Mason confident there'll be no drop-off while Gurley rehabs
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...itzRss&utm_campaign=usatodaycomnfl-topstories

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Draft day could not have been a pleasant experience for St. Louis Rams running back Tre Mason. Imagine how jarring it must have been to see his team take Todd Gurley with the 10th overall pick.

Sooner or later he'll lose his starting job. While Gurley rehabs from left knee surgery, there's incentive and opportunity.

"Our approach with Todd is a common-sense approach," coach Jeff Fisher said Saturday. "We're going to take care of Todd and get him ready to play."

Mason could be the starter for the first few weeks of the season, and it shouldn't be a step down given his performance as a rookie. Rather than brood about the pick, he concedes nothing.

"It didn't faze me much," Mason said. "I've got goals of my own. Same as I always feel, control what you can control and just do what you can do."

The third-round pick and former Heisman Trophy finalist out of Auburn was inactive the first four games behind Zac Stacy. He seized the job for good in Week 5 and Stacy was a forgotten man, eventually traded during the draft.

Mason led the team with 765 yards rushing to go with a 4.3-yard average and four touchdowns, including 100-yard games against Denver and Oakland. He was versatile, too, catching a 12-yard pass on his first pro snap.

"Tre was somewhat of a slow starter last year and he got going," Fisher said. "Playing without the ball is really important and once we got comfortable with where he was, we cut loose."

Mason broke an 89-yarder against the Raiders and in five other starts had at least one 20-yarder.

"Give me the ball, I'm ready to rock," Mason said. "That's how I feel about the situation."

The most important lesson Mason said he learned his rookie year was that he belonged. At first he was impressed by the speed.

"When I first got here I felt like 'It's the NFL, my God, everybody's that much better,'" Mason said. "But it's really a mindset, how you're going to attack a game and how you feel like you want to take over a game."

He's more comfortable in pass protection, too. Though the Rams have a new offensive coordinator, Frank Cignetti, the basic concepts have not changed.

"I actually know exactly who I need to pick up, where I need to be, the route I need to do," Mason said. "Being prepared helps me be more calm, comfortable and stay poised in all situations."

The Rams (6-10) also have valuable Benny Cunningham back. Undrafted out of Middle Tennessee, Cunningham led the NFC with a 27.5-yard average on kickoff returns and also had 598 yards rushing and receiving, so he's established a nice niche.

"I'm excited, ready for Todd to get healthy," Cunningham said. "I feel like he can most definitely help this team.

"Watching some of his games in college, I can tell he'll make a good impact."

So there's no reason to rush Gurley into action, and the player understands.

"You know you just feel like you can go or you just feel like you can do much more than the trainers or the coaches are giving you," Gurley said. "But they're just trying to protect you and they've been through this, they have years of experience."

Gurley is getting individual work early in camp and that's fine with the team for now, about nine months after surgery on his left knee.

"We're not going to take any chances or any risks or subject him to any danger," Fisher said. "But you can read the tea leaves."

Notes: WR Brian Quick will be limited early in camp rehabbing from a shoulder injury that sidelined him the last nine games. ... Among those attending practice was a fan wearing a No. 8 Sam Bradford jersey with Nick Foles name taped over Bradford's name on the back.

I know it's w/out pads, but the Washington, Williams, Barnes, & Jones reports are concerning...esp. Barnes & Jones...
The C position was by far my biggest concern of the O-line this off-season. The fact that they did nothing for it concerned my a great deal. The reports I'm hearing now are starting to piss me off.

Someone had better start to pick it up before the season starts. There's no excuse for the FO to not have a better option at C this season.

My first ever camp report on day 2:

I will apologize right off and say I don't have a lot of great pics. Sorry. I took a few of the hill drill but mostly just watched.

It was a lot of fun and I got to meet @RamzFanz and @CoachO!

Today was actually my first time and I’m so glad I went. I'm definitely going to the scrimmage at Lindenwood and I will try to document that better (no guarantees). There is a lot to watch and I'm not going to do a huge report. I imagine Fanz and Coach will be reporting in with a much more extensive analysis. I will just leave you with a few random observations from an extreme amateur:

· They were wearing pads.

· Cook was getting a lot of attention and seems to have good chemistry already with Foles. He's a big body.

· Quick was playing but with a yellow thing on his helmet. He looks like he’ll be ready to me.

