name, but he was a late-rounder out of Miami). We've had a lot of Taylor Rapp/David Long types under the current regime.
Don't get me wrong, I'd take this regime over that one any day of the week, but just pointing out their one Achilles heel in the draft.
That's a nice pull. I think that alone is worth a 6th round pick.
He was passed up by two undrafted free agent rookies. Both looked pretty good in limited play. Josh Wallace and Charles Woods. Can't say he will be sorely missed but the Rams do need to add to the CB room this off season. This is another prime example of addition by subtraction.
I get your sentiments as I had the same feeling. So I decided to take a deeper dive and am now changing my mind. That might be part of it, but the Fisher regime seemed to get contributors even in the later rounds at DB. One thing that drove Fisher’s picks and maybe even Snead early on was athletic measurables. You find that often in corners. It could be part of why they picked the huts where they did.I get your sentiments as I had the same feeling. So I decided to take a deeper dive and am now changing my mind.
Here are all of the McSnead CB/DB picks since 2017.
John Johnson (3rd) - Definite hit.
Taylor Rapp (2nd) - He's every bit as much a hit as some of Fisher's guys like Alexander.
David Long (3rd) - Nope
Nick Scott (7th) - I'd say a hit as a 7th round pick.
Terrell Burgess (3rd) - Nope
Jordan Fuller (6th) - Definite hit as a starter for 4 years.
Robert Rochell (4th) - Nope
Cobie Durant (4th) - He's a contributor which is sufficient for a 4th rounder so I'm calling it a hit
Quentin Lake (6th) - A contributor every season, played every snap last year...a definite hit especially as a 6th round pick.
Derion Kendrick (6th) - Still on the team. Per Jourdan, Rams like him; fans hate him. Your call.
Russ Yeast (7th) - Nope
Tre'Vius Tomlinson (6th) - Nope
Kamren Kinchens (3rd) - Too soon to call. Looks good so far.
That's 13 picks over 8 years. Five of the 13 used a premium pick. And from my list above, I'm seeing 8 contributors out of the 13 picks.
Fisher had Joyner, Alexander, Gaines, CB Bryant, McDonald, Brandon McGee, Jenkins, and Trumaine Johnson...going backwards from 2016 - 2012. I don't see his hit rate being much better. He also used premium picks - top 100 - at a higher rate.
Jeff Fisher was a DB and a special teamer as a player. It stands to reason that he understands those units very well. That might be part of it, but the Fisher regime seemed to get contributors even in the later rounds at DB.
