I'm on the fence with this he has shown the ability to score on defense which is huge. But he's also given up some big plays, was it miscommunication or is he getting burned.I would expect for him to play alot better this year with practically the whole defence coming back and in the same system for the 2nd straight year.So I would wait a few games in to see if he has learned or will he continue to be a feast or famine type cornerback.
I just think the communication between Fish/Snead/KD is really good with this regime and the coaches are likely telling KD to lock him up before we have to pay him top 5 money. Just a guess but if they see this happening and it saves us from losing another good player through cap casualty, I'm all for it.

You always struck me as being tolerant. Arguments can be made re his prowess (or lack thereof) on the field, but what off-field behavior makes him a bad guy - just curious.

Personally, I love the guy - sign him tomorrow.

The social media issues. The weed issues. I just don't think he's smart off the field.

I don't know if he's a bad guy or not. I'm just honestly tired of the social media antics and the poor choices and gambling on the field. Sometimes it results in a good play. Other times, it results in him getting burned.

I would only sign him now if its reasonable and nowhere near top cornerback money. He has to be more consistent a splash play here and there is cool but the big plays hurt and high completion percentage keeps the chains moving.

Yeah. The devil you know....

Don't get the wrong idea though. I fully expect him to improve, and maybe even on an all-pro level.
That's a good enough reason to lock him up now, because waiting for him to do that could cost much more.

Then again, if he's peaked?
If he's peaked at 26, there's something terribly wrong with either him or our coaching staff. But it's a concern.

Not terribly pleased by this.
I don't like his inconsistent play and he's not even rated as a top half CB in this league. Guy is always getting burned for TD's, first downs, or huge gains. Yeah he ran back a few touchdowns so freaking what? He gives them back in the game usually anyways. He did so in the Dallas game and San Diego game. Him covering a #1 WR isn't an excuse either.
I'd rather keep Gaines and Tru and let his ass walk.

Right now? I guarantee you what the rumor mill is talking about is a feeler toward his agent, period.

Perhaps, who knows. I'd wait until I see a few games before I'd think about extending any CB. If they all play to their potential I think it would be cheaper to have EG and TJ with Joyner at slot then having JJ. The priority in my mind is keeping the DL, namely AD and RQ, intact. To do that we're gonna need big money. Right now JJ will cost more because he's had more Sportscenter type plays. I don't necessarily think you get more bang for the buck with him. It's more about keeping the secondary competent and cap friendly so we can keep the real strength of our defense in horns than it is anything else.

Being a pro bowl alternate is kinda like kissing your sister.

50th best CB?

That puts him well into the top third. You keep a DB that is ranked that high, maybe you don't break the bank for him but you keep him if you can.

My worry is the coaching staff seems to overvalue some guys and Snead/KD tend to go along and overpay...I do worry that Fisch is pushing to get him resigned since he is one of ours, with little regard to cost...

I think there is a gross underestimation among NFL fans regarding how difficult it is to be an NFL corner.

Rams in Extension Talks with Janoris Jenkins
by Nic Moody

http://archauthority.com/2015/07/27/st-louis-rams-in-extension-talks-with-janoris-jenkins/

The St Louis Rams are reportedly in negotiations to extend Cornerback Janoris Jenkins contract before the season begins, according to NFL reporter Rand Getlin.

Rand Getlin@Rand_Getlin
Just reported on @nflnetwork: The #Rams and Janoris Jenkins are engaged in discussions regarding a contract extension.

Rand Getlin@Rand_Getlin
Jenkins and his representatives would like to get a deal done with the #Rams by the time the season starts. Optimism that could happen.

Janoris Jenkins has a very strange relationship with the fans of St. Louis. Some people love him and think he is very underrated, and some fans hate him and think he is a waste of talent. Jenkins has shown flashes of brilliance, and had an outstanding rookie season by having four interceptions, three which were returned for touchdowns, as well as an additional defensive touchdown on a fumble recovery. Since his rookie season, Jenkins has been the number one defensive back for the team, known for occasionally getting burnt down the field, while also flashing plenty of talent and room for improvement.

