Fascinating listen came from my local sports talk radio again this morning regarding the Jax feelings on this.

The news guys up there are literally referring to the team now as complete dysfunction.

The jags made Marone come out and face the press for questions. Obviously the 1st thing the press asks is for information on way they decided to make the trade. Doug tells them - I wish we had somebody out here who could answer those questions for you. You guys know how much I respect the jobs you have to do. But I found out about this trade at the same time you guys did.

LOL

All Coughlin was willing to do was put out a statement that the news guys are saying he didn't even write that basically said nothing at all.

So after going over all this... they go ahead and play Ramsey talking about how he's overjoyed to be in LA. Ramsey talks about himself being a young guy who loves the idea of being on a team now that has a younger mindset.

That's when the radio guys started talking about Les only being 48 and McSlay being in his 30's.... and just how far out of touch Coughlin and the rest of his geriatric staff is. Ramsey was basically telling everyone that the old bags running the show there in Jax are the reason he needed to get the hell out of there.

The jag fans meanwhile are livid because nobody from the team is even willing to just say something as lame as... "This will be better for our future". Instead, they get a written statement saying nothing from Coughlin... and their HC saying that he has no idea why this decision was made and that he found out about the trade at the same time the press did.

Trade your best player and say NOTHING! Hahahahahahaaaaa. Fuck the fans... they mean NOTHING.

What a great time to be a jag.

This is a very negative Nancy look at the trade, where it goes from an A+ to a lot less.

A bit critical of Goff, too, but mainly an interesting take on our offensive woes, especially O line and suggesting that Ramsey's acquisition isn't going to help our biggest issues.

Read at your own risk!

There is no logical way to defend the Rams trading for Jalen Ramsey

I like the trade. No logic needed.

I get it though — you love the Khalil Mack trade. And you won’t like this trade unless everything falls perfectly into your world vision. You think Jalen Ramsey is a diva and behaves like Antonio Brown. You have faith in Jaguar fans’ opinion over what actually comes out of Jalen Ramsey’s own mouth. You want Snead to handle contracts even though that’s not his job.

Did I miss anything?

Anyway

GO RAMS!!!
GO RAMSEY!!

Yep. What's funny is that the same thing could be said about the Mack trade. It didn't fix their OL or QB problems...

Rarely is there a singular move that fixes all the problems.

Ramsey fixes A problem. I know they're working on fixing the others.

It's a win now move for a team not built to win now. I can't believe the Rams gave up 2 firsts for this guy. It used to be if you had a malcontent on your team, and you had to trade him you never got anything good back. Jags made out amazingly well. There's very few NFL teams that would give up 2 1sts for a franchise QB, let alone a CB.

He's a clear upgrade over Peters, so he does make the team better. But going forward, Rams must be counting on the NFL cap increasingly significantly in order to pay Goff, Donald, Gurley, and Ramsey AND be able to build a team to fill the rest of the 50 or so guys. I doubt many good teams are constructed as such. Reminds me of what the Redskins used to do under Snyder.

Here's the genius of this.

The Cap is redone under the CBA after 2020 and there are some estimates that if they get this right via monetizing digital streams that the cap for 2021 could increase by as much as $50M per team as the NFLPA argues for more revenue share and a complete reworking of the rookie salary structure (they went WAY too far).

So the Rams are stocking up on elite talent and if that happens, they'll be able to retain them while other teams overpay to pick up or retain talent.

It's a gamble that could turn out to be a genius move. We'll see.

Please take this into account.

in 2017, the Jags had a DYNASTIC defense. Of the top 6 defensive players from that team...NONE are there now. NONE.

Moreover, Ramsey is definitely a millennial player who's not within light years of the old school disciplinarian that Tom Coughlin is.

Ramsey's issues were with the FO and them making clear that he wasn't part of their long term plans. He had asked to be paid and if not, traded.

They dicked around and apparently, the FO got a bit unprofessional (or maybe just too candid as Coughlin is wont to to do).

Ramsey initially wanted to stay and get paid. He squashed any issues with the HC. But it was the FO that basically took the fight to him. Again, this all fits Tom Coughlin's MO to a tee.

