Puka had to make up for dropping a wide open touchdown pass with 15 seconds to go in the first half, which would’ve made it a 2 score game.

But even if the Rams came up short vs Carolina, what conversation do you think we’d be having? I’m curious.
Only saying fading down the stretch somewhat, then following that by losing the first Playoff game would take SOME luster off the Stafford MVP Season. Just kind of speculating.

Ty Simpson: Had secret meeting with Rams' McVay before draft

LOS ANGELES -- The Rams wanted to keep their interest in Ty Simpson close to the vest before the NFL draft, so the Alabama quarterback kept his meeting with coach Sean McVay "private," he said Monday in an interview with Ian Fitzsimmons on ESPN Radio's "Amber & Ian."

The Rams drafted Simpson, Matthew Stafford's likely successor, with the 13th pick Thursday night.

"We tried to keep this under wraps as long as we could," Simpson said in Monday's interview. "It was something to where I knew they were interested, but they wanted to make it private and didn't want people to know that they were interested.

"So, I had some secret meetings with Coach McVay, and I just was trying to be on script and do what everybody told me and not to tell anybody."

After he was drafted, Simpson downplayed his predraft interactions with the Rams.

"It was really brief, to be honest with you," he said Thursday night. "I met with some scouts in Alabama, and that was really it. They talked to my agent, but that really wasn't much."

In reality, Simpson said Monday, he and McVay had one meeting before the draft and "talked for hours and hours."

"And it was just football," Simpson said. "It was just straight football. And it was like a kid in a candy store. Me and him are sitting there, and we're just going back and forth. You can tell the obsession he has for the game, and you can tell the love he has for quarterback play.

"It's something that I appreciate, and it's something that I enjoy because I really enjoy playing the position and value the position. So, being with him and then getting to know him and then just seeing a little bit of how I would get coached if I was fortunate enough to go there was something that I couldn't have asked for a better situation."

Though McVay said he "couldn't be more excited about being able to add [Simpson]" to the roster, he wanted to make it clear that Stafford will be the Rams' quarterback for as long as he wants to play.

"Whenever that time comes for [Simpson] to get an opportunity to be Matthew's successor will be on Matthew's terms," McVay said Saturday night.

I feel very strongly that when we look back in 6 years, Downs will be the best player from this draft class.

Nick Saban and Kirby Smart talk about him like he’s Deion Sanders and Ronnie Lott combined, and those guys arent necessarily in a hurry to hand out praise like that.
Well if that is indeed the case, and it very well could be, at least WE didn't pass on him. Can remember thinking we had a shot at him when he got past NYG at 10.

I've been so caught up on defending the Rams picking the QBotF because I agree with the strategy, and was vocal about that before the draft.

But have completely missed an obvious point: what if we need Simpson to help us this year? The Rams knew in March that Jimmy G was likely to retire. There are not any obvious vets out there that have experience in our system. Simpson could be the best back up we could obtain this year.

Thats a true battle out for QB2 between Ty and Stetson.

It’s weird you keep making comments attributed to me that I didn’t say. Again, you either are not reading….or you are confusing me with someone else (or projecting). lol.

Like this - saying that I keep saying he’s gonna be “great”. That’s weird. Haven’t said it. Haven’t thought it.

But for McVay, what matters to him is QBs who understand and them implementing his complicated offense, Reading D, making quick decisions, smart/football IQ, processing, willing to learn, etc.

Most QBs would get eaten alive by McVay - or he’d quit. Simpson seems totally his kid of guy. So fit wise for McVay (which matters way more than us) Simpson is near the top for this year and next. McVay is not taking some raw dude a being patient with him while he learns reading defenses, processing, etc.
Being near the top fit wise to me means you think McVay can make this kid a legit viable QB1. You went on to list why he was better than all the other incoming QBs for next years draft (weird, but ok). If we are saying he's the best prospect for McVay this way, yeah you think this is McVay's best chance of coaching up the next great QB. So yeah, you said it but in a much longer way which is how I'm interpreting it. Keep saying thats ok if you feel that way. You're definitely not as passionate as Coliseum Ram on that though lol.....I actually get having faith in McVay as a coach. Regardless of what a coach can do, its ultimately up to the player to become good. I'm not there yet in believing the player, but hey that could change. I'm just sticking with the we'll find out in due time even though I wasn't a fan yet everytime I say that, I get a response as to why he's a good/great pick. I get we don't agree and thats cool. Don't mind the banter about it either, what else is there to do in the off season?

To me…training camp (from an offensive perspective) will be almost entirely about seeing if Stetson has what it takes to be the backup. If he plays well enough for McVay to feel good about rolling with him as QB2, they’ll be no pressure on Simpson and he can just use year one to absorb and learn as much as possible.

But if Stetson looks kinda “meh” in August, they are going to throw a bag at either Jimmy or Flacco to be QB2.

Even when I say I formed this opinion well before posting this clip, ya predictably still used Greenberg like I thought some would, go figure haha. He's only one of many other people out there that share this sentiment. There's a reason this pick was described as shocking. Its a pick for a polarizing player. High risk, high reward.
Fair. I'm also Team McVay over Team Chapo, Jr. ;)

We are fucked if anyone other than Stafford leads this team. In all fairness to the kid, that's about 99% of all NFL teams though.

I've been thinkin its Jimmy all the way, but now have comverted. Think its Stetson and Ty. Only a matter of who's 2 and who's 3.

And like I've said earlier, its NOT gonna freak me out if Ty is QB3. No freak-outs from me on Ty until Year 2 minimum.

I disagree.

We're fucked if Stafford misses a large number of games or the playoffs, but there's a chance we'll need the backup to keep things afloat for 4-6 games during the season.

If Stafford missed 4 games during the season, we can't go 0-4. We need someone that can help us pull out 2-2.

Apparently Simpson was interviewed on ESPN radio today and did admit that he did have a 4 hr secret meeting with McVay. He stayed on script this weekend when asked about meeting McVay, but said today that they did meet, but he was told to keep it under wraps.

If this was mentioned earlier on here, sorry, I didn't see it.

LOL, cant actually think of one single solitary person, including ALL the Simpson backers, that implied he should lead the team over Stafford. Every single one has him sitting the first year and most have him sitting TWO.

Kinda what I was talking about actually. If Stafford only misses a few games, yeah I don't think its time to panic. If he misses a shit ton if games, yeah, we're fucked. My fault for not clarifying that better.

This is an interesting development for a couple reasons. First, it puts to rest the notion that McVay wasn’t on board. But it also highlights the fact that the Rams knew no one else was really all that high on Simpson as a first rounder. We are 4 days removed from the pick and the only 2 teams besides us who showed any interest in Simpson were Arizona and Cleveland, and we know Arizona thought he was still going to be there at 34.

So, if Stafford misses a handful of games, QB2 can be just as much, or actually more, for this year as the OT we picked in the 3rd round.

Oh this isn't directed at Simpson backers at all but you seem to be fixated on that one. I would never expect any rookie to lead this team to the ultimate prize. That's a really tough ask even for established QBs. Everyone and their mama knows Stafford gives us the best chance hands down for another Lombardi. No one in their right mind would argue that unless he unexpectedly falls off a cliff like no other.

What's interesting to me is the belief that if it got out that McVay liked the kid, other teams would give him another look. Probably a lot of truth to that.

This makes so much more sense to me now. I just couldn’t get past the - never met with him thing on such a huge decision.
