Rams 53-man roster projection: Final edition before Tuesday's deadline

[theramswire.usatoday.com]

Cameron DaSilva

In the next two days, the Los Angeles Rams will need to trim their roster down from 80 players to only 53, setting their initial squad for the 2022 season. Obviously, changes will be made not only in the days that follow final cuts, but also throughout the season, but making the 53-man roster is a huge step for players.

Now that the preseason is wrapped up and training camp is in the rearview mirror, players no longer have opportunities to impress the coaching staff beyond the play they put on film. Saturday’s preseason finale could’ve gone better for a lot of players, but the team likely already had a good idea of who is going to make the team.

Here’s my latest roster projection for the Rams before they start trimming it down. Keeping three quarterbacks, eight receivers and only two tight ends seems like the play, even as different as that is for Sean McVay and the Rams.

They can easily make it work, too.

Quarterback (3)

Matthew Stafford
John Wolford
Bryce Perkins
I’m going to stick with the Rams keeping three quarterbacks. They seem to value Perkins and he does help as a scout team player when the Rams face quarterbacks like Kyler Murray, Trey Lance and Josh Allen, given their mobility.

If they cut him, there’s not a great chance they’d get him back on the practice squad. Someone else would probably claim him off waivers.

Running back (4)

Cam Akers
Darrell Henderson Jr.
Kyren Williams
Jake Funk
Even with funk fumbling the ball in the red zone on Saturday night, I think the Rams will decide to keep four running backs – especially with how often Akers and Henderson are injured. They simply can’t afford to go thin at this position, and Funk may not be someone who makes it to the practice squad.

Wide receiver (8)

Cooper Kupp
Allen Robinson
Van Jefferson
Ben Skowronek
Tutu Atwell
Brandon Powell
Jacob Harris
Lance McCutcheon
McCutcheon has done nothing but make a strong case for the 53-man roster. It’s going to be really hard for the Rams to cut him, and there’s a near-zero chance he’ll make it through waivers after the preseason he had. He led the NFL in receiving yards through two preseason games and looks the part of an NFL receiver.

Harris should also make the team, especially with the Rams potentially only keeping two tight ends.

Tight end (2)

Tyler Higbee
Brycen Hopkins
I just don’t know if Jared Pinkney or Roger Carter Jr. are worth keeping on the roster if the Rams also have bigger receivers such as Harris and McCutcheon. Two tight ends seems painfully thin, but they should be able to keep either Pinkney or Carter (or both) on the practice squad.

Offensive line (8)

Joe Noteboom
David Edwards
Brian Allen
Coleman Shelton
Rob Havenstein
Tremayne Anchrum Jr.
A.J. Jackson
A.J. Arcuri
Bobby Evans is the most notable name absent from this list. He still has a chance to make the team, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he does, but Arucri seems like the better backup tackle right now, and the Rams have Anchrum who can play either guard spot if needed.

Evans will probably get scooped up by another team, but he just hasn’t impressed very much.

Defensive line (6)

Aaron Donald
Greg Gaines
A’Shawn Robinson
Marquise Copeland
Michael Hoecht
Jonah Williams
I didn’t have Williams in my latest projection, but he’s earned a spot on this team. He just keeps flashing in the preseason, and did so again on Saturday night against the Bengals. Keeping him, Hoecht and Copeland gives the Rams enough depth on the defensive line behind the starters, and Bobby Brown III will be back after six games (suspension).

Inside linebacker (3)

Bobby Wagner
Ernest Jones
Christian Rozeboom
Travin Howard remains on the NFI list, so I have a feeling the Rams could have him start the year on it, causing him to miss four games. If that’s the case, the Rams will have to roll with three linebackers to start – even though Wagner and Jones are going to be the only two that play much at all.

Howard will obviously make the team if he’s deemed healthy.

Outside linebacker (5)

Leonard Floyd
Justin Hollins
Terrell Lewis
Keir Thomas
Chris Garrett
It’s going to be close between Benton Whitley, Thomas, Chris Garrett and Brayden Thomas now that Daniel Hardy has an ankle sprain that will cause him to start the year with an injury designation.

I’m switching things up from Whitley to Thomas after seeing the way Thomas played in the preseason finale. He flashed more than a couple times, including a sack and three tackles for a loss in the first half alone.

Garrett is the wild card in it all, playing his first preseason game on Saturday. The coaching staff might still like him more despite his injury history.

Cornerback (6)

Jalen Ramsey
Troy Hill
David Long Jr.
Robert Rochell
Decobie Durant
Derion Kendrick
No changes here. The Rams’ top six cornerbacks are basically set, and there’s only room for maybe one more if they want to keep a player like Grant Haley. I don’t think that’ll happen, given the depth they already have at cornerback with these six players.

Safety (5)

Jordan Fuller
Nick Scott
Taylor Rapp
Terrell Burgess
Russ Yeast
I still have the Rams keeping five safeties, but instead of Quentin Lake making it, I plugged in Yeast. Lake has yet to be activated from the PUP list and seeing as he hasn’t practiced or played in any preseason games, he’ll probably start the season on PUP.

Enter Yeast, who plays like his hair is on fire and always seems to find the ball.

Specialists (3)

P Riley Dixon
LS Matthew Orzech
No changes here. This group is set.

