Raiders To Invest Millions For New Training Facility At Alameda Headquarters

ALAMEDA (CBS SF) — Amid the talk of the Oakland Raiders possibly moving back to Southern California, there is word the team is planning to spend millions of dollars to build a brand-new training facility at their Alameda headquarters.

The city of Alameda has already approved the plans for the new facility, which will include a state-of-the-art workout center, a new maintenance building, and new turf and irrigation systems for the three practice fields.

“The exterior is a prefabricated metal building,” said Alameda Planning Services Manager Allen Tai.”Those buildings can last for quite some time.”

The new gym will measure about 20,000 square feet with a hydration bar.

Tai said the construction should be done by mid-August before the start of the regular season.

It’s estimated the entire facility will cost between $10 million and $40 million. “We’re excited,” said Tai. “If this is a sign that the Raiders are choosing to stay in town, we’re very excited.”

Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Authority board member Chris Dobbins agreed the facility plans are a good omen for keeping the team in the Bay Area.

“These guys are businessmen,” said Dobbins. “I can’t see why anybody would invest this kind of money for a short term.”

The Raiders have a one-year lease at O.co Coliseum, and could ask the NFL for permission to move to SoCal as early as next year.

Carson in Los Angeles County has been lobbying both the Raiders and the San Diego Chargers to build a joint stadium venture.

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said the plans to upgrade the team’s Alameda headquarters was “a great sign.”

“It’s a sign of confidence in Oakland,” said Schaaf. “It’s a sign that they want to stay here where they have an adoring fan base.”

Former executive with the A’s, Warriors and 49ers Andy Dolich agreed it’s a good sign, but said Oakland shouldn’t relax in its stadium negotiations with the Raiders.

“In the scheme of the multi-billions of dollars that get transacted every day in the NFL, I wouldn’t necessarily have a ‘Raiders Are Staying in Oakland’ party just yet,” said Dolich.

The Raiders did not respond to a KPIX 5 request for comment. It’s expected the players will be able to use the brand-new facility no later than September 1st.

that Raiders training facility is a bit curious. strange timing considering the leverage they are trying to maintain, unless they aren't.

If I were a Raiders fan from Oakland, I'd be pissed. They clearly want to stay, why not built the modest stadium they're asking for?

No shit - eh B4? You would think that would be a slam dunk for that area to get a 60% vote. As a native Californian, I can say.... Freakin' Californians! It just boggles my mind sometimes. With the population they have in that area and the amount of money that is in many areas of Alameda County, that would be chump change for them.

If the Rams stay in St. Louis playing in a brand new riverfront stadium, Stan's hardball tactics will have accomplished that and he'll be more than forgiven, he'll be revered.

If he moves to L.A. and 20 years later (if he's still alive and in control) leaves for a big payday, L.A. will hate him then. But until then, he'll be a hero for bringing the Rams back to L.A.

Now if he tries to move and the NFL stops him, he sues, the team languishes, well that would be a scenario where he wouldn't be getting a lot of love...

Says who?

If the Rams had shown this much to STL the construction would have already started.

Raiders: "We love it here. We need a new stadium, but we'll certainly help build it. Preferably, a modest reasonable stadium, no need to crimp the taxpayers. And we want to put more construction money into the practice facility."

Oakland: "That's outrageous."

Compared to....

STL: "We love you we want you to stay. I know we've been slow but we are ready to get this done and keep supporting you thru good times and bad."

Stan: "That's outrageous."

I am pretty sure the Raiders plan to upgrade the training facility was announced earlier in the year. If I remember correctly, and of course I can't find any article to support this, it was one of the things and Jack Del Rio pushed for during his interview process.

It will be very convenient for the Raiders to practice in Oakland and play in LA?

That is it in a nutshell. All the teams involved in this stadium game want to stay put with the Rams presumably being the exception. ESK really toppled the apple cart.

Your mock conversation paints a good picture.
Although I don't think the FANS of Oakland feel any different than those of you in StL.

Still, they seem willing to go as far as a team in their financial condition can to stay in Oakland. They already play in a dump. It's one thing to crap on the EJD, but that place sucks. I'll be honest, I'm a little jealous of that commitment. Sure they want to move if Oakland doesn't budge, but only then. I know that doesn't mean much to some who follow a team, but it does to me. Makes the ticket prices easier to handle, etc.
