Bill Belichick refused to allow Josh McDaniels to move up coaching interviews despite playoff loss

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick refused to allow longtime offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to move up his scheduled interviews with teams interested in him as a head coaching candidate to the start of this week, league sources said, at the same time he pushed special teams coordinator Joe Judge for the New York Giants' coaching vacancy and greenlit a Monday interview for him.

Belichick and owner Robert Kraft have long been worried about losing McDaniels, who has a very strong bond with Hall of Fame free agent quarterback Tom Brady and is one of the best play designers and play callers in football. Kraft and Belichick went to great lengths to persuade McDaniels not pull out of his agreement to become head coach of the Colts in 2017, as is well documented, and Belichick has a reputation for being difficult to work with when it comes to other teams looking to hire an assistant he does not want to lose.

Despite New England being eliminated from the playoffs in the Wild Card round Saturday night, multiple sources from teams that had requested interviews with McDaniels said Belichick would not relent to move up their window to speak with McDaniels in the immediate days following that defeat. Brady's future is very much in limbo, with the 43-year old quarterback contemplating playing elsewhere in 2020, sources said, which would make retaining McDaniels even more paramount as there is no set replacement on staff and Brady has been in one offense his entire career.

At the same time, Belichick was advocating for Judge for the Giants job, knowing that they couldn't hire both him and McDaniels. The Browns, Giants, and Panthers all requested interviews with McDaniels at the conclusion of the regular season. Belichick would not allow McDaniels to meet the Panthers on Monday, the same day Judge was interviewing with the Giants; Baylor coach Matt Rhule met with the Panthers on Tuesday and was hired by Wednesday.

McDaniels did eventually interview with the Browns on Friday; he was set to meet with the Panthers in New England on Tuesday and with the Giants in New York on Wednesday, prior to both teams filling their vacancies, sources said

The Panthers were extremely high on McDaniels, sources said, and had his interview been before Rhule's it is quite possible owner David Tepper would have acted to quickly hire him as well. That was not the case – McDaniels and Rhule are both represented by Athlete's First – and Rhule was hired by Tuesday with the Giants not wanting to risk losing Judge to Mississippi State or McDaniels to go elsewhere, they hired Judge within hours of the Panthers landing Rhule, whom New York sought to interview on Tuesday.

If McDaniels couldn't make it work in Denver what thinks he's going to make it work in Cleveland with all the diva personalities? McDaniels is a micromanager like Belicheat and has the same ethics. It's why he was not particularly trusted in Denver's locker room. If he's hired I would expect a talent exodus during his tenure. So in reality he's exactly the type of coach they would hire....just as dysfunctional as the ownership and FO.

Guess they don't want to heed the warnings of past mistakes.

Belichick lol. Dude is such a dick.

I do think McDaniels is a talented offensive mind, for the record. But yeah it's hard to imagine him succeeding in Cleveland under such an asswipe owner. Winning starts at the top and the Browns just fired a GM who would have been able to help said asswipe do things right.

Makes me question McDaniels' intelligence too btw. That roster is indeed loaded with talent, but it's sort of a snake pit where you need a coach that can nail the leadership side. Has he grown up enough to do that?

I suspect first thing he'll do is try to trade Beckham. Which would not be a dumb thing but given the way he tanked in Denver...

I love a good chocolate frosted Bavarian cream donut but nothing compares to a glazed, lemon jelly filled donut. AND IT'S NOT EVEN CLOSE

You're clearly going to the wrong shop. It HAS to be glazed or it's just done wrong. Obviously, if they can't figure that out, they probably make shitty lemon jelly filling.

The only doughnut worth eating is a Krispy Kreme.

The rest are cake!

Krispy Kreme? You gotta up your standards, man. I'm sure there's a good donut shop in your area aside from them. I get mine from Old Town in Florissant, Missouri. They're open 24/7, and they bake new ones all the time. Best donuts in Missouri, as far as I'm concerned.

Lol. Bake? You could bake a “donut” I guess. But that’s cake to me.

Now a “doughnut” that’s a whole different taste!

Kevin Stefanski hired as the Cleveland Browns 18th full-time head coach

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Paul DePodesta had to wait a year, but he got his man in Kevin Stefanski, the Vikings offensive coordinator.

The Browns on Sunday hired Stefanski, 37, as their 18th full-time head coach and their 10th in the new era. He’s the fifth one hired by the Browns since the Haslams took over in 2012.

But they’re hoping this one sticks. DePodesta, the Browns’ Chiefs Strategy Officer who ran the search this year, favored Stefanski last year, but was overruled by former GM John Dorsey, who opted for Freddie Kitchens at the last minute.

With the DePodesta driving the bus, he didn’t let Stefanski, get away this time. Even though Stefanski’s offense flopped in his head-to-head matchup with 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, another Browns’ finalist, in the NFC Divisional Round loss on Saturday, it didn’t deter the Browns.

The Browns will also try to bring former Vice President of Player Personnel Andrew Berry back into the fold to achieve that elusive organizational alignment Jimmy Haslam is seeking.

The Browns have requested permission from the Eagles to interview Berry, their current VP of Football Operations, as Browns GM. Berry would pair well with Stefanski, whom he got to know during the Browns’ head coach search last year.

Berry and DePodesta favored Stefanski, but Dorsey opted for Kitchens, and it cost both of them their jobs after the 6-10 season. The analytics-heavy trio would give the Browns an All-Ivy lineup, with two Harvard grads in DePodesta and Berry, and a Penn alum in Stefanski.

Berry, 32, is a GM candidate for at least one other NFL job, but loved his time in Cleveland under DePodesta, and is a long-time favorite of Haslam. The Browns have also requested permission to interview Colts assistant GM Ed Dodds, who would also pair well with Stefanski.

Stefanski “blew away’’ everyone on the search committee last season and only bolstered his resume this year running the offense full-time with the help of Super Bowl winning coach Gary Kubiak, who was hired as Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Advisor to mentor Stefanski.

In his 14th season as a Vikings assistant — their longest-tenured coach — and first as their full-time offensive coordinator, Stefanski helped guide Minnesota to a 10-6 record and an upset of the Saints in the Wildcard round.

The Vikings finished 16th overall on offense this season, but sixth in rushing and eighth in points scored. Kirk Cousins finished fourth in the NFL with a 107.4 rating and fourth with a 69.1 completion percentage.

Stefanski also earned high praise from Kubiak, who could be a candidate to run the Browns’ offense if Stefanski get the job.

“Kevin’s got a brilliant future,” Kubiak told Vikings reporters in November. “The key to getting in position to [be a head coach] is calling games, calling defenses, calling offenses, making decisions, handling a meeting room of a bunch of players, being able to get the most out of not only players, but coaches as well. Kevin’s been exceptional and this is a great opportunity for him this year to do it on a full-time basis. He’s doing a great job with it.”

They're fried just like any real glazed donut should be. And that is exactly how the lemon jelly filled donut has to be done. Fried, then glazed and piped with that wonderful jelly. I think I need to head down to Jelly Donuts and get me one or three.
