Game Day Thread

The GDT is a live thread tradition here at ROD.

While we all get fired up watching the game, please remember our core principles; we always show respect for our team and each other.

Despite the emotional highs and lows watching a game, we will moderate this thread with that in mind, however please refrain from name calling. This applies to players, the Rams organization, and others.

This is the core rule of the GDT. Moderators are tasked to issue thread bans, at a minimum, to maintain this standard.

This is our team. Win or lose. Good days and bad.

Go Rams!

Please be advised moderators may issue “caution” post ratings to keep this thread on track. If you see this, don’t freak out; these are not warnings but meant to steer conversation away from warnings.

Our goal... watching a game is fun. So, let’s have fun in here.

Los Angeles Rams vs. Arizona Cardinals

The Los Angeles Rams will look to get back on the track on the road when they take on the Arizona Cardinals Sunday afternoon. Los Angeles pounded the Cards back in September at home 34-0 in a game that saw Sam Bradford under center for the road team and Todd Gurley running for three touchdowns. Jared Goff also looked really good, throwing for 354 yards in the victory. The Rams have won four of their last five in the series including 32-16 at Arizona in 2017.

Los Angeles (11-3) has to be a little shell-shocked right now coming off losses to the Bears and Eagles, which happened for two different reasons. The team only managed six points in the loss at Chicago putting up just over 200 yards of offense to go with four turnovers. The defense sprung a few leaks on the ground in that one whereas the secondary was beaten a lot by the Eagles last week. Gurley has not been as effective as of late and is now dealing with a knee injury although he should be able to play. Sean McVay has the challenge of trying to get his guys to believe in themselves again.

Arizona (3-11) has lost two straight and five of six as the Cardinals are getting ready for the offseason. Could their head coach be a potential one-and-done with the team? Josh Rosen, predictably, is having some up-and-down moments this season. The Cardinals made a change at offensive coordinator earlier in the season, which briefly helped. The defense has actually played well in spurts, holding the Packers and Lions to 17 points apiece in the two weeks before they gave up 40 to the Falcons in Atlanta last Sunday. Can the veterans on this team muster up one more solid performance in front of the home crowd?

Los Angeles at Arizona

Kickoff: Sunday, Dec. 23 at 4:05 p.m. ET
TV: FOX
Spread: Rams -14

Three Things to Watch

1. Intangibles

Even though we are getting towards the end of the regular season, there are still potentially situational things to look at in each matchup. The Rams probably would have slept walked through this game if they hadn't lost their previous two. Now I think you'll get a solid effort from them. There is technically still a small shot to get the No. 1 seed in the NFC as they are just a game behind the Saints, but New Orleans owns the head-to-head tiebreaker. Los Angeles also needs to hold off the Bears for the second seed, which comes with a first-round bye. Chicago has won straight, including a victory over the Rams, and is playing well. The Cardinals have the worst record in the NFC and are tied for the worst in the NFL with the Raiders. I don't think they are tanking so I look for them to put forth a good effort at home for the final time this season.

2. What has happened to the Rams' Pro Bowlers?

Turnovers have become a major issue for the Rams, who have had two or more in four straight contests. During this current losing streak, they've coughed it up seven times against the Bears and Eagles. Jared Goff, in particular, has been emblematic of the struggles. The Pro Bowl quarterback has just one touchdown pass in his last three games compared to seven interceptions. But it goes beyond the mistakes as he has completed just 55 percent of his attempts and has posted a 51.3 QB rating during this span. It's not like Todd Gurley is blameless either as he's managed just 76 rushing yards from his last 23 carries. He's expected to suit up as he deals with knee inflammation. Gurley has been held to less than 60 yards of offense in three of the last four games. If the Rams don't go crazy in this one then the fan base will get majorly worried considering the potential the team has.

3. Defense optional

When the Rams signed Ndamukong Suh, the national pundits branded this as one of the best defenses in the NFL. Suh has been solid this season with 51 tackles and 3.5 sacks, but he's also freed some stuff up for Aaron Donald, who leads the league with 16.5 sacks. There's no question that the front four has lived up to the hype, but cornerbacks Marcus Peters and Aquib Talib have been massive disappointments it seems. Talib has been injured, so he's got a little bit of an excuse, but once again a lot more was expected. The Cardinals have scored just 47 points over their last four games and don't have a good offensive line. Donald and Suh should be able to eat in this one.

