I said I would like to keep him, I just would understand the other side of this when you consider his position and paying him essentially franchise QB money.

In the end he will never end his career here with that type of cap hit gor that position if you intend on keeping Watkins and if Goff and Gurley get big 2nd contracts.

So if you could turn him into 20M a year of cap space and two #1s and say a #3, then that is a way of building a more complete team.

You're going to spend as much on two quality FAs (if not more) than you would on Aaron Donald. You're overstating what we gain.

Imagine having two 1s? Why? So we can try and draft another Aaron Donald? The odds of that happening are extremely slim. On the other hand, we can just keep Aaron Donald instead of hoping to win the lottery again. First round picks aren't a guarantee of anything.

I really am baffled by this type of thinking. People want to throw big money at good players, but they aren't accepting of throwing big money at our HOF-level talent.

Is it really the money? Or is he just rage quitting and trying to stack with the winning team? If so would you still respect that? At some point this needs to come to an end.

I understand your points.
But there's a difference between "big money" and "absurd money." Absurd money weakens the team's future success. Not many defensive players worth absurd money, in my opinion.

Sure, just cutting him, no way! Never happen. Shouldn't ever happen.

But getting a bunch of picks and one already proven stud O-lineman for him? That's conceivable to me.

Just sayin.

Its really the money.
Is their a concrete number? Or is that just a guesstimation? Because its always about the money right? I just wan't to know that number. He isn't getting a Derrick Carr like contract thats for sure.

If I'm Donald, I look at the Kirk Cousins and Le'Veon Bell situations and say "I want no part of that". I know the position differences, but Kirk as established himself as one of the better QBs in this league. He's a 100 million dollar QB in this market, no doubt. Bell is one of, if not the best, running backs in the league. They waited too long to get their contract situations solved and are now in franchise tag hell, especially Cousins. They are wasting valuable time not getting long term security. Donald isn't waiting until he is on an expiring to talk extension. He wants to avoid the tag and the mess that comes with it.

If Donald plays out these last two years and then gets the Kirk Cousins experience of two tags, that's 4 years down the road. He would then be around 30 years old, and still not have gotten that long term, big money, secure contract. No one will want to pay him as much when he is 30, and god knows what could happen injury wise. This is his best time to get a long term deal done, and it's the best for the team because they will be able to lock him in for his prime years.

I hate the thought of Aaron playing for any other team. But at some point, the rest of OUR team has to come first. I'm not in the camp that says you put the rest of your team at risk for the best DT in the game.

We also don't know how he will transition to this defense. I think most of us assume he will still be a beast but I think most of us remember Hayes. If Donald doesn't have Brockers AND two DEs, can he be as disruptive? I think he will still be great but game changing great? Not really sure.

I voted no. Even if we gave him a 7 year 140mil contract we could make it work.

Here is our 2018 and 2019 cap numbers (from Spotrac.com) and how we could make the Donald contract work:

Free future cap:
2018 - 37m
2019 74m

Money we can free up in 2018 by cuts: 23 mill
Quinn - 11m - If he doesn't return to form.
Barron - 7m
Woods - 5m

New 2018 free cap: 60m (37m + 23m f

Need to sign: (54m)
Tru or FA CB -14m
Sullivan - 8?
Sammy 12?
Donald 20

One has to reason that the great Wade Phillips won't stay here in LA for too long, be it moving on to another team or retirement. Agree?

I want Aaron Donald still in Horns when that day comes. It would sure make that defensive transition much smoother knowing you've still got the best defensive player in the league on your roster no matter what kind of system you want to run on D.

He's a generational type player. A young, durable, run stuffing, pass rushing freak.

IMO it's ludicrous to trade AD.

Can anyone name an NFL team that has crippled themselves financially because of one players contract?

Cousins ain't in no hell. He got $20m last year and will get $24m this year. Way more than what he's worth. And will get $30m+ if they franchise him again or an inflated contract compared to the one he would have got last season had he signed long term. The tag was a blessing for him. Same for tru. No way is ad in the same situation. His tag number will be way less than what he's worth, way waaaaaay less.

Cousins is getting compensated quite a bit, but I guarantee you that he would have preferred to have had a LTD figured out before the tag hit had him again. This whole time under the tag he has risked injury and he has his play constantly evaluated by the week as teams are looking for any reason to knock a few million of the contract he has yet to sign. I think he would be a lot more at ease if he had the deal he wanted, and are you saying he's not worth at least 20 mill in this market? Tannehill is at $19.25M and that was signed before he showed he could lead a team to the playoffs. Flacco is getting over $22M for one great playoff run. Oswiler and Glennon do nothing and get $18M and $15M a year on average respectively. Of course, Carr elevated QB contracts with his 5yr 125M deal as well. Cousins to me is a shoe-in for a $20M per year deal. If he gets a LTD at around 20M a year, that 1yr 24M tag is nothing in comparison.

Man, this is so random. What did McVay sign for, and was it 5 years? This new HC is really fuckin cool! He just has that BAMF vibe.

If I had to use youtube to describe my thoughts on this, it would go something like this:

Come this Monday everyone will be doing this when they hear we just locked up AD to a new deal:

This is silly talk. The Rams have the cap room to extend all their core players for the next 3-4 years at least. They could not get enough value in a trade, if was even possible, to justify it. They'll get a deal done soon IMO. The season can't get here soon enough.

Sapp didn't change or take over games all that often.

I can still recall the playoff game against the 49ers when Sapp grabbed Jerry Rice in the backfield on an end-around play and threw him to the ground. Rice twisted his knee on the play, and the 49ers were done. No one had ever done that to the 49ers before. Sapp took over that playoff game and it was huge.

was that the game where the whiners took 3 kneel downs with 2 mins left on the clock in the first half?
