K.C. had two more plays (2nd and 3rd down) before it had to try a FG for the tie to continue the game.
The clock (with three seconds to play) meant nothing.

Yeah, I don’t like that.

The extra period, managing the time and player energy should all factor.

If you don’t score in the first OT after the other team scores, the game should be over… the drive shouldn’t continue.

I’m thrilled the Chiefs got it in the first OT period because the howling from 9er fans as well as casual fans who didn’t know or agree with the new rule woulda been insane

That's not the way they explained it in the broadcast. The chiefs could keep going as long as they possessed the ball. The ref said at the coin toss that they are beginning a new game. They each get one possession then it turns into next score wins.

I was confused. I am sure the NFL Network folks were as well. They (Jones-Drew) Asked Reid and also Mahomes the same question regarding why they didn't call a timeout at the end and if they were aware that there was only 3 seconds left. Both Mahomes and Reid responded saying they were very aware of the new rules since they cover it all the time. So they had no reason to call a timeout. Before I read this thread I had no idea what they were talking about, but it makes sense now.

It was essentially a new game, including a half time if it went that long. Sudden death with the component of both offenses getting at least 1 possession. Sure seems like the fairest way to decide a season. For all intents and purpose, the importance of the coin flip was as minimal as possible

Maurice Joes-Drew is just NOT any good in my opinion.

I realize he's a Rams' guy but Jones-Drew is the perfect example (to me) of an ex-player that does not see the need to put-in the work. I didn't see the exchange you referenced above because when Joes-Drew is talking, I change the channel. Just brings no value or insight; and that's just not entertaining for me.

IMO, Kyle Shanahan did not understand the rules, he spoke about wanting to get the ball back for a 3rd possession, that is why he took the ball first, but if the Chiefs had kicked a FG, he would have gotten the ball back and the next team that scored would have won.

I really think Kyle was misinformed because in OT in that scenario, you should always defer. He will get crushed for that and I hope it keeps him and all the 49ers fans up at night.

In addition to this, even Dopey Tony Romo ... who doesn't pay attention much of the time in my opinion ... explained right before the game-winning-TD that the clock basically did not matter.

Guessing there were some pretty good Super Bowl parties; and, by then, no one was paying attention.

Jones-Drew is a former NFL player, current NFL Network on-air personality, with years of experience who is covering the Super Bowl ... AND ... He DID NOT KNOW THE RULES.

Actually as bad a Homo is they finally said it’s a new game & each team gets the ball at least once so the time does not matter.

He first said though he needs to takes a Timeout here,making it feel like the clock mattered.

The Urgency had nothing to do with the clock. It was about the play that could have ended the season.

There was another timeout with 2:48 on-the-clock. That was called by the Niners.