On the opposite side, the Cardinals' defense is hard to figure out. They held the Lions to just 96 passing yards at home two weeks ago then proceeded to get gashed by the Falcons on the road. Arizona is allowing almost 145 rushing yards per game and 26.2 points per contest. The building blocks are there with Budda Baker and Antoine Bethea forming a solid safety pair while Patrick Peterson is still locking things down at one cornerback spot. I really like Haason Reddick, who has 63 tackles and three sacks on the year. The front line has Chandler Jones and his 12 sacks. Pass protection has been an issue recently for Los Angeles, as Goff has been sacked 11 times in the last four games.

Final Analysis

This one should get ugly. The only worry is if the Rams take their foot off the pedal towards the end as they rest their players for a bigger prize. Arizona just doesn't have the talent and the Rams are going to be an angry bunch. Jared Goff silences the critics if only for one week with a solid bounce-back performance.

Prediction: Rams 35, Cardinals 13

Game Preview: Rams Look to Sweep Cardinals, End Losing Streak

The Rams lost back-to-back games for the first time under head coach Sean McVay in their pair of late-season of primetime matchups and now it’s back to the NFC West for the final two games of the season.

With still much to be played for, the Rams will look to get back on track against the Cardinals in Arizona on Sunday. The Rams handled the Cardinals 34-0 back in Week 2 with a dominant defensive performance, limiting quarterback Sam Bradford’s offense to just 137 total yards.

Running back Todd Gurley scored three touchdowns in the second game of the season and converted a pair of two-point conversions without kicker Greg Zuerlein. The Rams finished the game 3-for-3 converting for two points and punter Johnny Hekker hit a 20-yard field goal in the win.

There’s an increased sense of urgency from players to coaches as they head to the desert looking to sweep the 3-11 Cardinals, halt the losing streak, and get one win closer to a first-round playoff bye.

“We’re good, we just need to get back on track, get back doing what we need to do and this is a good week to do it,” defensive tackle Aaron Donald said.

"Yeah, for sure,” running back Todd Gurley said. “Definitely make you want to play, for sure, just being what we've done the last two games, which was nothing. So, we've got to get it together."

“I know there's an increased sense of urgency from us as coaches,” McVay said this week. “I sense that from the players. Very business-like is probably the best way that I would describe what the feel is around here. People are positive. Nobody's looking down, but I think there's a serious approach to, we've got to get some work done, we've got to find a way to get better and prepare to try to go win a football game this Sunday."

The Rams have not looked themselves in a lot of ways since the Week 12 bye, and that includes the play of Donald, Gurley, and quarterback Jared Goff. Donald has posted consecutive games without a sack for the first time since Weeks 2 and 3. Gurley returned to the end zone for the first time since Detroit last Sunday, but rushed for just 48 yards while in and out of the game dealing with a knee issue. And since Week 14, Goff has completed just 56 percent of his passes for 519 yards with no touchdowns and five interceptions.

On Thursday, McVay identified what’s been up with the 11-3 NFC West Champion Rams.

“We're not taking as good of care of the football. We've got to do that,” McVay said. “When we do get the turnovers, we've got to be able to turn those into points — and not just field goals, but touchdowns. Then, we've got to avoid the negative plays and we've got to create them on defense.”

McVay said the Rams have been in games they could have lost all season, pointing to his team’s Week 8 win over the Packers, saying a lot went wrong then, but his Rams were able to make the opportune plays when it mattered most. Against Green Bay, there was the forced safety by linebacker Mark Barron, a gutsy performance from Gurley, and a huge forced takeaway in crunch-time from linebacker Ramik Wilson.

The focus is now on beating the Cardinals and rookie quarterback Josh Rosen. Rosen has thrown four more interceptions than touchdowns in his first season as a pro, with his team sitting at No. 32 in passing yards per game (160.8). Rosen has not thrown a touchdown pass since Week 12 and leads the league with four pick-sixes thrown this season.

Despite an up and down debut season, defensive coordinator Wade Phillips sees ability in the young quarterback.

“He's got the quick arm,” Phillips said. “He can avoid the rush pretty well, he can run with it but he doesn't run with it a whole lot. He's athletic and he's thrown the ball, I think, really well inside the 20-yard line. He's thrown the ball really well in that area where you have to make sharp, quick throws and accurate throws.”

A pair of veteran playmakers lead the Cardinals on offense. Running back David Johnson and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald account for 14 of the club’s 22 offensive touchdowns in 2018. Johnson is knocking on the 1,000-yard mark as a rusher in his comeback season, and Fitzgerald’s been himself, totalling 645 yards in his 15th season.

“He can do it all, he can run hard, make you miss, he can catch the ball out of the backfield and make a lot of things happen,” Donald said, providing his take on Johnson, who led the league in yards from scrimmage and total touchdowns in 2016.

