Jaguars release second-year QB Brandon Allen

The Jacksonville Jaguars cut a quarterback.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported Sunday that the Jags cut second-year signal-caller Brandon Allen.

The move comes after Jacksonville added five players from the waiver wire, including tight end James O'Shaughnessy from New England.

Cutting Allen is slightly surprising given the Jags quarterback quandary. There was some scuttle this offseason that Allen could get a shot at the starting gig if Blake Bortles and Chad Hennebomb. Allen showed flashes in the preseason, including a 43-yard touchdown strike to receiver Dede Westbrook. His three-interception performance in the preseason finale, however, displayed the limitations of the second-year quarterback.

As Garafolo notes, the Jags waiting a day to cut Allen could be a maneuver to sneak him onto the practice squad. The 24-year-old must pass through waivers first.

NFL analyst explains why former Arkansas QB Brandon Allen could be draft stALAL ELMASRY | 1 R one year AGO
Regardless of his hand size or what he’s trying to do to make them bigger, quarterback Brandon Allen played big at Arkansas.

His play certainly caught the attention of NFL analyst Daniel Jeremiah, who spoke in detail about what Allen showed with the Razorbacks.

Jeremiah was asked who the best quarterback not named Jared Goff or Carson Wentz will be in this year’s NFL Draft, and he gave the nod to Allen.

“He has some games where you see him work quickly through progressions, make NFL reads, NFL throws. He’s got great feet inside the pocket, and I like the fact that he’s been through some adversity in his career and he’s come out the other side of it.”

Allen led the SEC last season in QB rating (166.5) and yards per attempt (9.3) while ranking 2nd in passing touchdowns (30) and completing 65.9 percent of his passes.

So basically if Goff screws the pooch this season this guy will be taking his job...Usually you don't bring someone in who may be better than our current #1 unless there is doubt.

Interesting pickup. So long Orlovski. (Sp?) I like that they are keeping the QB room competitive.

Every team needs to be 3 deep at QB and I am glad they went another route.

Or ... that Mannion may become trade fodder next year and Allen could become the next developmental QB for the team to grow. jmo.

I think Mcvay is gonna find his QB come hell or high water....he will not be held captive by poor QB play...he will go down swinging...

I like this a lot. I guess they wanted a qb with smaller hands than Goff. Haha

This could be nothing, or it could indicate that the current staff thinks Allen is a better fit for the system than Mannion.

I think it's about improving the roster - ideally, an organization should want to have 3 QBs. We have certainly seen years where they drop quickly - and we have also seen them become uber valuable trade bait.

I like this move. The kid can thread the needle and no happy feet. This could be trade bait for Mannion. He looks at least as good as Goff.... Just sayin'

Yeah I don't think this has any bearing of Goff or Mannion. I think it was an opportunity to bring in a young developmental third string QB with upside.
