Here is my (humble) dose of reality and expectation. I expect Jared Goff to continue to develop. Peeps act like the legendary QB's of yesteryear never had horrible games. Look at Peyton Manning in the year they lost the SB to Seattle. Do I expect Jared Goff to become a legend? Idk, that's iffy. Maybe. More likely he could be in the hall of fame some day but not be in that super elite top tier conversation.
Equally as likely as above that he never progresses past what we see now—a streaky QB that has equal potential for greatness and mediocrity.
Listen, he is #2 in wins as a QB since 2017 behind only the goat. Now I understand that wins are more a team stat than individual one; however, one doesn't win that many games with a bad QB.
Ok, I'm glad that i got that out of the way. Now for the rest of the team.
Losing Big Whit. Ok, Noteboom has done a great job of pass protection with little to no drop off in production in that regard. I must ask, though, what makes Sean McVay's offense truly tick?
The run game. Almost everything that he does in the pass game is schematically based off of the success in the run game.
What have the Rams been noticeably worse at since Whits injury?
Running the ball!
I don't find it to be a coincidence, then, that Noteboom is not as good as Whit at run blocking. He can get there, hopefully.
Is that an excuse for Jared to have been so horrible at protecting the ball?
Emphatically, no.
I am saying that it is a factor in how well McVay has been able to scheme the passing game/the looks that Jared has gotten from the opposing D's.
McVay does not tell the receivers to just go get open and Goff to just go make it happen. It is a scheme reliant offense that works very well when it works, but is average at best when it doesn’t (no run game). Let us consider how well any QB or offense operates when they are made to be one dimensional.
Let us also consider that both the Bucs and the 9rs have championship caliber run defense.
Guys, can I paint the picture anymore clear?
Goff has to play fundamentally sound football. If he can at least be an effective game manager and avoid turning the ball over then he is a + at the position and this team goes deep into the playoffs.
The D is championship caliber. The jury is still out on the special teams due to the addition and good play of Gay. They are definitely not a strength anymore, but if Gay can keep it together then they are at least no longer a weakness.
Complete teams win the Superbowl.