“Larry is a Hall of Famer, man — What else are you going to see form him?” cornerback Marcus Peters said this week. “He’s a Hall of Famer. I think whenever he is done his gold jacket is coming soon.”

In addition to Rosen, Johnson, and Fitzgerald, the Rams will attack an Arizona defense led by a few formidable playmakers. Defensive end Chandler Jones has 12.0 sacks in 2018. Plus the combination of safety Tre Boston and cornerback Patrick Peterson with their five combined picks have played a big part in limiting offenses to 211.5 yards passing per game this season.

The Cardinals offer one of the worst run defenses in the league, allowing 144.6 yards per game on the ground, which leads to the biggest question out of Thousand Oaks, Calif. this week — the availability of running back Todd Gurley.

"We've got a game to win,” Gurley said on Thursday. “I'm pretty sure me being out there — if I can be out there — I would put this team in a good position to help them win. So, why wouldn't I be out there if I can play?”

Gurley is yet to practice this week and said candidly on Thursday that he doesn’t plan to practice readying for the Cardinals. Nonetheless, McVay said barring anything that could be detrimental to his star running back’s health, he expects to see No. 30 on the field in Arizona.

But just in case, the Rams signed veteran running back C.J. Anderson early in the week. With backup running backs Malcolm Brown out for the season and Justin Davis day-to-day, Anderson will be looked to in the second running back spot. The proven back rushed for 1,000 yards last season in Denver, has a Super Bowl 50 ring, and is picking things up quickly in McVay’s offense.

The head coach said he expects Anderson to be ready to play come Sunday.

“Whatever they need me to do,” Anderson said. “I know I’m going to do everything that I possibly can this week to be ready to play. McVay and teammates and everybody can feel comfortable with me out there if that opportunity presents itself. But until then I’m just going to keep my head down and keep pushing.”

The Rams can lock up a first-round playoff bye this week with a win and Bears loss. The No. 1 seed and home field advantage throughout the payoffs is becoming more and more unlikely, but is not out of the realm of possibility for McVay and company.

McVay said it’s been a challenge facing adversity in what is now the only losing streak in his L.A. tenure.

Goff says that although there is no reason to panic yet in the Rams locker room, there is a new sense urgency in the two-game losing streak and learning experience over the last few weeks.

And the team’s 71-year-old defensive coordinator, with his 41-years of experience in 16 different professional football coaching jobs, opened his Thursday press conference confident that things will be OK.

“First of all, the sky's not falling,” defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said on Thursday. “Our record is what it is, it's one of the better. We want to make it better by winning this ball game this week.”

The Rams and Cardinals kickoff from State Farm Stadium in Phoenix at 1:05 pacific.

How about a lot less mistakes to start with. It's about time this team comes out with energy and focus on both sides of the ball. Don't take your foot off the gas and crush the Cardinals from the beginning.

If they are going to give you the short passes take them and be patient.

It's nice to be a spot when a two game losing streak is a panic inducing crisis and not just business as usual.

Rams vs. Cardinals: 5 key matchups to watch
By: Cameron DaSilva

After sweeping the Cardinals easily in 2017, the Los Angeles Rams are looking to do the same this season in their final matchup with Arizona on Sunday. They shut out the Cardinals 34-0 in Week 2 and have outscored them 99-16 in their last three games.

As 14-point underdogs, the Cardinals don’t have much of a chance to pull off the upset, but the same was said about the Eagles last week. In the NFL, anything can happen.

Here are five key matchups between the Rams and Cardinals heading into Week 16.

Andrew Whitworth vs. Chandler Jones
Jones has been a thorn in the side of the Rams since he came to the NFC West in 2016, recording 5.5 sacks in just six games against L.A. He had at least one sack in each of his first four games against the Rams – five games if you go back to 2012 when they were in St. Louis – so he’s always played this team well.

That streak ended in Week 2 when he was blanked by Whitworth, who will once again draw the assignment of blocking the 2017 sack leader. Jones has 12 sacks this season but Whitworth is one of the best pass blockers in the league. With all the pressure the Rams have allowed in recent weeks, keeping Jones off Jared Goff will be crucial.

Ndamukong Suh vs. Mason Cole
There’s no doubt about where the Cardinals like to go when running the ball: right up the middle. More than 60 percent of their runs this season have gone up the middle, which is where Suh and Cole will be battling it out. Suh hasn’t had a single tackle for loss since Week 5 and only has a half-sack in his last nine games, so he’s hardly had an impact lately.

Given the frequency with which the Cardinals run behind their guards, Suh has to get off blocks and be that run stuffer the Rams expected him to be at nose tackle. Limiting David Johnson’s success on the ground will force the Cardinals to throw the ball, which won’t lead to much success.

