? ' Crosby - Stills - Nash & Young!' or just Young alone!?:shades:
Mostly just Young. I liked some CSNY and really liked most Buffalo Springfield and even some Stills/Young. But I was mostly into early Neil stuff. Unfortunately, I think most of his latest stuff is kind of trite, mailed in BS. But you go back to Harvest, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, on up to Rust and even Hawks and Doves. There were so many great songs and lyrics. To this day, my favorite song of all time bar none is the long version of Like a Hurricane. I want them to play that and SRVs Tin Pan Alley (yeah I know he didn't write it) at my wake. And they better play them at volumes that will make your ears bleed. I will be crying from my ashes.

That is my question.....

I am musically back grounded. I do ask myself these questions about artists today....

But if this is Beatles (only) it would be John Lennon, and George Harrison....RIP

John Lennon:

George Harrison:

Only two that didn't sell their soul, but guess what???....

I admire and identify in some way with all of them. Each one has made tremendous artistic contributions. And, to some extent they fed off one another's works. One thing about John that appeals to my personality is that he always seemed to want to push the boundaries. He had a willingness, a need even, to do something different that might not be safe or widely accepted just for the experiment of it, if nothing else. That is really I think why he and Yoko were so connected as that was her style in the art world as well.

Paul liked to fuse classical elements into rock like string quartets and etc. The song Penny Lane was an early work with brilliant lyrics and incorporates the picolo trumpet.

As time went on it became pretty obvious that John and Paul were going in opposite directions musically. That, and adding Harrison going in yet another way, was part of what made their product so rich and interesting. Anything that either John or Paul wrote was always as "Lennon/McCartney" but you could tell the writer by who sang it. Harrison's work was under his own by line. Paul and John actually both independently wrote a song about the same event and they decided to stick the two together and make the song "A Day in the Life" You can see the difference in approach. Pretty interesting.

A day in the life is, in my opinion, the single greatest rock/pop song ever recorded

Bob Dylan was a good friend and I guess you could say he was formative to John. He told John that it was "all about the words, man". This song was a sort of turning point as an artist for John in that way.

If you've never been to Graceland, it's worth a visit. Been there a couple of times. Once it was for a big anniversary of his death so there were Elvis impersonators everywhere. The house itself is actually rather modest by today's standards. It was the biggest in the day though...purchased from a doctor. The decoration is off the chain gaudy, especially downstairs where he had three TVs so he could watch ALL the channels simultaneously.

It's hard (impossible?) to identify an individual who was so impactful to so many per capita. Music wasn't nearly so fractured then so I'm not sure we will ever see artists so universally known as when these guys were stars.

I'm not as big of an Elvis buff, though I am a fan. Perhaps @DaveFan'51 or others would like to kick in with a favorite? His voice was one of a kind and his style set the world on fire.
