Question. Is building a competitive roster in ‘23 even doable, realistically?

So many factors beyond hitting on the draft and our own player health affect competitiveness. Like I mentioned earlier, the health and success of our division competition is a huge factor and here's another.

We shall see soon enough.

The Ram offense was easily handled by every playoff caliber defense it faced last year well before injuries turned the unit into a complete shambles.

10 pts at Buffalo opening week.
9 pts against the 49ers 2 weeks later
10 pts against the Cowboys the following week
14 pts in the 49er rematch.
13 pts the following week against the Bucs.

See a pattern developing there yet? (I'll spare everyone the horrifying rushing stats in those losses)

No real firepower has been added anywhere on the Offensive side.

Sorry, but to me that is not encouraging, at all
10 pts vs Chiefs and our defense gave up 26 and it looked like the Chiefs weren't trying hard at all.

In every one of those games they started a different combination of OL than they did the week before. We were already in bad shape by the first 9ers game, worse shape by the Cowboys game, shambles by the 49er rematch, and fucked beyond belief by the Buc game.

Come on man! "They weren't trying hard"? It's the NFL. Exactly what does that look like?

The fact is our offense gave up the ball twice in our territory. And our defense held KC to 1 of 5 in the red zone. They scored 2 TDs....the Chiefs 2 TDs.......and kicked 4.FGs..Our D tightened up big time.

Absolutely unrealistic. Entire ST gone, 8 of 11 defensive starters gone, 2 BUs gone, Robinson is up for a trade. We are going nowhere next season period relying on draft picks to materialize next season into bonafide starters is hilarious. If you look at the Rams drafting it's been terrible. Our FA pick ups have been great. To that point with little FA money available next season is a retooling for 2024.

Answer is resounding no - no matter how good the coaching is and even finding a couple surprise gems in the draft we still will be awful and I am ok with that. I have no choice.

In my un-scientific and probably biased opinion - we are competitive in almost every game next year and win 7-10 of them.

We will be better on Offense this year if we can avoid another historically bad season of injuries. That will allow us to score more points and keep the Defense off the field.

The Defense may be worse than 2022 with a large turnover of players. But we can win games by controlling the tempo on Offense and holding a lead with a less than dominant D.

Special teams? Heck we haven’t had a strong unit in years - kickers are a crapshoot through FA and we roll the dice. LS and Punter concern me but we can hopefully find them as UDFAs

So can we be competitive? Absolutely! Are we a playoff team? Maybe? Will we be drafting 1st overall in 2024? Unlikely without a trade

In 2023 we will again be relying upon the same oft injured Ram offensive linemen and backups.

If there is any unit on this team that needed a complete "overhaul" after last year it is the OL.

Instead, we watch as 2/3's of a quality DL departed along with the best two starters on what was a solid LB corp.

The dreadful performances of our OL for much of last year has me doubting whether McVay and Snead can just "wave their magic wands" and find quality Olinemen that will hold up against playoff caliber defenses among currently unemployed NFL players.

That leaves the draft.

My hope is that our new Oline coach is the second coming of Jim Hanifan and is provided with an infusion of new Olinemen.

I think edge, CB, ILB, QB2, PK, P are all higher priorities than RB. As I've said before, the fact that the Rams don't have a backup QB at all and didn't sign a vet FA would strongly suggest they are going to draft one and he won't be a late round or UDFA kind of player. I think they will take a QB no later than the 5th round. Who they take and when will depend upon who drops to them. If they can't get a targeted player who might become a starter then I think they will target a good tier 2 type of backup QB.

IMO if the Rams can't get a targeted starter type of QB this year they will grab the backup QB then they will have the resources to take a targeted starter of the future next year. As Stafford's contract suggests, the Rams don't anticipate him being the starter beyond 2025 at the latest. IMO he retires after the 2024 season. I think both Matt and the Rams both hope he can go two more years. That said there is no guarantee Stafford can play without missing games at his age for two years. That is why having a quality backup is so important. The Ram's next run starts this year and I believe it will be done in a more sustainable fashion this time. No more one and done hired guns. That is not to say Snead won't make splash signings because he will. It's just to say they will be more selective. Winning that Lombardi in 2021 was important. Now that they proved they can win it all, they can settle down to the job of building a dynasty type of franchise.

Those like the media who don't think they are serious about making this year their first year of another SB run are sadly mistaken. This roster is far better than the casual observer or media realize. There is talent on the roster now they simply need to fill a few holes and it's not like they don't have positional flexibility. They seem to have some decent depth with guys like Copeland and Kier Thomas and their OL even has options.

An all vet OL of Noteboom, Jackson, Allen, Shelton, Havenstein is a possibility this year. Next year they will move on from Havenstein, and Jackson would seem to be the heir apparent at RT. Jackson is better than Havenstein has ever been right now. That said I think they will start out in OTAs hoping to see their final iteration of their OL with the exception of Jackson who will play swing OT this year until Havenstein leaves.
2023
LT Noteboom
LG Thomas
C Allen
RG Bruss
RT Havenstein.
2024
LT Noteboom
LG Thomas
C Shelton
RG Bruss
RT Jackson

In my opinion, the last iteration of the OL could start this year and they should. IMO it's their starting OL of the future. Havenstein will be on the roster this year simply because of his cap. It doesn't mean he has to start. His age is showing. Speed and power abuse him and this year's schedule looks tough. They probably will draft an OT his year in the 6th round to develop as their swing OT in 2024. I'm not sure Arcuri makes the roster this year. Unless Wendell can really turn him around because Arcuri looked down right bad last year. When 37 year old Nsekhe outplays him that's not a good sign. I'd be surprised if Nsekhe isn't signed for one last year as a backup
swing OT this year.

