Let me paraphrase one of your fellow posters. "If QB's don't want to get hit, they should throw the ball sooner." If I remember correctly, Foles was out of the pocket and trying to extend the play. And if I am not mistaken, Joseph was called for it.
You are mistaken on both counts. Foles was in the pocket, had thrown the ball, and the hit came late with no flag. As long as I'm thinking of the same play. If not - I dunno. I was watching it on a tv in a casino in Reno. But I am not trying to make a point about the hit on Foles. I didn't think it looked malicious but I also didn't think Joyner's hit looked malicious.

I'm sorry man but if you are a QB and you are going to run, you shouldn't be allowed to take advantage of a rule by waiting to slide only when you realize you are going to get throttled. That rule is designed to allow QBs to get down before the defender starts his launch toward him. By taking advantage of that rule, the QB is giving up yardage. Teddy did nothing of the sort. If Teddy gets down earlier, we are not having this conversation.

I provided the youtube video of the hit in a recent post here. Look at the speed and angle Joyner is heading at Teddy. Are you saying anyone could pull up on that? Or are you saying that QBs shouldn't be allowed to be hit that hard when they tuck the ball down to run? It's one or the other.

That's a good theory except teddy got the 1st down after about 3 steps. He's just a greedy sob that wanted every yard he could get. Think he will go down earlier next time?

.

I understand it, but I've never liked this rule...I'm in the camp that thinks that if a QB chooses to run, he then becomes a RB...Sorry, suck it up when you get hit...Don't want to get hit ??? Don't run...Pretty Simple...

By rule they can't be...It's a bad rule...Has been since day one...But it's a rule none the less...

Can't be what? I'm not arguing. I just don't know what "By rule they can't be" means.

I'm just saying that they can't be hit hard if they slide...I hate the rule, I just made the point that IS the rule...OK, I'm done, don't want to get anybody excited by giving my opinion...I thought my post was pretty easily understood, maybe I didn't do a good job of being clear about what part of the previous post I was addressing...My thought process outstrips my capacity to type many times...

No - I was just curious what you meant. I hate the rule too. I suppose I didn't explain what I meant that well either. I was referring to being allowed to hit the QB as hard when he doesn't slide. In other words, if he is a runner, he should be able to be hit every bit as hard as any other runner. If that is the case, which I believe it should be, a defender should not be expected to hold up unless the QB slides early enough to prevent such bang bang plays. Joyner was coming hard and was going to lay the wood - no doubt. At the last quarter second, Teddy slides. Is that really on Joyner? I realize I appear to be preaching to the choir here.

I am not saying a QB shouldn't be allowed to run. That would be ludicrous. But if he decides to run, he is taking every bit as much risk as any other runner - or at least he should be. And the rule actually states that any runner can slide and not get hit. It doesn't have to be the QB. I just think how they are using the rule is idiotic. I would even go so far as to have them penalize a QB for faking a slide. But if they are going to keep up this BS, the QBs should be ruled down as soon as a defender can get within two yards of them.

I get it, I think we were both just a bit confused by a post...I really am done with this now, though..I think I've said and read about all that there is without getting really redundant...Carry on, my good friends...Do the Rams play this weekend ??

I know Joyner isn't a dirty player. What happened was not intentional. But he'll have to be fined heavily for a temporary lapse in judgment. But I still believe once a quarterback turns from passer to runner he does so at his own peril. Protect him as a passer and its fine. He can be vulnerable. But running with it? I don't care for that rule.

The rules in the NFL that have been created in order to protect the QB are laughable at this point. It's the biggest single reason why I find myself less interested in the sport with each passing year. I know we need to protect from the concussions, but this is a sport predicated on intimidating the opponent by physical contact and it has always involved fast-moving athletes hitting each other. The Joyner play was a PERFECT example of a defensive player not given enough time to react to a slide and therefore summarily be labeled a "dirty player" by the media. I'm SO completely tired of this grandstanding BS. I understand the reasoning, but not every single player in the league will have problems later in life because of head injuries. We as a society overreact to everything and that is what is currently happening with concussions. Just because a few players had problems, doesn't mean every player has issues. And, again, I'm not trying to say the game shouldn't change, but these are all men who can make decisions for themselves. They all know the repercussions of playing in this game, they shouldn't be treated like babies on the field.

I think calling it a "bad rule" doesn't even come close to doing it justice as to how ridiculously poor of a rule it is. It's made the game hard to watch for people like me. The NFL needs to realize their fan base won't tolerate touch football.

damn straight. if the qb doesn't slide before he comes within 2 yards of a defender he should be fair game. ridiculous that a defender should be penalised for a qb sliding late. i didn't hear one media clown say teddy slid too late and put himself in danger. what on earth are they watching?

Teddy starting his slide.

Teddy in his slide. At this point he would be ruled down because he is sliding feet first and his knee is down. Now, does Joyner have time to stop his actions? I don't know. This is were the ball was spotted after the play and before the penalty, the 24 yard line.

But this is why it was called.

Personally, I think he was trying not to hit him, hence his arm is tucked in.

BTW, if you look at the photos' I posted, Teddy started his slide 5 yards from Joyner. Want to stick with your 2 yard rule?

It looks more like 3 yards but point taken. However, notice how Joyner is a blur in that shot? No way he can stop. Maybe they should set the slide at 5 yards away from a defender so this can't happen again.

The other thing I see is he rolls the left shoulder away from him. If you really wanna hit somebody hard go in with both shoulders moving towards them. By rolling the left shoulder away he's moving the force of the contact away from Teddy.

That first pic in there looks around 3 yards just by my eyes, which are ok I just can't hear a damned thing, and with these guys moving at full speed 3 or 4 or even 5 yards isn't a whole lotta room. Especially if Teddy doesn't see Joyner right away as I think he was looking at Jenkins the majority of the run but he was fighting off a block from a WR. I'm not saying this as an excuse and I would criticize the rule and Foles if it was him. But while the rule to protect QB's is good it's also flawed in a way. If a QB is trying to get a first down they're going to wait for the slide as long as you can, unless your Johnny Manziel on 4th and 6 he slides at 4 yards. The longer the QB's hold on to the ball the more defensive players are going to gravitate to the play and the more likely they'll get hit like this. Again I'm not defending Joyner I'd criticize Foles the same way, just saying it's a flaw in the protection rule that kind of sucks because they're putting themselves at risk or they're likely coming up short of a first down.

Per ESPN: No suspension for Joyner. Penalty still possible. Bridgewater likely to play Sunday.
Good news all around. Hopefully everyone outside of Rams/Vikings Nation can just STFU about it and move on.

Yeah, obviously it wasn't as bad as everyone made it out to be. If Bridgewater was had a true concussion he's still be going through the protocols. He faked being knocked out. I guess you could say it was good job of selling it. If the ref wasn't thinking about throwing a flag that did it. If he woulda acted all tough guy and bounce up to show it didn't bother him maybe they don't throw a flag.
