Personally I think the Rams have a good DC now. This guy could be another McVay like coaching talent, smart, well liked by the players and creative. It's why I've been contending that his experience with Phillips, Staley and Morris will serve him well and is an advantage.

Hopefully, he can keep Pleasant by adding assist DC to his title. Regardless I'm feeling good about Shula and think this year's team could be very good on both sides of the ball.

He’s been groomed the last few seasons by play calling in the preseason with Eric Henderson.
He’s helped in all areas on defense moving around. The funny thing is no Rams defensive coaches have really been poached. Getting Aubrey back as an assistant coach really helped settle the defensive back group.

Shula being the LBers coach & working with Ernest Jones who was the green dot really helped keep him involved in the game calling game planning sort of like being the OC to Mcvay, but on defense.

I would take a bet that McVay has had a larger number of coaches leave in one off-season.

I got curious, so I checked ... there are sites and databases for everything now.

Just last off-season (2023) there were Ten Rams' coaches that left McVay's staff.
Now some were let go; and it's still early in the off-season.

Also think the quality and level of the coach leaving is far more important than the number that leaves.
Yes - I go to training camps & can make a case that The Changes made this offseason could be beneficial across the board.

Your right about last season’s coaching staff changes which makes this offseason even better in the development of players and coaching staff.

Yes a guy like Zac Robinson will be missed, but the coaches under him & or players The Rams set in place make it actually better that he is gone.

I say that really if a player like Carson Wentz comes back as The Rams backup QB. Carson picked Zac Robinson’s brain, but you add
Peetz & Lafluer with Stafford & Wentz & there is so much knowledge & game planning for 2024 it’s unbelievable with Mcvay.
Adding John strecier is a Lafluer guy that brings good knowledge to The Rams.

And, another (relatively minor) hire was just reported ... John Streicher, formerly with the Titans was hired with the interesting title of Coordinator of Football Strategy. Don't exactly know what that is but ... OK.
Believe I made a mistake in referring to the above hire as "relatively minor".

Should have done research before posting. @CGI_Ram and @Selassie I have been yelling at me for hours.

This John Streicher guy is apparently a well-regarded, young, analytical mind that could be in McVay's ear on game-day regarding important in-game-management decisions. Seems like a quality hire.

And, to be clear, it's not this guy ...
1708001094066.png

... Ted Stryker from Airplane

Totally different guy. @Loyal insisted I make that clear.

Damn It!

Rams lost another coach ...
Pass Game Specialist Jake Peetz to Seattle where he will be the Pass Game Coordinator.

Peetz interviewed with Tampa for Offensive Coordinator. When he did not get it, thought he would return.

Not sure is Pass Game Coordinator is technically a bump-Up from Pass Game Specialist. If not, and it's viewed more as a lateral hire, then guessing McVay had to give his OK.

Still, it's another coaching staff loss.

I'd rather see Ratboy add someone other than Staley. Don't want those two together.
More I think about it, not sure it's a great fit. They run more of a Seattle/Cover-3 system and moving to a Fangio system would be a departure from what they do and what their guys are best at. Maybe Staley comes on and runs more S/C but seems like it would be undercutting what the players do extremely well by changing to a Fangio system.

WOW - that stinks. I was thinking he was going to be solid replacement for Zac Robinson.

The problem I had with Raheem was how he didn't play to his roster's strength.

If you are going to play a relatively passive secondary, in a cover 2 or cover 3, and play a Fangio style front 7 you aren't going to get much QB pressure. We saw that even in 2021. Raheem had to switch to a one gap front and play more aggressively with his secondary to get stops. That legitimately raised the question of why not play that way on every down.

The key to a Fangio front is having a legitimate 2 gap NT. The Rams used Turner and Brown who both are better suited to play a IT, not a 0T. This DL roster can get pressure more frequently by playing a one gap penetration style scheme. It's how Donald and Turner are best played. All this "reading" slows the DL down and takes away their aggression. Turn the dogs loose on every down. Don't concede early down passing by focusing on stopping an assumed early down run play on every series.

The reason I can see them not focusing upon an Edge early in this draft is because I think we will see Donald playing Edge more often. I think Turner has proved he can be a very good 3T. This will give them a front of Donald, Brown, Turner, and Young. That's a pretty good front if you play a one gap scheme. Relying upon Jones and whoever they decide to play next to him on covering the inside gaps should be enough to control early down inside runs. It wouldn't surprise me if they moved Mathis, Desjuan Johnson or Hoecht to ILB. All three IMO play better inside than outside. They would bring size and strength inside. I like Rozeboom but IMO he's a good rotational talent not a starting ILB. They need more "beef" inside next to Jones. Mathis showed he can play well inside, especially as an early down run stopper in college.