Jenkins is quite the trash talker, as most cornerbacks are. He does work hard and even though he hasn’t shown an extreme amount of improvement over the years, he is still improved and gotten better each year. Jenkins is also great at fan interaction, holding Q&A’s on twitter and responding to fans frequently. Jenkins main problem on the field is that he always thinks every play can result in a pick six. Jenkins will sometimes get caught looking at the quarterback and get burned by his man.

I personally don’t believe the stats tell the whole story. I think Jenkins is an underrated player. I think he has at above average tackling ability despite missing 16 tackles last year. I watched Jenkins last year single-handedly bring down Marshawn Lynch in the backfield for a loss, so don’t tell me he can’t tackle. If Jenkins continues to work on the fundamentals, he can be one of the best cornerbacks in the league.

This is a wonderful representation of Jenkins Coverage abilities:

#Rams’ CB Janoris Jenkins has moments of brilliance but too many brain farts. Here’s his #CoverageProductivity chart

So does Jenkins deserve an extension? Ultimately, I believe he does. Jenkins was a huge risk coming out of the draft as he had many off-field problems. Since then, he has stayed out of trouble and started almost every single game since his rookie year. He has earned a spot on the field, the only issue is the money. It’s always about the money. With Jenkins being on the cocky side, it would not surprise me at all if he was asking for a huge sum. Jenkins play has been nice, but the last thing I want to see is the Rams overpay for a good corner, not a great one. If the Rams can secure jenkins for under seven million a year, that will be a great price for what Jenkins brings. Anything beyond that and they’re stretching.

If the deal does not get done before the season starts, It would appear Jenkins will bet on himself and wait till the end of the season for negotiation.

I would agree with this but I don't necessarily agree with your point about ESPN highlights. I'm sure ESPN also replayed every time he got burned as well. I believe JJ is a good to very good CB and starting early to work out a deal is more in the Rams favor than not. In this one as with most I've seen, KD will do right by us.

My worry is the coaching staff seems to overvalue some guys and Snead/KD tend to go along and overpay...I do worry that Fisch is pushing to get him resigned since he is one of ours, with little regard to cost...
You may be right but I also think KD has the balls to tell Fish no. KD has also grown up living and breathing football albeit from a son of an agent point of view. I don't think he flinches easy. Some say we overspent on JL but I don't agree with that either.

IMO, the Rams will agree on a value and try to work out a deal to come in at or below that figure. KD will work out the salary cap issues and we will either sign JJ to a workable deal or JJ will hold out to test the FA market. So far, it hasn't worked out all that great for players to search for more money so I would guess that JJ's agent has seen this.

What I think we will see out of this is whether JJ himself believes in his future with the Rams. I'm guessing if he doesn't, he will resort to a pay me or trade me (test the FA waters)mindset. I would rather know that now than wait until after the season. If we know that now, we can better groom his replacement.

I'd certainly like to see him play better, but his issue, to me, is consistency. Not talent. I look at games like the Saints game last year where he completely shut down Jimmy Graham and see what he can do when he's focused. I also think he's been getting better at focusing... and better acquainted with the scheme and his fellow secondary guys.

His impact on the run game also should not be discounted.

This!! He will stick his body thru some tight spots and make an impact.

Janoris is one of my favorite Rams, but damn if he don't drive me crazy some Sundays.

Not sure how to feel about this...will he play hard with a new contract before the season?

Dude still gets burned too much. Still needs to play a cleaner game.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
I'm so pissed reading some of these responses, I can't even post.

I really wonder if some fans know ANYTHING about football in general, and the CB position in particular.

And BTW, what the fuck difference does it make if he smokes weed, or has fun on social media? So fucking what.

So fucking what. Does anybody remember when we had NO corners?