Young, passionate players can often struggle to operate with grace or temperance in stressful business situations that are also inherently personal. It's a lot to ask of anyone, let alone a 24 yo kid with no experience beyond his 3 years in the NFL.

All this was said about Peters...and more.

Peters leaves this building basically rehabbed. When he got here, fans at least and more than a few GMs had written him off as a head case, cancer, trouble maker, etc. Leaving the Rams, his teammates and the FO are going out of their way even after he's gone to praise his professionalism, what a good teammate he's been and praising his actions on and off the field. He wasn't so much as pulled over for a speeding ticket afaik.

Suh was no trouble. Talib has been the epitome of a veteran leader.

The Rams were supposed to implode with all of these strong personalities. It's not the case.

McVay's strongest suit isn't his offensive acumen. It's his ability to relate to his players in a way that reinforces that his expectations are compliments and this coaching staff and franchise are intent on making players the best they can be to benefit both the Rams and the player. And other than Quinn in a move that couldn't be helped, we try to send guys to teams that are contending and in Peters' case, we specifically refused to trade him to a team that would insist he take a pay cut.

So we waited on a trade for no reason beyond making sure Peters got paid.

Now, most fans won't notice that, but you can BET that ever representative for NFL players is seeing how we do and it's huge.

I not only expect Ramsey to do extraordinarily well here, I expect Ramsey and Donald to be an even better HoF tandem than Ed Reed and Ray Lewis (and get along better as well).

Ramsey won't just do well here, he'll thrive here.

And he'll tackle like a safety as a CB...so yeah.
Nice post Mack. I hope your take is accurate with how/why things went down.

At this point for myself all I want to see is him locked up.

every team in the nfl would give up more than 2 1sts for a franchise qb but we'll never know because they're never available.

One thing that is overlooked by the talking heads is, counterintuitive as it sounds, this defensive move DOES IN FACT HELP THE OFFENSE TOO!

The Rams are getting nickeled and dimed to death on D and this bend don’t break approach that sometimes gives 3s vs 7s also eats up TONS OF TIME.

The Rams have been unable to get in sync offensively. You can’t listen to a McVay presser without him telling us this 10 times. This is a move to address rhythm.

If you get the other team off the field, as opposed to the 7 yard completions on 3rd and 6 that we’ve lived with in soft zone world, you can get into a groove offensively. Even if you mix in a quick mistake 60 yard TD now and then, you come out WAY ahead.

We still need better play from OL, yes, but I saw this same OL allow us to move up and down the field against the Seahawks on the road and a shanked kick away from a win. Can’t wait to see what they do when they get in a consistent groove.

I’m pumped by this move.

Jaguar fans reaction. Most are glad to see him go. Most also think their GM will screw up the picks.

Yeah, that ain't accurate. The rest of my family are Jags fans. They're pissed. I post on another forum with a lot of Jags fans. Results there are mixed. Some knew this was inevitable and are happy with the comp. Some are pissed at the FO.

Jalen Ramsey fully participates in Thursday’s practice

Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey‘s back is still bothering him. Unless it isn’t.

The Rams have conflicting injury reports regarding Thursday’s practice. In the emailed version, Ramsey fully participated despite a back injury. On the team’s official website, no back injury is disclosed.

Regardless, Ramsey seems to be on track to play after three weeks of not playing with the Jaguars, due to his back injury".“I think — to my knowledge — he’s feeling good,” coach Sean McVay told reporters on Thursday regarding Ramsey. “I know he had the issue with the back soreness and stuff like that, and that’s something that we want to monitor and keep an eye on.”

Still, the Rams surely deemed Ramsey to be sufficiently healthy to pass a physical before the trade was finalized, and with only 26 games left on his rookie deal the Rams surely don’t want him to miss any games, especially with Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley on tap this weekend when the Rams travel to Atlanta to play the Falcon.

Common sense suggests that the Rams won’t want to expose Ramsey as a malingerer for his failure to play in any of the three games preceding his trade. So they can talk about his “back soreness and stuff like that” now, and then they can put him on the field come Sunday, as the Rams try to reverse a three-game losing streak.