· We have a very beefy looking group along both sides of the lines.

· Havenstein is big. He doesn't look fat at all though but long and thick. He looks like an NFL Tackle from where I sit.

· Austin is small.

· Manion looks like he could already be the QB2.

· Rookie free agent WR's Marquez and Rodriguez looked good. Rodriquez, the navy seal, is the same height as Austin but seems bigger...that extra five-ten pounds makes a lot of diff.

· Safety Christian Bryant (a coacho favorite) looked good and got scored a pick.

· Aaron Donald is a bad ass. Saw him pretty easily get what would have been a sack in drills.

· Coach Williams yells a lot.
Looks good to me coder....keep at it for us on the west coast....

Saffold was heard saying a four letter expletive at the top of the hill at one point on that drill. It was intense and fun to watch.... One guy trys to slow two guys from pushing him up the hill.

This time of year is so fun. ove the reports (thanks)...Everything seems possible. I have been looking forward to seeing what the Oline can be. I like what I have heard about Jamon Brown and Rob Havenstein....I don't like what I have heard so far about the Cednter position. Tired of waiting for Barrett Jones, just to hear him getting blown off the ball. Yes I know, the defense is ahead of the Offense at this point, but I wanted to hear at least that the former Alabama Oline standout, could at least hold his own..*smh....Look forward to hearing more..

What a great day!

First, my daughter came with me and loved it! She's ready for tomorrow. She INSISTED we stay long after the crowds were gone to get Gurley's autograph on a full sized signature ball, and I'll be damned, she got it! He only signed for about 2 minutes and hers was the very last signature he gave.

I finally found coach! I tell you what, he may seem gruff on here at times but what a friendly guy. I got an entire Coach O report right here in my head! You can't have it!

Don't freak out people, he is inclined to share after the weekend in some manner, no need to panic, just be patient. From my discussions with him today, I can assure you, it'll be worth the wait. LOTS of insights I would have missed.

I got to meet Codemonkey! He texts me, I'm the guy in the goofy orange shirt, or that's how I read it. I'm looking and looking, no Codemonkey and what constitutes a goofy orange shirt anyways? So I figure he'll be around eventually. Later I notice a guy sitting directly in front of me, at my feet, with an orange shirt with Goofy on it! He asked the guy next to him if he was RamzFanz and he said yes! The guy must have heard "are you a Rams fan"!

What? Football? Oh yeah, that too:

I won't be doing a report other than a few observations but I will be posting much better pics and gifs as soon as I can get them together. Coach O made some points about Foles holding the ball too long, and he was. He also threw balls into coverage he better not throw in real games. However, it's TC and he was accurate with his passes.

There was a LOT more passing today than yesterday. I have numerous GIFs of the o-line for you soon.

Britt and Quick look the part of a real dynamic duo. Seriously. Bailey was Mr. hands and TA was Mr. slippery. Cook may just be Foles' favorite target and they have clicked all TC. As Coach O pointed out, with Quick not in the 11 on 11, they used TA outside and, despite him making a few nice catches, it's not a good idea at all. He's not getting separation and he's just too small.

The o-line worked very hard all day. Drills on the hills 20 feet from us. One on ones. LOT'S of coaching and teaching going on. I will leave the results for Coach O when they settle in.

The D line is the D line. In their face all day. Quinn was bending like stretch armstrong.

Anyways, great day. Lots of pics and gifs to come tonight sometime.

Oh, and my new favorite subject, Daniel Rodriguez. I'm serious. Dude is Tavon's height but built! He fielded punts with TA and caught every one that came his way. Can't wait to see if he can return punts. He stayed after and Garcia was passing to the rookies! Dude can still throw. Rodriguez hasn't dropped a pass in camp yet out of dozens. I think this guy might be a special teams/WR sleeper.

Excellent.
If the guy starting tomorrow, is always better than the guy starting today and this trend continues for the next few weeks,we could have a pretty good center by week 1.
Not really new news, but I wanted a guy with a first person perspective that got to see both at back to back days. He (jimiramsboy) or Jim Fadler, was probably the main tweeter, and I thanked him for his efforts.

Starting to think Tavon as a return specialist only - we need that 3rd down Amendola type guy and it's sounding (of course awful early) that Rodriguez can be that guy....

Honestly I don't care where anyone was drafted as long as they get that first down!!!!
