Nickell Robey-Coleman made a name for himself when he got away with perhaps the most blatant pass interference that wasn’t called in history in the NFC Championship.
And now the Rams cornerback is going after Tom Brady and the Patriots as Los Angeles prepares to play in Sunday’s Super Bowl LIII.
Robey-Coleman,
in an interview with Bleacher Report, blasted Bill Belichick’s “arrogance” and saved some of his strongest words for Brady.
The 27-year-old believes the Rams defense can get to Brady “all over the place.”
“We have to stay connected,” Robey-Coleman said. “And he will slowly start to reveal himself.”
Reveal himself not as arguably the greatest quarterback of all time, but as an aging player who can be beaten.
“Age has definitely taken a toll,” Robey-Coleman said. “For him to still be doing it, that’s a great compliment for him. But I think that he’s definitely not the same quarterback he was.’’
Robey-Coleman pointed to Brady’s “movement, speed, velocity, arm strength. He still can sling it, but he’s not slinging it as much. Whatever he was doing — because of his age and all that — he’s not doing as much of that anymore. He’s still doing the same things; he’s just not doing as much of it. And sometimes, it’s not the sharpest. But it still gets done.”
Strong words from a player who — until now — is most known for saving the Rams from almost certain defeat in New Orleans, when he made a desperate play to break up a Drew Brees pass that might have set up the winning score from the Saints, sending them to Atlanta instead of the Rams.
Beaten on a third-and-10 pass play with 1:48 left in the fourth quarter, Robey-Coleman tackled Brees’ intended target, Tommylee Lewis.
But the officials incredibly didn’t call pass interference, which would have given New Orleans a first down and the chance to drain most of the clock. The Saints were forced to kick a field goal, which allowed the Rams to come down and kick a field goal of their own to set up OT, where Los Angeles won it with another field goal.
The NFL fined Robey-Coleman $26,739 for targeting on the play.
Not surprisingly, Robey-Coleman is confident the Rams will knock off New England. And his plan to beat the Patriots, in addition to getting after Brady, is pretty graphic.
“Stick a dagger in them,” Robey-Coleman said. “They’re not a team that you want to play around with. Stick the dagger in them and don’t leave it in them! Take it out! And let them leak. Let them leak slow. Put the dagger in them, pull it out, and let them leak slow. Just kill ’em slowly. That’s how you do them.”