Jared Goff vs. Patrick Peterson
This isn’t your typical wide receiver-cornerback matchup, but Goff is in the midst of his worst stretch of games since 2016, and now he’s facing one of the best ball hawks in the league. With his accuracy dwindling and confidence throwing downfield seemingly gone, don’t expect Goff to take many shots in Peterson’s direction.

Whether it’s Brandin Cooks, Robert Woods or Josh Reynolds being covered by Peterson remains to be seen – the Cardinals deploy him differently each week – but whoever is on the Pro Bowler’s side of the field is unlikely to see many passes come his way.

Nickell Robey-Coleman vs. Larry Fitzgerald
Aside from Johnson, Fitzgerald is really the Cardinals’ only offensive threat. Primarily playing in the slot, he doesn’t create many explosive plays – he has just nine catches of 20-plus yards – but he’s someone who can rack up yardage with a high volume of targets. Robey-Coleman has been the Rams’ best cornerback this season, and assuming they use their nickel package for most of Sunday’s game, he should see plenty of Fitzgerald in his area.

So long as the Rams don’t let Fitzgerald have a huge game, they should be in good shape. Josh Rosen trusts him more than any other receiver, so when you take away a quarterback’s favorite target, good things happen on defense.

Cory Littleton vs. David Johnson
Although he hasn’t been the receiving threat he was two years ago, Johnson is still a playmaker out of the backfield – whether he’s running routes or taking handoffs. Littleton will be asked to cover Johnson more than once on screens, wheel routes or checkdowns, so limiting his yards after the catch is essential. Johnson has 12 receptions of at least 15 yards this season, so he’s good for about one big play per game.

Littleton has struggled to get off blocks in recent weeks and tends to guess on which gap the running back is going through, leading to long runs. That simply can’t happen on Sunday.

5 things to know about Rams vs. Cardinals
By: Cameron DaSilva

With two straight losses under their belt, the Los Angeles Rams are looking to rebound in Week 16. Fortunately, they’re getting the worst team in the NFL next, traveling to Arizona for a meeting with the 3-11 Cardinals.

Arizona has struggled all season, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. Josh Rosen has looked similar to the 2016 version of Jared Goff, getting absolutely no help from his supporting cast.

David Johnson is hardly a threat in Arizona’s new-look offense, putting together the worst season of his career.

Here are five stats and facts to know about the Cardinals heading into Week 16.

60 percent of Cardinals’ runs go up the middle, which is where Rams are worst
Under Steve Wilks and a new coaching staff, David Johnson has looked like a below-average running back. He’s averaging 3.6 yards per carry and only has 843 yards on the ground this season, though it’s not all his fault. The offensive line has been terrible and the majority of his runs are straight up the gut, inexplicably going away from his skill as an outside runner.

Of the Cardinals’ 313 rush attempts this season, 183 have gone up the middle (60.4 percent), according to NFL game stats. That’s the second-most in the league, averaging 3.89 yards per attempt (20th). It’s an ugly trend for Arizona, but one that could work against the Rams.

Los Angeles allows 5.37 yards per carry up the middle on 123 attempts, which is the second-worst average in the NFL. That’s baffling when you consider they have Ndamukong Suh and Aaron Donald in the middle.

Cardinals rank last in nearly every offensive category

Cardinals fans are well aware of how bad Arizona’s offense has been this season, but the stats are truly shocking. Here are all the categories in which the Cardinals rank dead last in the NFL:

  • Points (192)
  • Yards (3,404)
  • Passing yards (2,251)
  • Rushing yards (1,153)
  • Yards per carry (3.7)
  • Scoring percentage (18.2 percent of drives)
  • Yards per play (4.34)
  • 1st downs per game (15.1)
  • 3rd-down percentage (30.4 percent)
  • Time of possession (26:30)
It’s been a terrible season on that side of the ball for Arizona, and while the defense hasn’t been nearly as bad, it still isn’t great. This is the perfect game for the Rams’ defense to get on track.

Rams have outscored Cardinals 99-16 under Sean McVay
Sean McVay has dominated the Cardinals since joining the Rams, to the point where it’s surprising no one has changed his Wikipedia page to say “Arizona Cardinals owner.” The Rams are 3-0 against Arizona since the start of 2017, outscoring the Cardinals 99-16.

They’ve scored at least 32 points in each of those three games and have shut out the Cardinals twice: 34-0 this year and 33-0 in Week 7 last year. The Rams may not be playing well right now, but that’s nothing a meeting with the Cardinals can’t cure.