I like this projection with maybe the exception of picking up another Offensive Linemen. However, the 8 DaSilva has listed is the best 8 the Rams have and although Kolone played acceptable, IMO, I would leave him off.

Also I'm not a fan of keeping Jake Funk and not sure what he offers on special teams, again, it would be nice if the Rams could add another RB that is available come some of the other cuts.

Having all OT's as your OL reserve unit causes me heartburn :fire::sick:den. But I fully agree with you that Evans & Kolone should have already cleaned out their lockers. Neither has demonstrated they belong on the MR53.

Rookie Jack Snyder turned in the best OG performance seen in the preseason. Much better than reserves OL'ers Anchrum/ Jackson/ Brewer/ Arcuri.

Snyder accomplished this by playing the entire game between Evans :crap: & Kolone:poop:. Carberry needs interior OL'ers now & in the future in the worse way.

Jack Snyder was the only true surprise & bright spot in the 3 preseason games. None of the reserves played that well. Every snap Snyder took was solid. Granted he had fewer snaps than the above four did in the preseason. Go with 9 OL'ers & include Snyder, and cut from this group Yeast/ Funk/ Garrett/ Harris for that one MR53 position.

I could see this happening. Personally I'd drop a backup QB and keep Pickney or Carter on the 53.

QB:
1. Stafford
2. Perkins

I think it's a travesty to keep a third QB with this roster. Pick one. That's the two I'd go with.

RB:
1. Akers
2. Williams
3. Hendy
4. Funk

They have to keep 4 backs given the injuries we have seen with them. Funk has been a disappointment in the backfield but is an excellent teams player so he'll get the nod.

WR:
1. Kupp
2. Robinson
3. Jefferson
4. Atwell
5. Skowronek
6. Powell
7. McClutch
8. Harris

If the Rams end up adding Odell then Jefferson is the trade chip as he'll have the most value vs what he brings.

TE:
1. Higs
2. Hop
3. Carter

Carter gets the nod for teams and basic depth for playing inline.

OL:
1. Havenstein
2. Noteboom
3. Edwards
4. Allen
5. Shelton
6. Anchrum
7. A.J. Jackson
8. A.J. Arcuri

One of the Rams roster mistakes this year was not adding enough competitive depth up front. Gotta own it and only keep those who deserve it but I strongly dislike only having 8. I expect they will have an eye on the final cut round and put in claims on a player or two here to try to find one more.

DL:
1. AD
2. Gaines
3. Robinson
4. Copeland
5. Hoecht
6. Williams

I think the article had these right.

ILB:
1. Wagner
2. Jones
3. Rozeboom
4. Hummel

Rozeboom has been core teams so I figure the Rams keep him. Hummel is a keeper with cheap team control so he'll wrap up the group. Gervase will clear waivers.

OLB:
1. Floyd
2. Hollins
3. Lewis
4. Thomas
5. Whitley

Garrett will be exposed to waivers and if he clears they'll PS him. But he's been beaten out this year. Whitley showed some good things, so did Thomas, and that has to count for something.

CB:
1. Ramsey
2. Hill
3. Long
4. Rochell
5. Durant
6. Kendrick

Deepest corner room I can recall in my lifetime. Question is who takes that role opposite Ramsey because generally that player gets a ton of work and has to be up to snuff.

S:
1. Fuller
2. Scott
3. Rapp
4. Yeast

Lake's injury simplifies this room quite a bit. Yeast deserves that final spot.

3 questions facing Rams ahead of Tuesday’s final cuts

Will Sean McVay add offensive line help this week?
By Kenneth Arthur

1661718144650.png

.............................................On the other side of the ball, the Rams are starting two new players on the offensive line—Joe Noteboom, Coleman Shelton—and they’ll have two more free agents in 2023 in Rob Havenstein and David Edwards. So the reserves couldn’t be more important, especially after losing Logan Bruss for the entire season with a torn ACL and MCL.

The reserves have not looked good in the preseason, often getting beat by the reserves on other teams. That includes the veteran options, Bobby Evans and Chandler Brewer, which is even more concerning.

It could mean that McVay and Les Snead are looking for offensive linemen reserves bound to get cut or traded by other teams and that may be one area where a new face joins the 53-man roster this week. If not on the offensive line, maybe on the defensive edges.

I think you're on point. I do believe Hummel would make it to the practice squad...and actually Rozenboom probably would as well if Travin is ready for week 1. Harris would probably be considered the 3rd TE, but I also agree that Carter and Pankey would make it to the practice squad. I do think we need to find another TE to add to the practice squad that we can groom over the long run..kind of like we did for Blanton.

I'd also say that Bobby Evans game experience may keep him on the roster...

and looking forward to a potential return of OBJ.... I'd say that keeping 4 RBS isn't exactly a necessity and that Funk would likely clear waivers to make it to the practice squad.

Seemed like Mcvay was a bit off body language angry face no smile just like going through the motions seemed uneasy. Maybe cutdown day or something else he is only human but seemed like a hollowed out Mcvay
I think he’s just pissed he can’t be in on @CGI_Ram ’s Survivor Pool this season…

it's not that often (maybe more than this old fart remembers)...

but every once in a while you crack me up... especially lately...

maybe it's the intensity of the looming season, and me needing some levity...

i just know you've been throwing out some epic comedy lately... much appreciated.. :)