We all know success with the offense begins and ends with the OL. The 2024 iteration of the OL can be a pretty good one with good OTs on both edges and stout inside with a OG that can pull in the run attack and a mobile center that can block on the second level. Start that 2024 version this year and they will have a good run game to support Stafford. With Kupp, Jefferson, and Atwell they have speed and versatility with their WRs. All three can threaten all three levels. Very few defenses can matchup man for man with those 3.

Despite losing Ramsey, Floyd and Wagner, the D has weapons. Hoecht has the makings of a very good edge and I would expect a leaner smarter player in him. Donald looks like he will continue to be the GOAT DT. Murchison flashed last year. My only reservation is Morris and is a nonsensical desire to play a mixed Fangio front with a 2 gap NT. They got rid of Gaines because he's a one gap 1T NT. Murchison is also a one gap attacking style IOL. Bobby Brown on the other hand will play early downs as a 2 gap 0T NT. There is a reason this is falling out of favor in the NFL. Why? Because most teams have no problem passing on first down when they know their QB won't have the pressure. Opposite Hoecht I expect there will be a rotation of Hardy and a draft rookie.

I expect Morris to play a base nickel, two deep shell. Right now Jones and Rozeboom project as their ILBs with Jones as MIKE and Rozeboom as WIL who has enough speed to play coverage or to give him range to play sideline to sideline. But I also expect them to draft an upgrade at WIL to replace Rozeboom next year.

In Morris' secondary he has Durant and Rochell outside. I expect them to use their second or third round pick on a CB. Morris can play three CBs or three safeties. Before the draft, the safeties are the strength of the secondary with Fuller, Lake, and Yeast. Fuller projects as their middle zone defender in a two deep shell scheme. Both Lake and Yeast have enough speed to have the range if splitting the deep zone. Morris dumping Scott was a clear tipoff that Morris will play a Tampa Two with Lake and Yeast because the Rams have 3 SS types and no FS. Kendrick got benched because of his lack of speed and especially for his inconsistent effort, a problem he had in college. It wouldn't surprise me for them to use one of their 3 early picks to take a CB to replace Kendrick. Morris gave Kendrick his shot it's time to move on but Morris' penchant to play only his friends might surface but I hope Pleasant has the final say as to who plays.

A Tampa Two isn't a bad scheme, but it depends entirely on how it's played. Morris played mostly zone and it stunk. Staley played a lot of zone but it was a #1 defense. The difference? How the secondary played it. Pleasant was Staley's DB coach. I'm hoping that McVay brought Pleasant back to re-install that aggressive style of DB play.

With a few players and good coaching, this can be a damn good football team. On defense, it will come down to how it's played. On offense, it will be Stafford's and Kupp's health and how the OL holds up. In other words business is as usual as it is every year.

Don't give up on this team guys. They are better than you think.

So according to Jourdan, the Rams could be bad ... OR ... they could NOT be bad.

Now, THAT is some In-Depth-Analysis ... OR ... it's just Bull-Shit.

Seriously though ... it's helpful and entertaining ... OR ... it's useless and boring.

Regardless, that is just what I think ... OR ... maybe, it's not.

Just Kidding ... OR ... Totally Serious.

I'll stop now ... OR ...
Better than what Rams fans are saying :D Only a couple of us think we'll be fine this year most have written off this season already and some the next as well.

OR not ...

Seriously, I see something between "We'll be fine" and "Written-off this season".

2022 was a brutal season ... disappointing and frustrating ... but you have to move forward.

Thus far, the 2023 off-season has been a disappointment and frustrating to me. I don't feel good about the current roster talent; and don't feel confident that the Rams have the resources (cap space and draft choices) to fill what I consider to be many weak areas.

However, I have not "written-off the season". I am looking forward to seeing how they fill-out the roster; and even more interested in seeing how the revised coaching staff handles the new roster. I may not be confident but I am hopeful.

I know I've braced myself for a terrible record this year. As in, top 5 draft pick, which is where I believe our next QB will come from. We have absolutely bled talent the past two years due in large part to the cap. I wouldn't trade the SB ring to be in better position, though. I just realistically think this team is a few years away. Heck, IMO, the only thing we have from an absolute complete rebuild is Stafford, Donald, and Kupp. Which is a bit strange given I don't think two of those players will be with us when we are truly "back."

In 2023 I need to see a plan in action where the Rams are building up the OL, utilizing the talent they have better and adding some key pieces to the Defense (CB, Edge). As long as they finish stronger than they start the season and they find some real starters in those key positions, 2023 is going according to plan. Then 2024 (or even mid season 2023 before trade deadline) allows them to really explore some transformational trades and FAs. I want a real playoff ready team in 2024 and I think it’s more than doable with McSnead.

Isn’t the idea that this team has a huge range performance wise in 2023 from horrible to playoff team valid? We are going to rely upon injured players to be healthy, 1-3 year previous drafted young guys to now step up to be starters (some of which have barely played), Newly drafted 2023 guys and lots of new coaches. That sounds like a lot of unknown.

Obviously horrible can happen because it did last year. If the OL isn’t healthy again, then Stafford won’t survive and we are toast. But if we are over the injury bug, young guys are ready to play, our coaches are back to top notch, McVay is all in, etc. - I can see a double digit win total and playoffs.

It’s crazy, but a range of 4 to 11 wins is what we’re looking at. Nobody knows what it’ll be though until we see it unfold. That’s actually kind of exciting to me. Beyond that, I think 2024+ is gonna rock!

it is, for 2024 :sunglasses:

Honestly, just like Dick Vermeil, it takes on average 3 years to vet a roster etc. This year we have the chance to fill out our depth and role player's with some nice blue/red chip talent at the top. 2024 draft/FA will be to fill in immediate starters etc. It's doable for Staffords and AD's last hoorah.