I can see Donald becoming more situational in how he's used this season.

They should draft a CB on the second day but sign Witherspoon to be a bridge starter for a year or two. They have their two starting safeties in Lake and Yeast but they will need depth as they probably don't extend Fuller.

DK's actual long speed looks to be closer to 4.6 but that is too slow to play boundary CB. If they want to move him to a #3 safety he would have value there in a zone concept where he can play downhill most of the time. Especially on a compressed field when they are backed up inside the red zone.

Shelley was played outside at times under Morris. IMO he's strictly a SCB and in that role he's probably their best option. This year will be a make or break year for Durant. He needs to show more consistency in his technique growth. He has the athleticism to be a good boundary CB. Tomlinson is too undersized to play boundary. His best bet to being one of the primary CBs would be to learn from Shelley how to play SCB which in reality is the toughest of all 3 CB positions to play.

Shula has a good core of talent to build upon. He simply needs to do a better job than Morris in identifying their strengths and playing to them. Not everyone is plug-n-play where you need them. Play to their strengths and in doing so you maximize their usage. Again I don't care what base scheme they play as long as it's played aggressively no matter what the field position is. Every time the defense forces a punt that is stealing a possession for the offense. That is how you win consistently with this team. The Ram offense has shown it can be very good and with Sean's improved scheme, he can better control the flow and in doing so the clock.

Donald is iffy on the contain. He's fine for a third down option as an outside rush threat but there's a reason he's a 3T. Also as he ages his likelihood of survival out on the edge gets worse.

For his role in 2024 I would have AD functioning primarily as a third down rusher wherever he gets the best matchup. Turner has good 3T skills and power for early downs so I'd utilize him in that run stopper role and add a young rotation type in the draft to this DL group. And somewhere in this offseason there has to be an edge added.

At the very least I'd make sure I add one edge and one DL for the rotation. Preferably in the 5T or 1T mold but one more good rotation piece would help a lot. Main thing I'd want is early down run stuffing strength which means it doesn't have to be a higher pick. Reserve those for the edge and corner, and maybe a wideout toy or a backup LT for the offense.

Either they are waiting to make announcements once complete or McVay is really taking his time filling out this staff. I hope he's not having trouble finding the right fits. Not sure what connections Shula might have for the defensive side of the ball.

I’m just upset at some of the losses The Rams have right now.
There’s a lot of good coaches The Rams have lost this offseason.

Having Mike LaFleur back & Aubrey Pleasant back is huge though.Chris Shula has earned the right to be the DC.

Sean Mcvay’s growth as a HC & his mind set is as good as its ever been. He’s trusting his assistants more than ever.Having Raheem Morris was sort of a blessing. The downside is when he left he poached so many of The Rams young quality coaches.
Getting draft picks for him was a vision I had when he became The Rams DC.He took a beating, especially The Rams Super Bowl year(losers).

There is enough reason to believe Sean Mcvay will get it right. He doesn’t settle & actually last year he brought some excellent coaches we haven’t talked about or brought up.

Add there is another coach who is on the staff like Shula from day 1 that NEVER gets talked about & actually was the TE’s coach at the end of 2022.I’ll be keeping an eye on what happens, but could see him as a possible Run Game coach ?

The RB’s coach Ron Gould imo really was a solid find by Sean Mcvay when Ram Fans started to panic a bit when a RB’s coach turned him down for a lesser job for a college team.

I think (but I also forget things now) that, while hirings get leaked and reported via media sources, the Rams (in recent years) have waited and announced the majority of the hirings at one time.

With the Combine less than two weeks away; and Free Agency just a little over three weeks away, my guess would be that most of the important hires are in-place or being finalized.

I'm done worrying about his assistant coaches. He's hired 51 assistant coaches (prior to this off season) not counting strength and conditioning coaches, and the guy wins with all of them. He's had 6 guys go on to head coaching positions (5 NFL, 1 NCAA) and 10 others go on to coordinator positions (9 NFL, 1 NCAA). In 7 years as a head coach!!

They also do that, they make the announcements all at once. You get a few trickle in like with the new DL Coach in Assistant Special Teams, but the Rams always like to have one announcement of the coaching staff every year.