Todd Gurley only has one fewer TD than Cardinals
Arizona has scored 22 offensive touchdowns this season, which is the third-fewest in the NFL, just one more than the Jaguars and Bills. On his own, Gurley has scored 21 touchdowns to lead the league, nearly outscoring the entire Cardinals offense by himself.

Nine of the Cardinals 22 offensive touchdowns have come on the ground compared to Gurley’s 17, while their 13 touchdown passes are far more than Todd’s four scores as a receiver. It’s incredible that he’s even as close to the Cardinals as he is, though.

Cardinals have 56 more punts than Johnny Hekker this season

Hekker has only attempted 38 punts this season, which is the second-fewest in the NFL, only more than the Saints (35). Andy Lee of the Cardinals, on the other hand, leads the league with a whopping 84 punts – seven more than any other team.

If you combine Hekker’s last two seasons, he has 103 punts in 30 games compared to 84 punts by the Cardinals in 14 games this season.

John Sullivan needs to step up in this game, he's been pushed around the last two games including stepping on Goff's foot that led to a ludicrous turnover. If Gurley does not play, the OL needs to be the difference for Anderson and to provide time for Goff, in order for Goff to get his timing back.

No excuses today, the Cardinals are the worst team in the NFL, with a Head Coach that will be a one and done and I would not be shocked if the Cardinals have a total house cleaning including their GM Steve Keim, so let's take care of business today.

The Full NFC Playoff Picture

Saints (12-2): The NFC South is clinched. One win in their final two games — at home vs. the Steelers and Panthers — locks down the No. 1 seed. Losses by the Bears and Rams on Sunday also would deliver the top seed, even if the Saints lose. The Saints could still squander a first-round bye, by losing twice while the Rams and Bears win out.

Rams (11-3): They’ve won the NFC West, but nothing more. The Rams need to win twice and hope the Saints lose twice to land the No. 1 seed. A first-round bye also requires a pair of season-ending wins (at Cardinals, home vs. 49ers), since the 10-4 Bears hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Rams. One or two losses by the Bears (at 49ers, at Vikings) would make that path easier.

Bears (10-4): After winning their first NFC North title since 2010, the Bears can still climb the ladder, all the way to the top. Two wins (at 49ers and at Vikings) and one Rams loss would give Chicago the No. 2 seed. Two wins, one Rams loss, and two Saints losses would give the Bears home-field advantage throughout the postseason.

Cowboys (8-6): They’ll clinch the NFC East with a win over the Buccaneers, or with a loss by the Eagles to the Texans. Two wins (Bucs, at Giants) and two Bears losses would give the Cowboys the No. 3 seed.

Seahawks (8-6): A win in one of two final home games against the Chiefs and Cardinals will clinch a playoff berth. One loss could relegate the Seahawks to the No. 6 seed.

Vikings (7-6-1): With the Redskins losing on Saturday, the Vikings can clinch at least the sixth seed on Sunday by beating the Lions, if the Eagles lose to the Texans. A Vikings win and a Seattle loss to the Chiefs would move Minnesota to the No. 5 spot, pending Week 17.

Eagles (7-7): Two wins (vs. Texans, at the Redskins) plus a Vikings loss would give the Eagles the No. 6 seed. The fifth slot is also possible, but the Seahawks would have to lose twice for the Eagles to finish that high. The fourth seed, and the division title, can return to Philly if the Eagles win twice, and if the Cowboys lose to Tampa and the Giants.

Redskins(7-8): Barely alive after blowing a lead at Tennessee, the Redskins need to see the Eagles lose to the Texans or both the Vikings lose to the Lions and the Seahawks lose to the Chiefs. The Redskins can get in if the Vikings lose twice, if the Eagles lose to the Texans on Sunday, and if the Redskins beat the Eagles next Sunday. The Redskins also can get in if the Eagles lose today, Redskins beats the Eagles next Sunday, the Seahawks lose twice, and the Redskins secure the strength-of-victory tiebreaker.

Panthers (6-8): Carolina’s slim playoff hopes evaporate with one more loss or with one Minnesota win. The Panthers can finagle a berth if they win twice, if the Vikings lose twice, if the Eagles lose to the Texans this Sunday, and if the Eagles beat the Redskins next Sunday.

Rams need to come out angry.

Time for them to start punching teams in the mouth. No more rope-a-dope.

I wanna see some Joe Frazier football.

As much as I want to see Gurley have a great game, I am not so sure playing is the right thing for him to do. Unless it is just a pain tolerance thing I dont want to see Gurley do something that may cost him playoff action.

I would never play Gurley today. I don't even like these kinds of games. It seems like the only thing it accomplishes is injuring the best players. Crossing fingers the Rams get through it healthy.