I am wondering if the Rams have insider knowledge that the CAP is going to go up dramatically with the new CBA contract (or maybe they are hoping it will go up).
Bingo. It’s a good bet the CAP will increase dramatically in the near future. Lock in now though because elite players will be taking advantage of that once it’s common knowledge.

In all fairness, Peters had a ton of off field baggage coming to the Rams.

No he didnt. This was a story fabricated by the media to push the "Rams locker room is going to explode with so many different personalities" agenda.

Josina is terrible. She goes on about how our depth is questionable, i.e. "God forbid if Hill or NRC goes down"... All teams have questionable depth if you remove their top corner and then imagine an injury to another starter.

Also had to laugh at her body language and how catty she is with the female host. Doesn't look at her when answering her question, looks at the dudes only, just funny man. I'll bet the other people that work with her want to choke her @$$ out lol.

I said earlier, maybe in another thread, that the NFL is looking to really monetize those digital streams and the next CBA is supposed to address that.

Probably should make new thread, but this is what I expect to see:

17 game season. Same number of pre-season games.

Extra round of playoffs.

These lead to more revenue and thus not just bigger cap, but bigger percentage.

No more THC testing

Players getting 48.5% of the revenues. It's currently 47%, they want 49%, I think they settle for slightly less. Thus as revenues expand, cap expands so it's much more than a 1.5% bump.

No player contribution to stadium costs.

Renegotiation of the DirecTV Sunday Ticket package to allow for digital alternatives with significant monetization, likely through their NFLNetwork online portal and/or through DirecTV. The NFL has a one way opt-out clause at the end of this season. It was reported that the NFL missed a deadline, but that's not correct. DirecTV will renegotiate and capture some of that digital revenue or the NFL will take its ball and billions elsewhere.

Significant ramping up of the salary cap. It's possible that 2020 will be 11-12M, but 2021 could be 20M+ and maybe substantially more.

Refining the replay options wrt PI calls/non-calls.

And the big one... a significant change to the rookie pay scale. I think the big sticking point is going to be eliminating either the 5th year option or restructuring the Franchise tag. No one enjoys the drama that comes with a rookie outplaying his rookie contract and knowing he can be contractually stuck for up to 7 years before going for that 2nd contract. We know the NFL drops under performers like a bad habit. This will help address the over performers.

I think part of the Rams thinking is that much of this looks very doable and the NFLPA has become open to negotiating and seems okay with the 17 game season as long as they get that bump. I think they'll take 48.5% up from 47% revenue share and no THC testing exchange for a 17 game season. If this gets done like it looks it will, the Rams will stockpile ELITE talent and then be able to pay them. It's a gamble with some downside, but the upside is fantastic.

Teams that are sitting back remaining cautious are making a mistake. If this all happens as it could (I want to say even likely), teams will be struggling in a market with tons of instant inflation.

The one thing that is NOT happening is that the cap isn't shrinking. That was only an option if they struck and that looks very unlikely now... unless the owners decide to die on the hill that is stadium cost sharing... and that's unlikely.

Rookies are either going to be more expensive or, more likely, not have those later options like 5th year or Franchise tag options in the same way. Plus, I think the cap over the next 2-3 years is going to go up SUBSTANTIALLY. So even if the Rams are tight in 2020, the cap escalation will allow for extensions and renegotiations to keep those guys in the building.

Point is that Ramsey's in the building now. AD, Goff, Kupp, Gurley, Cooks, Hekker...they're all in the building. The only tough outlier is Cory Littleton as he's going to get paid. We'll see if we can keep him. We should be able. But we're stockpiling ELITE talent now and will likely have the ability to keep all of them for a long time...

And that's very good news for the Rams.

Leonard Fournette seems unhappy about Jaguars’ Jalen Ramsey trade

The Jacksonville Jaguars gave in and traded Jalen Ramsey to the Los Angeles Rams this week, but one of Ramsey’s ex-teammates certainly seems to wish things had gone down differently.

Ramsey has been quite pleased with his move to Los Angeles. On Friday, he posted a picture of himself with another former Jaguar-turned-Ram, Dante Fowler. That was apparently unpleasant for Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette, who had a brief response on Instagram.

