Stetson Bennett is going to have to outplay Ty Simpson by a significant margin during training camp to win the backup job. They are going to want to get Ty as many reps as possible. If the competition is anywhere close, they are going to give the nod to the guy they spent the first round pick on.

But I think Stetson is going to come in and have a really good camp. He’s been in this situation before. He was an afterthought at Georgia. They brought in 5 star after 5 star and he was buried on the depth chart. He came out the other end of it with 2 national championships. He’s improved since he was drafted and this will be his 4th year in the system. I hope he has a great camp because that will push Ty to grow.

Ah, I didn't know that.
I sort of wish the NFL would expand the game day roster limit, even if just to something like 55.
It's a recent rule from a couple years ago when the Shitters cried because they didn't have their 3rd qb active and the first 2 got hurt.

Even if Stafford plays another 2 years Simpson is basically on a 5 year rookie contract because of the option year. So it's 2031 before you need to worry about if you want to give him that big deal. We'll probably have a moon base by then. We may be playing the Ultimate road game by then on the dark side with our QB on a new 1 billion guaranteed deal.

This will be the first pre season were I'm genuinely excited to watch our QB play. That is, unless they deem Simpson as the for sure back up and hold him out, a al G-String. That would be criminal however as Simpson needs one thing, reps.

I just watched this. I can see why Snead and McVay didn't have to meet him. Gruden does all their work for them. What I see with Simpson is a coach's kid who is quick to pick up the game, smart, pretty straight-laced, will stay out of trouble and bust his ass to do what it takes to make the team better. Over a two game stretch he was 31/32 for 496 yards and 6 TD's. That's pretty damn accurate. Maybe Snead and McVay know more about this team and its needs than we all think we do;-) Let's hope so.

Agree but also worth noting that the Rams often have a different approach to the Draft.

They don't generally do any top-30-visits where prospects come to their facilities. Snead and McVay rarely travel to on-campus pro days and individual work-outs (they send scouts and (maybe) assistants).

So, when would McVay meet with these guys pre-draft?

Didn't see this mentioned, but just watching an NFL Live re-run this morning (yeah I have no life). They were talking about Simpson, Shefter reported that the Rams didn't receive a single call about pick 13 in regards to trading back.

So that's why they stuck and picked Simpson at 13. They likley would have liked to move back a few picks and then take him.
Well that sucks

If Stafford gets hurt Jimmy G will return i think. He just doesn't want to commit to a backup role.
Would you want him as a starter, if he’s also considering retirement? That doesn’t ooze “fire in the belly”.

I think he’s a backup if he wants to play.

Chris Fowler reported that the Rams DID receive calls about trading #13.
Adam Schefter reported they DID NOT receive any calls.

Both are Insiders ... So much for Insiders
Is a text considered a call, by some?
