Primary goal is the Super Bowl for every team in the NFL. The fact that Stafford is thirty-nine (and might retire after this year) and Garoppolo is highly coveted - in addition to us having another first-round draft pick, and possibly a high one - could also swing the scales toward planning for the future as well as the present. Like I said, Rattler's not exactly chopped liver, and McVay has gone into the season with worse backups, and you make the Saints better able to win against the Falcons.

To make a dynasty happen, you have to plan for future endeavors as well.
I get the thought process but it weakens the Rams chances at a Super Bowl this year. That’s the priority.

It’s no secret that you love the draft and trading for picks. I think your lust for the draft may be clouding your view of what’s most important.

If Stafford gets injured, they still have a shot with Garapolo. The odds are so much worse with Rattler. If they get bounced from the playoffs right away are they going to be happy because they have another second round pick? No. Especially if Jimmy G leads the Saints to the playoffs.

And, if Rattler is any good the Saints would be foolish to trade him for a short term fix.

IMO trading a cheap, quality backup with playoff experience (Garapolo) for a relative unknown backup and a second round pick could potentially tank any hope for a playoff run if the 39 year old starter gets injured.

The primary goal is the Super Bowl, not draft picks.
Thank you

For the Aints it makes no sense either. The team is under no pressure to win with its 1st year Head coach, and are in process of escaping cap hell. Paying JG doesnt make sense. If they want a vet QB in the room, Carson Wentz is still out there and can probably be signed for 1/3 of what Garoppolo costs.

Why do I love the draft? Because it's the key for any and every dynasty. My "lust" is for a Rams dynasty, a time of constantly doing well and winning Super Bowls after years of struggle - and a solid foundation (draft picks and young players, in other words) is key to it.

The best teams learn from the past, work with present goals, and think towards the future. The Chiefs took Mahomes when Alex Smith was still starting and ended up dealing Smith for a high second. The Eagles are masters in maneuvering in not only the current draft but future ones as well (trading Carson Wentz for a first to Indy, drafting Hurts, trading two firsts with the Saints that ended up with Jalen Carter being taken).

Both of those teams have won multiple Super Bowls and have been in more. I want to win more than just in 2021, and that Atlanta pick is the key in the door. Weakening a foe while strengthening your position, the strategy and tactics behind it...isn't that what football's about?

Which he's not.
He's perfect for the Rams, which is why he re-signed there instead of one of the many open jobs this off season
A future draft pick does nothing for the Rams if Stafford goes down

I dunno, Grappolo subbed nicely for Stafford when he went out last season. During a possible SB run this season, having bona fide QB insurance is very necessary. If we were already looking for a future QB, maybe but not this season.
I am sure McVay appreciates Garoppolo and how he played for him. But McVay has very high standards at QB. So don't think for a minute that he views Jimmy as the answer for the future.

The only consideration for Jimmy would be bridge QB role if for whatever reason Stafford is not in the picture.

No offense intended. I like the draft too. It’s lots of fun. But winning in the NFL is hard. When a team is good enough to be a challenger for a Super Bowl, they don’t do anything to weaken that opportunity. It could be another20+ years until the Rams are in this position again.

If the past is any indication then it’s more likely the Rams will want to add to their roster like they did with Von Miller and Odell Beckham, by trading future picks.

This is where we all agree, the Rams using their draft equity next year is where they may be able to pull off a Mahomes/Hurts/Lamar move. They were thinking ahead when they fleeced Atlanta in the draft

Can we all just agree that Matthew Stafford is 37?

Sure. I made a mistake, saying he was thirty-nine. He was still tempted to leave everything this year with no assurances for next year. We'll see how everything goes.
You really think he was temped? I just don't think the teams that courted him had a chance. He was just trying to increase his pay. Reminding the Rams he could go anywhere.

And he plays when he’s 40. Needs to be all in horns!
