After watching those 2 Qbs last night it's obvious we need Stafford but what we really need is a breakaway rb. And a stud qb, like Stafford but with wheels and youth. Sure we might get to the playoffs but how do we do really with an older qb who's not mobile or durable. Yes, he plays through injuries as I'm sure most do, and we couldn't score 20 + points those last games, ( broken ribs ) didn't help, but without lockdown o line or a breakaway Beast of an RB, we wont go far I'm afraid. I Hope we do, but we are only top 8 team which is pretty impressive in this leauge really but not a top 2 team. Go rams.

I keep hearing little things about Stafford retiring. Or that the team may not want him back. My gut feeling is he will play next year. I gotta hear something concrete from him and the team that he's not returning. He's already said he thinks he's got plenty left in the tank. And judging from the eye test, I'd agree with him. The team has to know they won't be a legit Superbowl contender without him.

Couple quick thoughts and comments ...

Those guys are few and far between.

... without lockdown o line or a breakaway Beast of an RB, we wont go far I'm afraid.
Again, there are not a lot of those guys either but I agree that more speed/big-play-abilty at the skill positions would help.

... we are only top 8 team which is pretty impressive in this leauge really but not a top 2 team. Go rams.
I would argue the Rams may be better than a top-8-team. The Rams had the Eagles.

Had the Eagles and only lost in OT with the fully healthy Lions (while we were not fully healthy). Not to mention, we beat the other AFC Champion contender. I'd suggest top 4

If I'm Stafford I am more irritated with the way the OL starts every fucking season, which is in complete disarray, than I am about a few more million guaranteed. Because the way I see it he has an opportunity in this offense to string wins and stats together to boost his Hall of Fame equation.

So as far as the money's concerned the Rams will probably take care of him. Because he's the best option for them by far. Stan will support Sean & Les, if they tell him they need 9 then it should get done.

But the concern is this goes back to last offseason. Why is it a concern now. That in itself worries the shit out of me.

Well the nice thing is Les can guarantee $50 M with a new contract and still take the same Cap hit within $1-2M this year. Guarantee next year and put a team option in for a third year.

Get errr done!

Sorry man but I am not understanding the math.

The Rams currently have a $49.7M cap hit for Stafford in 2025 but Stafford is not making $49.7M in 2025.

Eh,

It's not like we didn't just win a SB 4 seasons ago. Stafford has never been mobile, and we had arguably a worse RB situation when we won the SB. I think ways of winning in the NFL has shifted but I don't think it's the only way to win a SB. I agree I do want the Rams to find a QB eventually that can run and pass but be careful what you wish for. Not everyone is built like Mahomes or Allen.

True, but it's essentially a year to year deal and was structured that way. Something has got to give whether its a restructure or not. Why else would McVay want clarity then?
Stafford wanted guaranteed money, and they are expecting a similar conversation.
But he’s under contract for 2 more years, not year to year. the Rams dont have to sign him or change his deal.

He has only $15 mil guaranteed dollars left on his deal. There's no way he plays under that contract. Something has to give. The 2 years left mean doo doo other than maybe how they spread the cap hit if/when his contract is restructured. Do you seriously think Stafford would play if we don't change his deal? Just curious is why I'm asking. Not trying to assume anything.

Sorry man but I am not understanding the math.

The Rams currently have a $49.7M cap hit for Stafford in 2025 but Stafford is not making $49.7M in 2025.
He’s only getting like $27M cash this year, bonuses were prorated into future years from one 2021-22 to win the Superbowl. He’s already received the bonus of $22M but is only getting $27M cash for a cap hit of $49M.

Stafford thinking to himself he’s a very good QB, but why is he only making $27M this year?!? When chumps like Danny Dimes, Lawrence, and The Massagist are making way more guaranteed.

So Stafford is saying to the Rams, I’ll tear up the rest of the contract before the league year starts, but get me some guaranteed cash and let’s make a run.

Replace the contract with $45M guaranteed and escalators to bring it to $50M. Depending on how reasonable the escalators are to achieve the Rams can still get close to that $50M cap number by reworking the contract and paying Staff more cutter.

Please correct me if I’m naive about how NFL cap space works.

He has to play, he’s under contract. His salary will be guaranteed after week 1. Can he hold out? Sure. Will he? Doubt it. Clearly there was more drama behind the scenes last year than we knew and it sounds like the Rams don’t want to deal with that again.
For the Rams to do a simple restructure, they don’t need Stafford consent. So they can convert salary to bonus, pay him up front and stretch out the hit over the remainder of the deal.
If the Rams want to add void years, they need Stafford to agree.
That’s where I am guessing the problem lies.
With only 1 year left after 25, a simple restructure doesn’t help.
So Stafford needs to agree, and if he’s too demanding they can just play it out as it stands.
For 2 more seasons

He has to play? So McVay and even Snead talking about the contract issue needing to be resolved ASAP doesn't mean anything? I'm going to strongly disagree with you and say you are dead wrong on this one. With that said, appreciate the responses even if we don't agree :clinkingbeer:

He has a contract. Rams don’t have to do a thing.
He can hold out, retire, ask for trade. But he’s under contract with the Rams. Nothing to argue about