View: https://twitter.com/BleacherReport/status/1185345165784838144

Fournette went even further, retweeting the same image on Twitter with another unfiltered comment: “Ain’t this some s–t.”

Jealousy? Dissatisfaction with the Jaguars? Simply missing his former teammate? Maybe a little bit of everything? After all, Fournette and Tom Coughlin have had issues before. The Jaguars have publicly defended their move, as they should. However, it’s tough to sell trading one of the best cornerbacks in the game, even if he demanded it.

Rams made right call in Ramsey deal. As a former college scout, I know I'm not supposed to endorse the Los Angeles Rams' decision to trade two first-round selections (2020, 2021) and a fourth-rounder (2021) for Jalen Ramsey earlier this week, but I absolutely love the team's decision to opt for "players over picks" in this scenario.

Sure, the prospect of sitting out the opening round in the 2020 and 2021 drafts is a little scary, but, considering the Rams aren't likely to be drafting early in the round, I don't know if they could have landed a better player than Ramsey in either class. We are talking about a former No. 5 overall pick with world-class athleticism (ACC long-jump champion), an All-Pro game and the alpha-dog mentality that raises the standard of play of the entire defense when he steps on the field as the designated CB1.

Ramsey, a two-time Pro Bowl selectee, is one of just seven players with nine or more INTs and 45 or more passes defensed since he entered the NFL in 2016. He's allowed just 53.7 percent of targets to be completed in his career (fifth-lowest among 73 CBs with 150-plus targets since 2016, per Pro Football Focus). And he's done all this while challenging some of the top receivers in the game.

That's exactly what you want from a first-round pick when selecting at the top of the board. You want a transcendent talent who can make everyone around him better. That's what Ramsey has done throughout his time with the Jaguars, and I can't imagine him failing to perform on the Hollywood stage.

"Ramsey is better than anyone that [the Rams] could've drafted in the 2020 and 2021 drafts," an NFC college scouting director told me. "He's a proven commodity because we've seen him play at an elite level in the league. I don't know if he fixes their immediate problems, but he gives them another blue-chip player on the roster. ... You can never have enough of those on your team."

Now, as many folks have pointed out, Ramsey's contract is due to expire after next season, and allowing him to walk would make this trade a loser for the Rams. That's why I expect the franchise to do whatever it takes to lock him up long-term. So, yes, I'm OK with the Rams borrowing a page from the Los Angeles Lakers and building a "Showtime" squad with highly paid star power all over the field. The 16-time basketball world champions have routinely built their title squads by stockpiling the roster with players who began their careers elsewhere. From Wilt Chamberlain to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to Shaquille O'Neal to LeBron James, the Lakers have gone outside the organization to bring in A-list players. Although some of their key contributors have been homegrown products (see: Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant), the Lakers have been the premier team in the NBA due to their willingness to do whatever it takes to put the best five players on the floor.

That said, team-building is a different endeavor in the NFL, and the Rams' decision to go all in on acquiring blue-chip talents could leave them in a scenario where they don't make a single first-round pick for five years. They haven't used a first-round pick since 2016 (Jared Goff), and at the moment, they won't have another one in their possession until 2022, which puts more pressure on the scouting department to find hidden gems in later rounds. However, given their success rate in recent years with finding talent in the second round or later (Gerald Everett, Cooper Kupp, John Johnson, Tyler Higbee, Samson Ebukam, Taylor Rapp and David Long), I believe the Rams should be able to win games by filling out their roster with low-cost pieces to complement a high-priced set of core players (Goff, Aaron Donald, Brandin Cooks, Todd Gurley and eventually Ramsey).

Remember, the title contenders in the NFL typically have 10 to 12 blue-chip players on their roster. The Rams certainly have the firepower to contend, with the aforementioned quintet ranking among the best at their respective positions and players like Dante Fowler, Michael Brockers, Eric Weddle, Clay Matthews, Robert Woods and Kupp capable of playing like elite players in the team's system. Although Goff and the offensive line need to play better for the team to make a run at the Lombardi Trophy this season, the pieces are in place for the Rams to enjoy a long stay at the top of the NFC due to an approach that prioritizes proven players over picks in the player-acquisition game.