I saw this a couple of days ago.....from SB Nation

"There has been a lot of coaching news in the NFC West this week. Not only are the Seattle Seahawks rebuilding the staff from top-to-bottom under Pete Carroll successor Mike Macdonald, but the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams have a lot of work left to do too. The 49ers fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, necessitating a change at arguably the second-most important coaching job on the entire team, while the Rams lost yet another assistant coach to a promotion within the league.

For the second time in three years, the Seahawks poached an offensive assistant to help call plays in Seattle.

There’s no doubt about it: Not only does McVay have the Super Bowl championship that Shanahan craves and can’t achieve, he’s also doing a lot more for his assistants and for that reason will likely continue to outbid his divisional buddy for the top candidates. They know it, we know it, it is far better to get a job with the Rams under McVay than to get a job with the Niners under Shanahan.

As I wrote before the Super Bowl, McVay’s coaching tree is ridiculously more expansive than Shanahan’s

Shanahan's head coaching tree: Robert Saleh (Jets), Mike McDaniel (Dolphins), DeMeco Ryans (Texans)

McVay’s head coaching tree: Matt LaFleur (Packers), Zac Taylor (Bengals), Brandon Staley (Chargers*), Kevin O’Connell (Vikings), Raheem Morris (Falcons)

Then there’s coordinators:

Shanahan’s coordinator tree: Mike LaFleur (Rams OC), Bobby Slowik (Texans OC), Klint Kubiak (Saints OC)

McVay’s coordinator tree: Joe Barry (Packers DC*), Ejiro Evero (Panthers DC), Shane Waldron (Bears OC), Liam Coen (Bucs OC), Wes Phillips (Vikings OC), Thomas Brown (Bears passing game coordinator), Jimmy Lake (Falcons DC), Zac Robinson (Falcons OC), Jake Peetz (Seahawks passing game coordinator), Jeremy Springer (Patriots special teams coordinator)

McVay’s tree grows so quick, I may have even missed a name in there somewhere.

Yes, there are times when McVay has to move on from a coach, which was the case a year ago after L.A. struggled to the tune of 5-12. He fired offensive coordinator Liam Coen, offensive line coach Kevin Carberry, special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis, and running backs coach Ra’Shaad Samples, among others.

And yet, one year later, Coen is back in the NFL set to call plays with the Buccaneers in their hopes to retain Baker Mayfield at quarterback. Carberry is now Tampa Bay’s offensive line coach.

And their replacements, like offensive line coach Ryan Wendell, seem to be quick on the rise. Wendell seems to be the best pickup of 2023 as the offensive line vastly surpassed expectations, but then you can’t discount the impact that Mike LaFleur has had on the offense since replacing Coen and he could be the next to become a head coach. (Although technically he would be off of both trees.)

Open coaching jobs on the Rams right now would include quarterbacks, passing game coordinator, linebackers, and then McVay has some options including assistant head coach, run game coordinator, and various assistants at certain positions. Where would you want to be, under McVay where coaches keep getting promoted or under Shanahan right after he fired a defensive coordinator who had a reasonably good defense.

(I don’t want to imply that Steve Wilks was the third-best defensive coordinator in the NFL just because the 49ers ranked third in points allowed because that’s not fair, but coaches are certainly going to look at that and wonder if he did as good of a job as anyone could have.)

Going 12-5 and being considered the most complete team in the NFC, if not the NFL, the 49ers had zero coaches promoted to head coach in the NFL. In fact, Wilks and assistant head coach Anthony Lynn barely had a look during the interviews. Shanahan is solely credited for offensive success. Kubiak was the only assistant promoted. Quarterbacks coach Brian Griese only got looked at by a couple of teams and wasn’t promoted anywhere.

Meanwhile, the Rams went a respectable and surprising 10-7, were knocked out in the wild card round by the Lions, but produced a head coach (Morris), four new coordinators (Lake, Robinson, Peetz, Springer), Eric Henderson became the co-defensive coordinator at USC, and technically Chris Shula became a defensive coordinator too because McVay promoted him to replace Morris.

McVay or Shanahan?

Whether measuring by Super Bowl wins or coaching wins, there can only be one obvious answer."

>>>>>>FWIW, he left out Thomas Brown, who was hired as Carolina's OC last off season. And Jedd Fisch who was head coach at U of Arizona, now U of Washington.
